Haven’t heard from anyone here for a while, so I thought I’d ask. What is everyone up to? Doing ok? Got any projects to keep yourselves busy over this extended break?

I'm working from home. ..which is confusing since I teach a hands on machining and a robotics course. It's kind of like teaching motorcycle riding with YouTube videos (particularly moto madness)!
Got everything squared away now so starting some old vapor blasting jobs on putzing around the garage. First time in years!

Haha, I can assure you it's no break!

I have been working from home AND being daddy-daycare to two 5 year-olds since schools closed on the 17th. (My wife still has to work at her hospital).

However, "shelter-in-place" at the weekends has given me a lot more time in the garage, and I'm almost done with my "Steelster" Mk III project. Replacing the 883 motor with a 1200 in my '98 Sportster scrambler custom. Also it's getting a nice 2-1 exhaust.

Cheers, R.

Hope all are doing well. As far as projects I’m at about 80% complete with a 76 Suzuki water buffalo. Hopefully by end of April it’s rocking and rolling. Did a full service on my Guzzi V7 and need to get around to doing the same on the Wee Strom.

Chris L - how do you like the VStrom? Been looking at one or something similar for a while now. I like the Moto Guzzi V85 a lot... but $$$

Richard - Ha, sounds like it's at least as busy as usual for you! Sounds like that Sportster is going to be pretty sweet when you're done. Is the 883 to 1200 a straight swap in those?

Josh - Yeah I bet that is pretty awkward. How are the students handling it? Hopefully better than Gavin sees his homework! "It's just busy work", "We didn't go over any of this", "I don't know why they even assign ANY work" and so on... Sounds like the rest is fairly relaxing. Maybe you can restore that old (Japanese?) bike sitting in the corner in all this time.

Andrew, mine is an 05 650, I’ve had since 08. Bought with 13K miles and now has about 39k on it. Not that much as my riding is split amongst bikes. The V Strom is not the best at anything but pretty darn good at just about everything. Commuting, touring, scratching. The only thing I’d avoid is taking it to an REAL off road ride. Like many adventure bikes it’s just too big and heavy for actual off roading. It’s torque heavy but still revs out with decent top end. Can cruise highway plus speeds all day. Several friends have ridden it, got off and said “if it didn’t say 650 on the side I’d have said it was a 1000. Mine is lowered one inch which helps me. Again not much to look at compared to a classic but oh so practical for the real world.
Cripes I should work for Suzuki. Your welcome to take it for a ride anytime. Maintenance over these miles consists of a few oil changes and one chain and sprockets change. I have everything on hand for a full service but just keep putting it off due to always working on some ancient crock.

I’m also digging the V85 a lot. It would be the perfect stable mate for my V7 cafe..trying to corral the cash. I bought my V7 from All Seasons in Wooster, I’ve dealt with Enzo from Cadre Cycle in Deerfield, Ohio as well and he seems a decent dealer.

Andrew and All,

Good to hear from you guys, and to take a little vintage bike break in the middle (beginning?) of all this.

About the only thing I've been working on is a master bath remodel at home and various issues at our church building.  NOT exciting; ready to be done with both (but the bath is gonna be nice - heated floors, etc).

Chris, your comments prompted me to send a couple of my way-back photos (see below) - well, if you call the early '90's way back.  The water buff is a '75 mild custom, with mag wheels and a cool 3 into 1 expansion chamber exhaust that dropped a TON of weight and sounded bitchin'.

The '92 Yam TDM 850 was an early Adventure Tourer and a great bike (10 valve dohc twin!) that I did some traveling on - put on a lot of miles and kept for many years.  Definitely all street though.  Got my last 2 tickets while riding it, both out of state and really undeserved.  But the thousand+ times I did deserve and didn't get one kinda balanced it out - I chalk them up to karma.  Most people thought the TDM was just weird back then, and I never saw anyone else riding one.  Hard to find now.

I'm sure the DL650 is an excellent all around bike - if you had to only own only one, that would be a good choice.  I've had 3 SV650's - great motor, great bike.  Can't believe how cheap you can get them used - everybody should have one in the garage.

