Curiosity Books: Dinner and Nonfiction workshop with Marc Aronson

Throughout the K-12 system professionals are being asked to use more nonfiction materials with students, including magazines, databases, YouTube, websites, and primary sources. Yet for many, nonfiction is associated with boring text books, dry memorization, or stamped-out series.

What are the real pleasures of nonfiction? How is nonfiction changing? What are the borderlines between “narrative nonfiction” and invention?

With an eye to the concerns of educators, students, parents, and community members, Dr. Marc Aronson will share his passion for nonfiction and provide insights into selecting and using distinguished nonfiction resources.

Date: Friday, December 12, 2014

Counseling Clients Experiencing Grief and Loss: A Fresh Perspective

Grief and loss are common therapeutic themes though not always identified as such, particularly when non-death related. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and her five stages were long held up as the standard model for working through grief and loss even though her research was with dying individuals. Fortunately, one-size-fits-all models are no longer the standard.

In this workshop, we will discuss new ways to describe the impact of grief on our clients, including discussions on resilience and posttraumatic growth. Our focus will also be on the importance of tailoring our interventions to the individual, including a consideration of differing grieving styles.
