Whatcan I say, I like a good challenge. So, when the owners of a new escape room coming to Staunton called Crack the Code Escape Room asked me to bring some friends along to beta test the game, I couldn't resist.
It's a live version of the game Clue, according to co-owner Beth Brown. Clues to help with the puzzles can be given via televisions, phone calls or radio transmissions and each room has a set of puzzles to complete before you can escape. For this game, clues will show up on a television in each room.
We tackled da Vinci's office. Let me tell you, there are a lot of codes to crack, lots of puzzles to figure out and lots of things that deal with numbers, letters and combinations. One combination will lead you to another, then another. Each piece of paper or puzzle will allow you to get one step further.
According to Brown, we made it about halfway through the puzzles, which wasn't too bad considering we had about half a team. It was kind of overwhelming. There are lots of drawers, lots of locks and a lot of possible combinations that could unlock them.
Overall, even though my team didn't escape, it was a lot of fun. Since we didn't solve it, it makes me want to come back and see if I can with a larger group. I don't want to give too much away, but hopefully with the photos from this article, some helpful tips and an insider's perspective, it will give you a better idea of what to expect.

As fantastic as Dean's rooms are, when he GM's, the entire experience becomes 100% more terrifying! The set is creepy, the scares come from EVERYWHERE. Definitely some of the scariest escape rooms in the UK
Placement puzzles don't work, had to be told to pick something up, and place it back down again for it to use... also use of Disney songs & Disney imagery within the room, and an image on the clue screen that clearly hadn't been paid for...

What is an escape room?
An escape room is a physical adventure game in which players solve a series of puzzles using clues, hints, and strategy to complete the objectives at hand. Players are given a set time limit to unveil the secret plot which is hidden within the rooms.
Are escape rooms good for teambuilding or groups?
Of course! We offer experiences and game play for individuals, family events, group events, as well as corporate team building and celebrations.
Are cell phones allowed in the room?
No, we ask that you keep them stored safely away while you are participating in the escape room. We want to keep the inside of the room a mystery, photos are not allowed inside the room.
Is there an age limit?
This is a tricky one. If you book all 6-8 available spots in a room there is no minimum age limit. If you book less than a full room we require all participants to be at least age 13 or above. Any participant under the age of 18 will be required to have a paying adult with them.
I am purchasing fewer tickets than maximum available for that room. Does that mean the remaining slots are filled by other guests?
Yep, but remember what we said before, the more the merrier. It's a great way to meet some new people!
What if my group and I want the whole room to ourselves?
Not a problem, just book all the spaces for the time slot you are interested in. Yes, this means it will cost you a bit more, but you will not be placed with other guests if you do that.
Can I cancel my booking?
As long as you cancel at least 24 hours in advance you will receive a full refund, less than 24 hours in advance will be refunded 50%. No shows are charged at 100%.
How many people can play in the virtual reality station at a time?
Real Escapes has two VR Stations and two VR Racing Simulators. The maximum participants per session is four. For a VR session, half of the allotted time will be spent in the racing simulators and the other half of the time will be spent on the Virtuix Omni. This allows everyone in the session a chance to try out both setups!
Is this safe? Will I get nauseous or light-headed?
Virtual reality is perfectly safe, and many advances have been made in the technology since its introduction to ensure a very low risk of nausea and disorientation.
I have glasses. Can I experience VR?
You certainly can! We recommend wearing contacts if possible, but the headset does fit over most glasses. Sometimes both our near-sighted and far-sighted friends need to use their corrective lenses, so bring them to be safe.
Are there any physical limitations that will hinder my experience?
Full body motion is required for most games. This includes walking around the space, ducking or dodging, and moving your arms and head. Our racing simulators are not as motion oriented.
Are there any age restrictions?
Any age can play, but we do require a parent on site with all minors under 16 and a signed waiver on file for all players. Typically, kids who are 8+ have a great experience. We have had plenty of kids younger than that, but it's on a case-by-case basis to see if everything will fit and be comfortable for them.
Are there any size requirements to experience the VR?
Yes, due to the nature of the equipment we do have some height and waist restrictions for the Virtuix Omni stations. Guests must be at least 50 inches tall, and have a waist no bigger than 46 - 48 inches.
What is your cancellation policy?
As long as you cancel 24 hours in advance there will be no charge. If you cancel less than 24 hours in advance, you will be charged for your time slot.
Can I bring my friends/family/significant other?
Yes! VR is a spectator sport, and you can always watch others play on our TVs hooked to every headset. We also have multiplayer options: if you sign up for more than one station, you can play games together from inside VR.
