Summary of COAA-SCC 2008 Summer Workshop and Picnic

The Southern California Chapter of the Chinese-American Oceanic and
Atmospheric Association (COAA-SCC) organized a summer Workshop/BBQ on
Aug. 23, 2008 at the beautiful campus of University of California,
Irvine. The theme of the Workshop is Climate Change and Implications.
The theme was selected to reflect recent trends in atmospheric and
oceanic research and to stimulate discussion among participants. The
workshop featured two invited speakers, Prof. Yuk Ling Yung from
Caltech and Prof. Sam Shen from California State University, San
Diego. Prof. Yung shared his vision and cutting edge development in
the research of climate change. Prof. Shen talked about his personal
experience and his involvement in the detection of climate change
signal. The workshop also exhibited six posters covering broad
research topics such as ENSO dynamics, community land surface model
development, atmospheric methane change, air pollution around Los
Angeles, and real-time forecasting of oceanic tides. After the
workshop the participants had lively discussions while enjoying the
great BBQ food. Totally there were about 48 participants from UCI,
UCLA, UCSD, Caltech, CSU-SD and JPL. The participants included
professors, research scientists, and graduate students. The event
provided a good opportunity for Southern California scientists to know
and network with each other by sharing their recent work in an
informal and relaxed Southern California manner. In the workshop, Dr.
Yu Gu (UCLA) gave a detailed report on the Sichuan earthquake donation
organized by COAA. The workshop was organized by Prof. Jin-Yi Yu (UCI)
and Dr. Xiaochun Wang (JPL) with many inputs from other members of the
Executive Committee of COAA-SCC. Fuu-ming Kai and many other UCI
participants volunteered for the logistic details of the Workshop/BBQ
