An Arkansas man running a dog rescue out of his home was
arrested and accused of “engaging in a sexual act with an
animal,” police said.
Jonathan Ford, 32, was booked on a bestiality charge after an
investigation into the Pope County man’s “I Love Lucy Pet
Rescue” operation. Ford wrote on his website that he would take
in abandoned and abused pets and help “find foster homes and
permanent homes for animals in need” in rural Arkansas.
But other animal rescuers said Ford, who acted as his own
independent animal shelter, came “across as a different person.”
He’d ask no questions but was eager to take in any animals at
all, Clarissa Riedmueller, owner of KC Pet Rescue in Morrilton
told KTHV.
Ford twice contacted Riedmueller in the last several months, she
said.
“We kind of stay away from people like that, so we didn't really
get into his business and into his rescue,” she told the news
station. “He was always out to get any kind of dog very quickly.
He didn't ask a lot of the normal rescue questions that we
would, what's their temperament, things like that. He was just
going ‘Hey I'll take and help. I'll help.’ I like the part that
he was trying to help, it's just not knowing what he was doing
behind the scenes. He just seemed a little different.”
Ford runs a Facebook page and website highlighting the different
dogs and cats he has available for adoption. But he was arrested
last Wednesday and charged with a misdemeanor count of
bestiality.
The animals have all been removed from Ford’s home and given to
a different rescue organization.
Riedmueller said she always knew something was off with Ford,
“but I was sickened about someone calling themselves a rescue,
then doing something like that,” she told KTHV.
Another animal advocate, Kimberly Bodle, started a petition
online, now with approximately 3,700 signatures, urging Ford to
receive the maximum punishment available under the law.
Bodle wrote that she alerted police to Ford’s alleged bestiality
after receiving photos “depicting Jonathan Ford engaging in
sexual activity with the dogs in his care.
“We were also made aware that he allowed the dogs to penetrate
him as well,” she wrote.
Two days later, Ford was arrested and held at the Pope County
Jail.
