[3] Chapter Restoration Activities

(a) Habitat Restoration at Alum Rock Park
Wednesday, May 13 and Monday, May 18, both at 8:30 am
Location: Alum Rock Park, San Jose (meeting spot varies; email contact provided on page)
Come help us weed non-native, invasive plants at this natural gem of San Jose. Our habitat restoration efforts allow the native plants to “come to light.” Forms and reservations are required to volunteer. For the Monday/Wednesday workdays, the meeting spot varies, so please contact Todd Hayes at ultra...@gmail.com for more information and instructions on where to park.

(b) Edgewood Restoration
Wednesday May 13, 5:30 pm
Friday May 15, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Location: Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve (Redwood City)
Help restore habitat at Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve, known for fabulous wildflowers and amazing diversity. Weeders see far more than weeds: we get to be up close to the native plants, some of which are seen only by weeders. To participate, join the email list and sign the electronic volunteer agreement, by sending an email to weed-warr...@friendsofedgewood.org.

(c) Habitat Restoration at Cataldi Park
Saturday, May 16, 9:00 am – 11:00 am
Location: Cataldi Park — 1797 Bethany Ave, San Jose
Join us to restore habitat in Cataldi Park, San Jose. We are planting and maintaining native plants in a 1/2-acre area of the park off Bethany Ave. Activities include planting, pruning, sheet mulching, irrigation setup, and general maintenance. Spring is the time for controlling weeds and taking care of the young saplings.

[4] Other Chapters & Organizations

(a) Rare Gems and Old Friends Nature Walk in Los Gatos at Cherry Springs Pond (Grassroots Ecology)
Saturday, May 16, 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Location: Cherry Springs Pond, 18199 Pheasant Road Los Gatos, CA, 95032
Join us at the Cherry Springs Pond Area of Sierra Azul, a Midpeninsula Regional Open Space Preserve, to explore the unique biodiversity of an area of Sierra Azul that is not open to the public! Participants can expect to walk at a slow, "naturalist" pace through an exposed and hilly terrain with moderately steep climbs for up to 3 miles. We will explore the ecosystem of Cherry Springs with a special focus on the less common plants present in the preserve!Important: the gate to the private road entering the preserve will be opened 5 minutes before the start time of the event and will be closed at 3:15. See the link above for the driving instructions.

(b) Botanical Beauties (Midpen)
Friday, May 15, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm
Location: Sierra Azul Preserve. Meet at the Jacques Ridge Parking Area near the intersection of Hicks Road and Mt. Umunhum Road in San Jose.
Search for unique plants that thrive in rocky areas of this huge and diverse preserve with Docent Naturalists Nick Yatsko and Nancy Weintraub. Will you see succulents in bloom among the herbaceous wildflowers? This moderately paced, out-and-back route following the Woods Trail will offer a bevy of botanical opportunities as well as expansive views toward the South Bay.

(c) WWW: Wildflowers, Wandering & Wine (Midpen)
Saturday, May 16, 10:00 am - 1:30 pm
Location: Picchetti Ranch Preserve. Meet at the preserve parking lot on Montebello Road.
It’s springtime! Join Docent Naturalists Martin Manley, Dave Kocsis, and Linda Smith to check out the wildflowers that were nourished by the winter rains. On this moderately-paced hike along the Zinfandel and Orchard Loop trails, you’ll observe several different plant communities that are found in this relatively small preserve and see what creatures might be living in the pond. Bring a lunch to enjoy at the picnic tables by Stevens Creek. At the end you’ll have the option for a little wine tasting at the Picchetti Winery on your own.
