Texas House members may vote on sex ed measures today!
In late-breaking news, the Texas Legislature may consider three meausres that would greatly improve the quality of sexuality education in our state.
On Wednesday, several lawmakers will make a final push to improve sex education in Texas classrooms when House members debate SB 283. Amendments by Representatives Castro (D-San Antonio), Villarreal (D-San Antonio) and Strama (D-Austin) would:
- Require that information on sexuality taught in Texas schools be medically accurate;
- Prohibit schools from discouraging the use of contraceptives; and
- Require that schools notify parents whether they teach sexuality education, and if they do, provide detailed information about its content.
These amendments were drawn from bills filed earlier in the session, including the Education Works Act, the Prevention Works Act and HB 1567. You can read more about these bills on our website.
