A Message from Councilman Baraka's office:

Greetings,

Applebee's has agreed to sponsor South Ward Reads Summer Reading Competition by giving the top winners gift certificates for a complimentary lunch or dinner for two!  Their certificate with cover one appetizer, two entrees, one dessert and two beverages.

What does this mean?  It means instead of receiving a $20 gift certificate, the top two winners for high school and top two winners for elementary school will receive a gift certificate worth $55 at Appleebee's!

It is not too late to sign up. The Summer Reading Competition ends September 2nd.  Contact a Center of Hope or The Office of Councilman Ras J. Baraka to register your child. The competition is open to all elementary and high school students.  Applications are attached to this email as well.

Councilman Baraka is addressing crime as a public health issue in Newark’s South Ward.  In his holistic approach, he has launched a literacy campaign entitled, “South Ward Reads” to impact the education of students in the ward and help prevent acts of crime.  Through this campaign, the Councilman is asking all children to commit to reading a minimum of one hour each week. The Summer Reading Competition is a component of South Ward Reads.
