The Edgewood Weed Warriors operate under a permit issued to the Friends of Edgewood. They meet regularly to remove invasive plants at Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve, thereby allowing for greater biodiversity, natural habitats, and those beautiful wildflower displays that everyone enjoys.

The Weed Warriors normally meet at 9:00 AM on Friday throughout the year and on Wednesday afternoons during daylight savings time. Special sessions may be added with notice given at the beginning of the month.

Notice of the meeting location and time for each session is sent to the Weed Warrior email group each week - do not go to the park and expect to find the weeding group if you are not on the email list. If you wish to be added to the Weed Warriors email, contact the Weed Warrior program coordinator, Paul Heiple, at weed-warriors-coord @ friendsofedgewood.org. New weeders must fill out forms before they come out. Contact vc @ friendsofedgewood.org for the form to fill out.

[5] Fountain Thistle Work Party
Saturday May 25, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Lessingia Court in San Mateo
https://www.meetup.com/california-native-plant-society-santa-clara-valley-chapter/events/300940779/

Join Ken Himes and Don Thomas of the Santa Clara Valley Chapter and members of the Yerba Buena Chapter for our spring fountain thistle habitat restoration work party near the intersection of I-280 and Hwy. 92.

Fountain thistle (Cirsium fontinale var. fontinale) is a federally endangered plant species that grows in an unusual specialized habitat, serpentine seeps, and is only found here and in few other nearby locations on the Peninsula.

Its recovery here is a restoration success story. Once almost completely displaced by jubata grass, it has largely recovered here, as a result of the work done by CNPS volunteers in a cooperative project of the Santa Clara Valley and Yerba Buena Chapters. However, fountain thistle is still under threat from other non-native plants, such as yellow star-thistle, fennel and wallaby grass (Rhytidosperma caespitosum) and by woody plants trying to convert the area to shrubland or woodland. Also, another rare plant, Lessingia arachnoidea, which grows only here and in the nearby Crystal Springs Watershed, is threatened by invasion of yellow starthistle.

Sturdy gloves are recommended; you might also want to bring sunscreen, water, a hat, layered clothing and wear long sleeves/pants. Tools will be provided.

Directions: We meet at the end of Lessingia Court in San Mateo. If you can’t locate it, contact Don at donethomasd @ gmail.com.

[6] Vernal Pool Wildflower Tours in Fremont (CNPS members only)

The wet winter this year is promising a spectacular display of calico flowers (Downingia pulchella). Come and experience the beauty of this flower and its allies. Treat your senses with a mini super bloom!

If you are interested in joining a tour, please contact Aidona Kakouros at aidona_kakouros @ fws.gov to register. [7] Insect & Plant Identification Walk
Sunday May 26, 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM
Location: Woods Trail, Sierra Azul OSP
https://www.meetup.com/california-native-plant-society-santa-clara-valley-chapter/events/300999217/

Plants and insects are at the very bottom of the food chain – all higher forms of life depend on them for survival. An intact native plant habitat supports a diverse insect population, which in turn feeds amphibians, reptiles, birds, small mammals and other animals. Learn to identify the common native plants and insects of our area with California naturalists Karan Gathani and Arvind Kumar on a guided walk through Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve, the largest and southernmost preserve in the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.

We will hike the Woods Trail with spectacular views of Mt Hamilton, Mt Umunhum, and the valley floor. Expect to see coast live oak, madrone, California bay, bigleaf maple, buckeye, bigberry manzanita, toyon, coffeeberry, cream bush, chamise, mountain mahogany, and sticky monkeyflower. We may encounter butterflies, bees, beetles, grasshoppers, flies, spiders, and ants.

The elevation gain is 600 ft; the distance covered is 5.4 miles round trip.

All interested in plant and insect identification are welcome; prior knowledge of botany or entomology is helpful but not required.

Wear good walking/hiking shoes. Bring a sack lunch and plenty of fluids. Drinking water is not available in the preserve. We also suggest bringing a hat, sunscreen; and optionally, a hand lens and smartphone camera. We expect to return to the parking lot by 1:30 pm.

Space is limited. No drop-ins please.

[8] Native Plant ID
Tuesday May 28, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Location: Peninsula Conservation Center (first floor), 3921 E. Bayshore Road, Palo Alto
https://www.meetup.com/california-native-plant-society-santa-clara-valley-chapter/events/299137116/

Native Plant ID (formerly Keying with Natives) is a Chapter group that works together to learn plant identification using botanical keys and other resources. Join us as we look at plant samples collected from local gardens and practice methods of identifying the native plants of our region. Bring in plant samples if you have some from property where you have permission to collect or just come and work with the materials provided. We use the current edition of The Jepson Manual as well as other plant guides, and we have copies to share. If you have them, bring your own favorite guide and a hand lens. Microscopes will also be available.

The group meets at 7:00 PM on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Location: Raptor Suite, Peninsula Conservation Center (PCC), 3921 E. Bayshore Road in Palo Alto. For more information please contact Janet Hoffmann at janet @ cnps-scv.org.

Directions to the PCC: From Hwy. 101 take the San Antonio Rd. exit and head north. Take the next left onto East Bayshore, which will curve left then right. Take the next right onto Corporation Way. The entrance to the PCC parking lot is the first driveway on the left. The conference rooms are on the first floor.

Here are some events from other chapters and organizations:

[9] Butterflies of Sierra Azul - by Midpen
Friday May 24, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Location: Sierra Azul Preserve
https://www.openspace.org/events/guided-activities/butterflies-sierra-azul-1

Docent Naturalists Jan Hintermeister, Vivian Neou and Sarah Schoen will be your traveling companions on this leisurely-paced hike through varied habitats of the Bald Mountain and Mt. Umunhum trails. Starting from the Bald Mountain Parking Area we'll hike the Bald Mountain and lower Mt. Umunhum trails. Then we'll carpool/caravan to the Mt. Umunhum summit for further exploration. Although the focus is on butterflies, you'll see many plant and animal species on the shoulders and summit of Mt. Umunhum. Bring a lunch for a short break, and binoculars if you have them.

[10] Volunteer Outdoors at Cooley Landing - by Grassroots Ecology
Saturday May 25, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Cooley Landing 2100 Bay Road, East Palo Alto
https://www.grassrootsecology.org/event-calendar/2024/5/25/volunteer-outdoors-at-cooley-landing-dkwee-xpzff-2pgld-93y4g

Join us at Cooley Landing for a morning of habitat restoration, no prior experience required! The plan of the day is to weed in the restoration sites and prepare to sheet mulch next year's planting area to help with weed suppression. In order to sheet mulch, we need a large quantity of cardboard to cover the area.

If you have large pieces of cardboard (anything bigger than 2x2ft, with minimal printing and with no glossy coating), please bring it with you on Saturday. We will be removing tape and staples from the cardboard during the workday but if possible remove them from any cardboard you bring, it would be great help!
