Explanation of the decision to stop sending the newsletter

I was planning to explain in the last newsletter, but several people already contacted me, so it'll be right to explain now.

The short answer is that the newsletter doesn’t serve its purpose anymore, i.e., to get people active.

The longer answer is that when Katie Jenness, Wayne Hsiung (both went on to other things since) and I started sending the newsletter back in 9/2008, it filled the void of a central source for animal rights activism info. At the time, it was much more difficult to spread the word about actions, so the newsletter was very helpful. However, two important and related things happened in the last 13 years:

1. The rise of social media, especially facebook, that became the main source of info about actions.

2. The decline in email use, especially among young people.

As a result, for the past several years, activists don’t get info about actions from the newsletter. Terminating the newsletter, while may be sad, is a (late) adjustment to present day communications. I will continue to spread the word about actions on the Coalition facebook and hope that you will follow it.

Hope this clarifies my decision.
