Throughout the K-12 system professionals are being asked to use more nonfiction materials with students, including magazines, databases, YouTube, websites, and primary sources. Yet for many, nonfiction is associated with boring text books, dry memorization, or stamped-out series. 

What are the real pleasures of nonfiction? How is nonfiction changing? What are the borderlines between “narrative nonfiction” and invention?

Basic Rights Oregon seeks an energetic candidate to serve as Communications Fellow as part of our Communications team beginning in January 2015 through June 2015. This fellowship is an entry-level internship, which will be supported by the Communications Staff.

The Communications Fellow will help produce social media content, organize content (written and video), copy edit blog posts, newsletter articles and other duties as assigned.

position summary:

Bridger SUN School is seeking volunteers to teach fun, themed learning classes with links to reading, writing, math, science...etc. Bridger is a K-8 school located in East Portland with a Spanish immersion program. It is a highly diverse, energetic, multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment. After school time runs from 3:15-5:15pm Monday-Thursday, from January 26th to March 12th (7 weeks). The first hour, from 3:30-4:15 is homework help time, and the second hour is an enrichment class. Each of our classes is offered twice a week, either M/W or T/TH. Ideally, teachers can come beginning at 3:15. If you are only able to volunteer for either the enrichment class or the homework time, that is welcome as well!

The ultimate goal of this position is to implement the RR program model to ensure that every student served accelerates their reading proficiency by a minimum of 1.5 years. While every student will achieve reading proficiency at different rates, a minimum of 1.5 years of reading growth in one academic year is our standard goal.
Reading Results Program Site Managers will be responsible for attaining this level of achievement by:
▪ Coaching, supervising and evaluating tutors in delivering the Reading Results program with fidelity.
▪ Coordinating enrollment of targeted selection of ‘strategic’ students in collaboration with school liaison.

Salary / Pay Rate: $8,955 – $13,834 annually (part-time)

Nonprofit Home Inspections is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to empowering individuals to make safe, financially sound, and environmentally friendly housing decisions.

NHI's Inspectors are all Oregon Certified Home Inspectors and licensed general contractors.

In December, we are offering 5 free home inspections for low-income or underserved families who are planning on purchasing a home in the near future.
