Please share:   All Parents/Students/Seniors in Newark

September is "National Library Card Sign Up Month"
and as far as children are concerned, NPL has an outreach
program to sign up children for library cards.  The Library staff does an excellent job of this. It is adults who fail to get or renew their library cards enough.  So let's have a big push for adults to sign up for library
cards.  So let's have a big push for adults to sign up for library cards.  Please go to either the Main Library or any branch library and get a library card ( <http://www.npl.org/Pages/Branches/index.html> click here for
locations).

* Non residents can obtain a Newark Library Card.

Subject: Newark Public Library related updates

Save Newark Libraries.org has transitioned to Preserve Newark Libraries.org.  Bookmark us and add our email address to your list of contacts.   There was great news from the Library.  The August-September 2011 furloughs were rescinded so the libraries are open for business as usual.  Follow this link for library schedule. Let’s keep up our support of the Library.  If you can afford it, make a tax deductible contribution to the Library.  You may not know this, but new acquisitions were curtailed due to budget flat lining; in person computer training classes are not available and Saturday hours at branch libraries do not exist.  Yes, you can help.  I use the example of “just $5 each”:  If the Newark Public Library (NPL) could receive “just $5 each” from every Newarker - approximately 280,000 of us - that would amount to $1,400,000.  All amounts, both large and small are accepted.  Do what you can.  Click here for more information.

You will begin to see events that are geared towards increased visibility to our Newark Public Library system (NPL).  September is “National Library Card Sign Up Month” and as far as children are concerned, NPL has an outreach program to sign up children for library cards.  The Library staff does an excellent job of this. It is adults who fail to get or renew their library cards enough.  So let’s have a big push for adults to sign up for library cards.  Please go to either the Main Library or any branch library and get a library card (click here for locations).  The list is complete with addresses, phone numbers, maps and bus routes.   If you are a member of an organization, packets of application forms and borrowers’ rules are available for distribution. Email me at this address for arrangements. (The completed library card application requires presentation in person along with proper id at any library location in order to receive the actual library card).  Once you have your card, use it.  To me, a library card is like a credit card with “easy” qualifications that gives me unlimited access to the world. I can borrow books, cd’s, dvd’s; read newspapers, magazines, brochures and fliers; look at the art displays – world class I might add; do some research; catch a movie; attend an event; learn something and have fun! Did you know that you can download eBooks, take computer training, prep for some careers online with your library card…and so much more.  Libraries are not just about book lending. I am hoping that we have 3,000 new adult sign ups (or renewals) Citywide by the end of September. That’s about 1% of all Newarkers.

Preserve Newark Libraries is working as Project Managers in conjunction with some members of the Administrative Library Staff and persons in City Hall on programs that will both engage Newarkers and help raise needed funds for NPL.   The first fund raising event is from West Ward Councilman Ronald C. Rice called “Run, Ron, Run”.  (Councilman Rice is running in the 53rd Annual Atlantic City Marathon on October 6, 2011).  Of importance here is that Councilman Rice is looking for sponsors for the West Ward Library Endowment Fund. His target sponsorship amount is $25,000.00 for this fund.  Every dollar raised is a dollar less that NPL has to find to fund these libraries.

Our award winning library system needs us as much as we need it.  It is not too late to contact the members of the City Council to ask them to find as much money as they can for NPL.  We deserve the very best.
