Hi CO CCL Social Media volunteers:

As you undoubtedly know, our national CCL folks rolled out a big "final push" campaign this week to contact Senators. We are in the final stretch to amplify our message.

Robert Hendricks implores us to spend time on Twitter and tweet Senators - he recommends tweeting all 50 of them. I have forwarded his email below. Just go to the google sheet in his email.

Please consider this action - he provides easy-to-follow instructions, along with this suggested tweet -
[Twitter handle] please put a #PriceOnCarbon in the #BuildBackBetter bill. Make polluters pay for their pollution. We can't get to greenhouse reductions of 50% by 2030 without it, as analyses such as https://rhg.com/research/us-climate-policy-2030/ show. Millions of Americans want this.

An alternative tweet is suggested by the #OutdoorClimateAction CCL team: [Senator twtter handle] Please support a carbon price in the reconciliation package so we can achieve 50% emission. reductions by 2030.

Thanks everyone!
Susan Ludwig

Robert Hendricks sent you the following message:

Message from the Progressive Outreach Action Team group on Community:

We need your help this week! Tweet the 50 Senate Democrats urging them to support carbon pricing in the final Reconciliation Bill. Hate Twitter? Please read on before rejecting this!

Why? We still could pass carbon fee & dividend through Reconciliation.
You, like me, may have worked for many months on climate. I’m asking you for two more hours to try to push it over the finish line. If 100 of us do this, that’s an additional 5,000 messages to Senators!
The Senate is working through the last few items on their version of the Build Back Better Bill. Sen. Schumer wants it finished this week. WSJ reported yesterday final negotiations include “a few climate measures” and members of the Finance Committee, including Chair Sen. Wyden, are pushing to include a price on carbon in the bill. Without a price on carbon, the measure in the Bill won’t cut greenhouse gases to 50% below 2005 levels.

The Task
Write a tweet to each of the 50 Democratic senators. If you don’t have a Twitter account, it takes about 15 minutes to set one up. At most, this only takes 2 hours. 2 hours to influence 50 senators, what a great use of time. You might never get this chance again!

Why Twitter?
Most members of Congress ignore messages from non-constituents. With Twitter, they can’t ignore any messages because they don’t know where the senders live. Twitter is also the Senators’. most-used social media platform.

You Don’t Use Twitter?
I didn’t either – until I realized that with Twitter I could impact all 50 Democratic Senators. I decided it was worth it. Once I got going, it was much easier than I thought it would be.

OK, What Do You Do? (If You’ve Already Done This, Do It Again)
   1. Download and open the spreadsheet attached to this email or go to this Google Sheet for all the Senators’ Twitter handles (addresses) and a suggested Tweet.
   2. Open Twitter on your computer.
   3. Where it says “What’s happening”, copy and paste the first Senator’s handle.
   4. Then copy and paste the suggested tweet (or your edited version of it).
   5. Then click “Tweet”.
   6. Repeat 49 more times.
   7. (Optional) Log your action in the Action Tracker. Select “Contact with Legislator” –> “Social Media Interaction” –> “Legislator” –> Additional Legislators” and select the 50 Democratic Senators. (Don’t bother linking to your post).
   8. (Optional) Email me that you sent the tweets so I can report on the success (or failure) of this effort.
   9. Send this email to anyone you know who might join us in this fight for our climate.

Thank you for your help!

Bob Hendricks, Team Leader, Progressive Outreach Action Team

Final push indeed!  Tweets made and tracked. Noticed that Senator Catherine Cortez Masto's handle is @CortezMasto and no longer @CatherineForNV.

It's now or never, great effort everyone!

Kind regards,
Nancy

I would encourage people to give this a go. Using three windows, one for Tweetdeck, one with the text of the tweet, and one for Hendricks' spreadsheet with the Twitter handles, I got through the list of Democratic senators in 20 minutes. The hashtag #priceoncarbon is full of these tweets from all over the country today.

I did it also -- I did it through tweetdeck also, as the my personal twitter page told me that I had already sent that message.

I saved a few keystrokes per Senator with this version of the handles and message: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1paf45p00YWTCFQ7wYmGq4xrc0xAyqVeutoVa1MXWGMc/edit?usp=sharing
Column F has the message as text with the handle added.

I think it would take me longer to add all the senators to a post in the action tracker.  Action tracker could use a note field.

Cheers, Bob

Hi everyone,

Just a little tip if anyone is still considering sending out these tweets. It is not best practice to start a tweet with an @ symbol in cases like these. You want to have at least one character before a @. Twitter convention is to put a period before starting a tweet with an @. What I would recommend is to use the text as provided, just add a period at the beginning. So this would be you updated sample tweet:

Suggested Tweet:
.[Twitter handle], please put a #PriceOnCarbon in the #BuildBackBetter Bill. Make polluters pay for their pollution. We can't get to greenhouse reductions of 50% by 2030 without it, as analyses such as https://rhg.com/research/us-climate-policy-2030/ show. Millions of Americans want this.

The reason behind this is the difference in the twitter algorithm between replies and mentions, which you can read about here. The chart below also compares the difference between the two.

If you already sent out your tweets and started with an @, don't worry at all. Your message will still get to the most important intended recipient, which is the senator. You will just have slightly less visibility amongst your own followers.

I did send this feedback to the person who created the spreadsheet, but he has not updated it yet.

Happy tweeting! I'm going to go send mine now!

Many Thanks for that knowledge!  I've updated: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1paf45p00YWTCFQ7wYmGq4xrc0xAyqVeutoVa1MXWGMc/edit?usp=sharing -- Column F is the message as text.

Oh goodness, duly noted on best Twitter tactics for full visibility.  All tweets have been re-tweeted appropriately to all Senators!

Thanks all,
Nancy
