this is a tough one. I might want to go there to see the stuff but after reading details about and the lord of the flies like underbelly of the organization and after hearing effing King Kenny and others gave their awards back and after hearing dave despain report on the mess and after not hearing them do more that dodge and deflect bob and weave deny and not take responsibility. I'm inclined to never go hear the place, let alone give them money for a membership. I think they are even going to sell off the museum like that did AMA racing? why on earth would I want to reward that kind of bad behavior. They are self destructive.

I was on the inside for several years and and can only say it's likely all true and more.  Sick, dysfunctional organization that has been around way too long imho.  I don't even like going to VMD (which I used to head in the early years) for that reason.  Most members are nice people trying to support motorcycling, but unwitting enablers of this mess.

OK, done ranting now - cool blue ocean, cool blue ocean ...

OK, not trying to start anything, but it sounds like everyone is still fairly cool headed about this.

I just joined the ama last year (primarily for moto-cross) but another thing motivated me.  I currently work at OSU and the "Progressive"  thinkers have no problems steam rolling groups like motorcyclists.  Smart cars are safer so just outlaw motorcycles would be a good example of the kind of thought process I see.  And man, when people find out your ride at the university they really get condescending and self righteous.

Are there other groups out there doing anything along the lines of what the AMA does politically?

Locally yes, but not nationally.  They are pretty much the only (or biggest) game in town for many things motorcycle including the two activities you are in it for, and they do serve a purpose.  Promoting membership was a big part of my job for years, and I believed in it and did it well.

Didn't mean to make any members feel bad - I am still registered as a life member myself but I don't give them any more money.  Similarly I graduated from OSU, but don't give them any more money.  Just saying I have looked/lived behind the curtain at the ama headquarters and I can't un-see that.

They definitely have had their issues, but I hate to throw in the towel. After earning a lifetime membership the hard way several years ago, (that means paying year by year instead of buying in on the front end) the very next year, Rob Dingle-something, who prefers to call himself President, CEO, Chairman and probably Grand Poohba, sent a form saying that Life Members were no longer entitled to free AMA magazine for life, and reduced some other benefits as well. Now the magazine is no great loss as I find it rather pedestrian in any case, but the point remains a commitment is a commitment. They then proceeded with the typical corporate head count reduction and of course blamed it on previous management shenanigans. Okay, rant over let's all go for a ride.

Issues? I don't think you understand what an understatement that is. Have you read about the story? can you imagine Kenny Roberts angrily give his awards back and asking to be removed from their Hall of fame? And other's asking to be removed from the hall? the response was corporate speak non denial denial vague in complete responses that never accepted any responsibility. With them selling racing and the hall being for sale what is lest? defending people from the greeniacs? Nobody is going to outlaw motorcycles in favor of cars people can't afford anyway. Don't give them a dime.

Here is dave despain's letter to them resigning I don't know a more credible person ever in the motorsports press than dave. And his  letter is a mild version of what's said and written before and after his resignation.

There is other material about it although I can't find the one that was the broadest most detrailed expose.

Lord of the flies was actually what I thought of while reading. I'd known some but was and still shocked. Hideous shameful arrogant laze money grubbing unfeeling insencitive my way or the highway... all words that come to mind.

and it all happened behind closed doors with no accountablity transparancy or a plan with what they were going to do and  accomplish. they just want do keep the money flowing with plan to show how to fix the problem of egos and infighting.

the organization now deserves to go down the tubes and without the loyalty of those that remember when
"AMA" meant something they'd be gone tomorrow.

I got no pleasure out of reaching these conclusions. I was a loyalist when younger.

But being from the "question authority" generation I wasn't quick to buy into the corporate marketing department platitudes the would trot out. And they remained mostly mute and in denial when under fire like all that they had to do was ride it out and people started defecting it became shockingly and sadly obvious they'd become a completely corrupt organization.

From the spot this article end it gets worse instead of better... but I'm out of research time.

But Bruce's first mention was pretty much pull no punches and I'm glad to have heard from him seeing it on the the inside just how bad it was. I became like Watergate in that it was the lies trying to cover their asses with out taking responsibility that exposed the underbelly.

Bruce, do you see any reason to thing they redeemed themselves?

I learned after my first wreck to tell the ER Docs I fell off a horse. "We'll have you back in the saddle in a jiffy!" Thanks Doc.

I love that explanation - I'll have to remember that.

Just made me realize that, in almost 50 years of riding, I've never had to have that conversation.  Not that I haven't crashed several times, and probably should have a bunch more.  Got hurt the worst as a car passenger.
