Parents & Community Members:

Thursday Feb 16th at 8AM at the state capitol, Texas Education Agency is holding a confirmation hearing on the appointment of Mike Morath as TEA Commissioner.

Public comment is welcome at the start of the hearing. If you cannot appear in person to comment, click on this link (http://www.senate.texas.gov/cmte.php?c=572) and then individual committee member names to send them a direct email with your comments.

THIS IS IMPORTANT!

Reasons why Mike Morath is not good for Public Education:

10. He is ultra conservative and was appointed by Gov. Abbott, who has consistently failed to support Public Education.

9. Abbott and Morath are proponents of school choice a.k.a. vouchers and using tax payer dollars to pay for private and charter schools, diverting funds from our already-underfunded public schools.

8. Morath pushed for the A-F accountability of school districts, which does nothing to hold state leaders accountable even though they oversee funding for public school districts.

7. Morath is explicitly pro-charter schools, meaning he wants to expand giving taxpayer dollars to schools that have no accountability to taxpayers, a concept contrary to our state constitution.

6. Morath's experience in education includes 1 year as a substitute teacher and briefly serving as a Dallas ISD trustee, where his service was deemed highly controversial.

5. Morath will oversee education across our state, which has recently dropped to 43 (of 50) in the nation, one of the worse in the county.

4. Morath has close to no experience serving students in public schools, meaning he has no experience serving special education, english language learners, students in danger of dropping out, or struggling students.

3. He has indicated that he supports the removal of elected school boards and wants to replace them with TEA appointed boards, totally eliminating local control of public education!

2. He has strongly supported assessments and test-driven education, meaning he does not and will not support reducing the number of tests that our children are required to take.

1. He is a strong proponent for digitized learning and wants to replace the standard classroom and teacher with a computer and online learning from a remote location.
