Use your assigned marine ecosystem description and illustration to decide which abiotic factors are impacting the organisms in your ecosystem. Place check marks next to those factors in the chart attached. Then write one or more examples of how that factor is impacting organisms in the ecosystem.

Changing tides cause changes in the rocky shore area, making the rocky shore one of the most physically stressful ecosystems. Organisms that live along the rocky shore must be able to tolerate extreme changes in temperature, salinity, and wave action.

Corals are made up of tiny animals called polyps. Relatives of sea anemones and jellyfish, polyps are tiny, translucent organisms with a hard base called a calicle.  Calicles form the hard structure of a coral reef.  Some corals contain a single polyp, bust most are colonial corals that contain thousands of polyps.

Ocean currents play an important role in the open ocean community. Open ocean currents carry nutrients to different parts of the ocean. Currents also help some animals migrate and allow others to distribute their eggs throughout the ocean.

Rocky Shore Coral Reef Open Ocean
Abiotic FactorExamplesAbiotic FactorExamplesAbiotic FactorExamples
Temperaturexcertain plants cant survive in certain temperaturesxdifferent fish require a certain type of tempaturexsome sharkes need colder water
Salinityxthe rocky shore is affected by freshwater runoff xthe coral is largely affected by the salt levelxit affects the fish's environment
Nutrientsxmany algae eaters and other similar organisma live in the rocky shore and need nutrientsxplentiful organisms that require all types of nutrietnts to survivexliving organisms need to have a constant source of food
Oxygen
Solar Energyxplants in the rocky shore need to use the sun for photosynthesisxCoral and other algea types rely on the sun for energyxorganisms such as alage need the sun for food
Water ClarityxFish that live in this area need to see to eat, move, etc.
Tidesxif the tide gets too low, an organism such as the starfish might get strandedxtides can affect fish's envornment/ movement of schools
Wavesxwaves bring new organisms and substances to the rocky shore
Substratexwaves are constantly moving sand creating mounds
Aerial Exposurex
Currentsxcontrol certain patterns of the fish

Rocky shore community
1 tempeture= tempeture would make the water warmer and it would give some organisms a heat problem.
2. The intake of salt would help the sea life breath easer bad it would help maintain the clearness of the water.
3. Nutrients. Organisms would be eaten by other organisms and this would help conserve energy.
4. Oxygen would help the land animals breathe and would help them survive on land.
5 solar energy gives all if the wild life a warm tempeture and helps them survive more efficient.
6 water clarity is perfect for the wild life so they can see the perfectly and so they can find their pray.
