Lancelot: The Adventures of King Arthur's Most Celebrated Knight by Christine Chaundler, Vintage 1995, Children's Classics Edition, Hardcover Book, Illustrated by Eleanor Brickdale and Thomas Mackenzie
"Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626) was a towering figure in the formative years of the Church of England. Averse to the puritanical spirit of the age, he helped to create a distinctive Anglican theology, moderate in outlook and catholic in tone. He believed that theology should be built on sound learning, he held a high doctrine of the Eucharist and he emphasised dignity and order in worship. His influence defines Anglicanism to this day.A devout scholar and gifted linguist, he served as Dean of Westminster and under James I became Bishop of Chichester, then Ely and finally Winchester. In 1604 he was appointed as one of the translators of the Authorized Version and became responsible for most of the Old Testament. Sword of Lancelot has less of a reputation than those more recent depictions, but its widescreen debut might still make it a minor Holy Grail find for cineastes pilgrimaging to shelves of classic cinema spectacles of yore. When I attended the British Birdwatching Fair in August 2000 at Rutland Water in the UK on behalf of BirdLife International's then "Save the Albatross Campaign" I was first in-line to have my copy of Lance Tickell's just-published book on albatrosses signed by him. I still consult his book when researching news stories for ACAP Latest News on this web site, and I especially enjoy the final chapter entitled "The Mariner Syndrome" that eruditely reviews poetry about albatrosses since Coleridge's classic "Rime". Sadly, this was to be our last meeting.
