Subject: A Declaration of War on the Children of Newark by Newark Public Schools
I write because I am very disturbed that the Newark Public School District with almost $1B budget would even contemplate not serving children grades 3 and up, breakfast, lunch, and snacks; yes, that is what they propose to do to close the 2011-2012 budget gap.
This is unconscionable to say the least.
I need all of you to call the Superintendent's Office on or before September 6, 2011 to voice your great displeasure at such a harmful policy. We cannot balance the school budget off the backs of our hungry children. Please discuss this on your various networks and call 9973-733-7333 and request that the Superintendent and the Board FIND the money to feed children ages 7 and upward.
The value of nutritional meals cannot be overestimated. There is a direct negative impact on learning when children are hungry, Perhaps, if the paid consultants and Transitional Team would have put more energy into ensuring the availability of necessary funds and/or raising monies to ensure that our children eat while at school instead of wasting time and energy on "non-workable education reforms".
I ask all of you again to call the
Office of the Superintendent (973-733-7333) to ensure that all children eat in school during the school year 2011-2012 and/or, call or write your senators, assemblypersons, city council members, etc.
It is our moral duty to protect the most vulnerable of this student population; they are our children.