Is this the TDM that was at the Stoneridge bike night a couple years ago? Very cool, ahead of its time..Yamaha could bring it back out, just put a 270 degree crank in it like many parallel twins seem to be going to. Love your old Buffalo. Mines a 76 A model color looks the same. And you are so right about the exhaust, each pipe feels like 40 lbs.!

Hey Andrew,

The project started as a ‘98 Hugger. (16” rear wheel). The rationale being it would be an comfortable bike for my wife who rode dirt bikes. Also, I wanted a rigid evo, because back then I had aspirations of putting it in a featherbed frame.

The “new” engine, is a ‘97 1200 Custom crate motor. Which is dimensionally identical to the 883.

Cosmetically, the “custom” engine is fully chromed, with black contrast cut jugs, compared with the alloy Hugger. Not my personal preference, but it’s a black bike, so it will be eye catching.

The only thing I had to do, was replace the sprocket on the gearbox, with the one from the Hugger. This serves two purposes. It keeps the gear ratio low-ish, which is appropriate for a scrambler. And... I don’t have to replace the stock speedometer.

The latter would not normally be an issue, but the glass was shattered a few years back in an accident, and I spent many, many hours learning to cut glass to replace it, and as a result, I have become rather emotionally attached to that speedo...

"... as a result, I have become rather emotionally attached to that speedo..."

Perhaps you should explore that further on an episode of "Jerry Springer", Dick?

Dick is sitting center stage, cradling his beloved speedo.  Suddenly, the wife charges in from offstage.  "I knew it, you bastard!  All those hours in the garage ..."
Dick cries out, "But baby, it was all for you!".

I definitely need to get out today.

I’m on week 3 here working from home. Dusted off the shadow the other day and ran around town. The CB is running fair, clutch needs to work itself loose after sitting for a couple years, also needs a good carb sync. Other than that, housework, home repairs I’ve been putting off and skateboarding here on my ramp. Surviving. Eating lots of pasta and pizza.

I'm pretty much drinking beer and watching Netflix, so nothing has changed. Loretta is bored so that intrudes on TV time. She had me painting the basement and making stands for my antique outboards. I'm dreaming about building a small boat. Dreaming doesn't make me too tired. I have not started a bike since last fall but they all ran when parked. :-)

Kev, tie the clutch lever back to the grip. The plates will slowly separate. I do that and it works if I'm lucky.

Very impressive, Tom; sounds like you should update your resume to include "Adept at multi-tasking" - assuming you are doing them simultaneously.  How many hours have you worked up to?  I'm getting tired just thinking about it.

What kind of ramp, Kevin? The small vert ramp in your back yard kind of thing?

Tom, sounds like you've got the life these days. Only small breaks to do things between beer and Netflix. Have you watched anything interesting? I watched that "Tiger King" train wreck the other day. It was fascinating in all of the worst ways.

I just got put on "furlough" so now I'm pretty much wide open to do anything. My day usually consists of helping my nephew with his online school work and getting overwhelmed by the amount of work left to do on my BSA A10. It seems like every time we're ready to make some progress, something else needs "checked" or bought from England, delaying the progress by weeks at a time. Frustrating.

We were checking the end float on the crankshaft before assembly and realized it was out of spec, so needed some spacers. The problem is... the spacers go BETWEEN the weights and the outer main bearing... so off the bearing came and a new one ordered.... from England.

Other than that, the cylinder head is in Michigan at the machine shop. The Norton's cylinder head is in Colorado getting new thread inserts fitted. So a lot of hurry up and wait at the moment. Dad's Moto Guzzi got some Wixom side bags fitted. Maybe he can post some pictures soon. It looks good.

Bruce, I should be clear, my wife is in no way intimidated by a '98 MoCo speedo. But if it was a Smiths Chronometric . . .

Turns out I spoke too soon. I assumed the VSS (speed sensor) picked up off the final shaft, but no. . . This is HD, so it's from the 4th gear layshaft, giving me a roughly 7% under-read. Now I just have to decide whether I a) can be trusted to do the mental calculations when I need to**, b) dig back into my electronics past, and build a frequency converter. c) just suck it up and buy one. (Still cheaper than a replacement speedo).

