3 Ways to Help Now

Dear Zeeshan,

Pakistan continues to be ravaged by the worst natural disaster in its history. The floods that killed 1,600 people have washed away the houses and livelihoods of 20 million others. The people affected by this disaster exceed the number impacted by the 2005 Pakistan Earthquake, Asian Tsunami, and Haiti earthquake combined.

ADP has been hard at work in the last few weeks, coordinating with our many partners on the ground and identifying the most deserving organizations to help. We wanted to highlight some of these for you in this e-mail.

1) Emergency Shelters in Thatta (Deadline: Tuesday, Sep 7th)
ADP has partnered with UNHCR this weekend to deliver emergency shelters (tents) to Thatta, an underserved region in southern Pakistan devastated by the recent flooding.  Approximately 300,000 people are currently in need of shelter, exposed to extreme temperatures near 95 F / 35 C. UNHCR is providing these tents with zero overhead at ADP's request and the camp will be operated by AHD, a local NGO we have worked with in the past.

You can read more and donate here.

$20: Individual - provide shelter for 1 person
$200: Family - provide shelter for 10 people
$500: Neighborhood - provide shelter for 50
$5,000: Community - provide shelter for 250
$10,000: Village - provide shelter for 500

Note: The donation deadline is Tuesday, September 7 at 10am Pacific time, so please help us spread the word widely!

2) Clean Drinking Water in Charsaddah
ADP's partner organization, Network for Education and Economic Development Services (NEEDS), requires $5,000 to install 20 hand-pumps that will provide clean drinking water to 12 villages.  We think highly of NEEDS and strongly encourage you to consider donating to them. Read more about the initiative here. You can make a donation here.

3) Other Ways to Help

Recommended Organizations:  Our volunteers have worked feverishly through a long list of larger organizations to select five that we are recommending for Pakistan flood relief based on their track record, specific flood relief plans and low overhead. You can find donation information for Oxfam, Mercy Corps, TCF, Doctors Worldwide and Muslim Hands on our website.

Flood Redevelopment Fund:  As the media attention around flood relief wanes, we are concerned that there will be little funding available for redevelopment. Similar to our Earthquake Redevelopment Fund in 2005, we have decided to set up a Flood Redevelopment Fund. You can donate to this fund if you want to support longer-term redevelopment through specific, hand-picked projects that ADP will support.

Finally, please appeal to your friends, colleagues and family to give. It matters. Tweet, buzz, facebook and email them. Here's a video you can include that one of ADP's volunteers (Usman Hassan) helped produce.

Thank you for everything you're doing. We will get through this together.
