Peace everyone,

Below is info. about an independent film called "Garifuna in Peril" which will be screened as a part of th
e New York African Diaspora Film Festival at Columbia University next Friday, January 18th at 6:30pm. The Garifuna are African-Indigenous people from Central America, and the film discusses the history of struggle for Garifuna people to protect their culture.

This is a synopsis:
A Garifuna language teacher, Ricardo, struggles to preserve his endangered Afro-Amerindian culture by building a language school back in his home village in Honduras, Central America. This project becomes complicated by the expansion plans of a nearby tourist resort into indigenous territory. Historical parallels are invoked as Ricardo’s son rehearses a stage play about the Garifuna people’s last stand against British colonialism over 200 years ago in their motherland, the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean.

More info on the film is here: http://www.garifunainperilmovie.com/  The trailer is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6_zuX_UA0Y  I'll be going to the screening. Let me know if anyone is interested in going. You can buy tickets at the website.

Peace,
Jay