Otherwise, this was a very productive weekend. I got the exhaust on, hooked up the auxiliary tank, propped the iPhone against my gin-and-tonic, and hit the starter button. Despite sitting idle for 23 years, the damn thing started instantly! Which was gratifying, because I probably spent three or four hours deciding on the initial carb settings. Drilling out the welch plug so I could make the idle mixture a tad richer. (Don't want to blue those stainless steel downpipes...)

I videoed it because... well I don't know why, but I knew I would never get another chance, there's no "do-over" on a first start. I was wondering how I could prove it was a first start, but the deafening clatter from the hydraulic lifters should be all the evidence I need :-) That settled down after about only 15s, justifying the 45 mins I spent priming the oil pump.

During this shelter-in-place, I'm reaping the benefits of being a low-grade hoarder. I found a part-used S&S Keihin tuning kit, which had obviously been used for a big-twin, as it had just the needle, slow and main jet I needed for a "stage-2" tune.

Despite the weather having taken a break from the typical "Sunny and 65" we get this time of year, I couldn't resist taking it for a short spin. Despite looking nothing like the bike that rolled out of the factory, the engine I replaced was stock, and in factory tune (the relative lightness of the post- Sawzall bike made up for it). So having a stage-1 1200, with the same low gearing was quite the shock indeed.

Now I just need the weather to improve, so I can really get down to tuning.

Cheers, Richard.

** Generally I don't worry about speedo accuracy (I ride British bikes after all) but I do like to know how fast I'm going when in the presence of the CHP. I merged onto the freeway one morning going to work (on my "big" tuned HD), to my surprise, I saw a giant 4 lane wide gap, I had to go for it, so I gave it some welly, right up to 4th gear. Then I glanced at the speedo 95 . . . Then I saw the blue lights. The CHP Officer came up to me, visibly flustered:

CHP: "Whuh, uh, whuh..."

Me: "Ah, yes, I did rather overcook it, sorry . . ."

CHP: "95 dude! RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!... You, you can't do that dude!"

Me: "I'm sorry, I'll pay more attention to my speed in future".

Very cool! You can almost feel the excitement for the first start. Not that you appeared that way; just in the couple of hesitations before hitting the button. The... "hm, I think I did everything right" sort of pause. I suppose that pause is remembering all of the time you just spent carb tuning, etc just in case it DOESN'T start. You know, like one of those flashbacks on TV where it shows precisely where they went wrong, right before it actually goes wrong!

It sounds like your last CHP encounter went pretty well. I'm impressed.

Thought I'd give everyone another update.

Dad and I were busy last weekend assembling the crankshaft into the cases on the BSA A10. It was nice to see some progress for once. We put the MAP cycle H-Beam connecting rods on and starting assembling the timing side before realizing I was missing my old oil pump (getting replaced with the high flow SRM one) and the special washer needed. More waiting for parts. I seem to recall this process when we were assembling the Moto Guzzi. Speaking of the MG, here are some photos of the bike with the Wixom bags fitted. They look great on the bike.

My first attempt at posting a pic. This was after the Steelster Mk III test ride.

I have a couple of jobs to do, like re-calibrating the speedo to compensate for the new gearbox, also I need to do something about the sprocket cover, to fix the alloy/chrome miss-match. But I'm feeling good about the result. I really like the 2-1 exhaust.

I know its not vintage, but it is 17 years old now and what I ride the most.  Just washed it for the first time in 2 years last weekend, and did a half-ass job at that.  Discovered that a mouse tried to live in it at some point last winter and chewed a few wires under the seat, but the only thing not working is the front lever brake light.

I have a feeling that when I can't ride anymore (perish the thought!), I may miss this one the most - just suits me.  Probably won't ever be considered a classic, but to me it already is.  A bit like my wife - probably don't deserve her, but I do appreciate her.  Don't tell Jean I said that last thing.

Great bikes. Appreciate the motor donation to the Wee Stroms as well!

Bruce,

That is such a nice bike. Very clean indeed. Looks like your half-ass job is much better than most! Not many of those around, either. I've seen a few SV1000S models, but not many of the standard model. When I got my 06' SV650S, I kept looking at it and wondering why it still looked so "modern." Still haven't figured it out, but I'll always enjoy looking at them.

Oops, looks like I mistook your 1000 for the 650 Bruce! Apologies for my flub. Both are great bikes I’d say.
