friends and fellow travelers:

Teachers Unite is an organization I've discussed w/some of you before. They do social justice unionism and community engagement work. They are holding an organizing Institute in late August (see below). I've discussed, with some of you, our hopes for next year and onward in the Montclair area, and I would love it if I saw you there, too. For others, you may be interested or just may want to share with your networks.

They do a lot of stuff centered around NYC/AFT, but, for those of you not in NYC schools, there is enough generally-applicable stuff to make going worth it.

How can we improve working and learning conditions? Organize!

 

Teachers Unite is excited to open registration for our Summer 2011 Organizing Institute. From August 23-25, learn from union organizers, community organizers, parents, students and teachers who have led successful campaigns for social justice and workers' rights.

 

Be a part of this unique 3-day institute outlined below, and start the school year with an organizing plan!

3 Day Overview: August 23-25

Each day will begin at 9:00am and end at 4:00pm. Participants will provide their own lunch. We will announce the downtown Manhattan location as soon as it is confirmed. 

 

DAY 1 Overview: 9am-4pm

Plenary: TBA

 

Social Justice Organizing: An Approach to Building Labor & Community Power

 

Lunch (Participants will provide their own lunch)

 

Workshop Options:

1) How School Staff, Parents and Youth Can Organize Together Within a School (including an overview of SLTs and how they work)

2) Understanding the United Federation of Teachers Local 2 and Building Community Through Chapter Organizing

 

Strategies and Tactics that Build Collaboration Among Parents, Teachers, Students 

 

DAY 2 Overview: 9am-4pm

How to Conduct Organizing Conversations (developing activists, holding 1:1 meetings and assessing enthusiasm)

 

Lunch (Participants will provide their own lunch)

 

How to Choose and Evaluate a Winning Campaign and How to Build a Campaign Strategy that Grows Power  

 

Building Power in Your Borough: meet with others to evaluate and choose a mini-campaign for the fall

 

DAY 3 Overview: 9am-4pm

Developing Strategy and Choosing Tactics

 

Tactic Workshops (a range of workshops will be offered that will build skills in areas such as public relations, creative action planning, etc.)

 

Community Fall Campaign Planning

 

Lunch (Participants will provide their own lunch)
