(a) Native Plant ID - Spring Wildflowers

Location: Peninsula Conservation Center, 3921 E Bayshore Rd · Palo Alto
In March and April we expect an abundance of spring wildflowers to look at. Bring in samples of flowers that you would like to identify if you have permission to collect them. If you see some flowers on hikes on public lands, take photos. For identification purposes we need a close-up photo or photos showing all the flower parts as well as photos of the leaves and a whole plant photo to show the growth form. Send your photos to the email below no later than the Sunday before the meeting..

First Day of Spring Bird and Plant ID Walk at Lake Cunningham Park (San Jose)

Location: Lake Cunningham Regional Park, 2305 S White Rd · San Jose, CA
With the onset of Spring, join us for a beginner’s bird and plant identification walk through Lake Cunningham Park. This lake is a major destination for waterfowl and migratory birds and its Native Garden draws many birds due to its habitat value. On this walk, Vicki Silvas-Young will show you how to identify the common birds of this area, while Arvind Kumar will identify the native plants that they depend on for food and shelter.The distance is 2 miles round-trip on a level path. Bring a hat, water, your bird and plant lists, and binoculars. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Parking fee is $6, credit card only.RSVP is required to join us for the walk. Space is limited. No drop-ins, please.

(a) Volunteer at a Museum Garden: Plant Native Santa Clara Valley Species

Help plant locally native Santa Clara Valley species to support pollinators, biodiversity, and living history at this historic site. Volunteers will learn about gardening with native plants, ethnobotany, keystone species, and practical ways to foster ecological resilience. The session begins with a garden tour, followed by a planting demonstration and hands‑on work in small groups. We’ll break for sandwiches midway through and conclude with an optional tour of the historic museum that spans sovereign Indigenous American, Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. eras, which is certified as an Interpretive Site of the Anza Trail and included in the Passport 2 History program.Please email Julisa Soto at

(b) Help preparing 2026 Growing Natives Garden Tour

Before the annual Growing Natives Garden Tour, the committee gathers to prepare bags of supplies, including our custom T-shirts, for each garden. It is a fun social event as well as a work session. If you are curious about how we put a tour of over 50 gardens, this is a great opportunity. Meet the committee and help us keep the tour running smoothly. The packing party will be at Madeline Morrow's home close to the Saratoga Ave. exit off 85. No knowlege of plants is needed.

(a) Habitat Restoration at Alum Rock Park
Wednesday, Mar 18 and Monday, Mar 23, both at 8:30 am
Location: Alum Rock Park, San Jose (meeting spot varies; email contact provided on page)
Come help us weed non-native, invasive plants at this natural gem of San Jose. Our habitat restoration efforts allow the native plants to “come to light.” Forms and reservations are required to volunteer. For the Monday/Wednesday workdays, the meeting spot varies, so please contact Todd Hayes at

(b) Edgewood Restoration

Help restore habitat at Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve, known for fabulous wildflowers and amazing diversity. Weeders see far more than weeds: we get to be up close to the native plants, some of which are seen only by weeders. (c) Habitat Restoration at Cataldi Park

Location: Cataldi Park — 1797 Bethany Ave, San Jose
Join us to restore habitat in Cataldi Park, San Jose, to prepare it for the 2026 Growing Natives Garden Tour. We are planting and maintaining native plants in a 1/2-acre area of the park off Bethany Ave. Activities include planting, pruning, sheet mulching, irrigation setup, and general maintenance.
(d) Habitat Restoration at Cunningham Park

Location: Native Garden Parking Lot, Lake Cunningham — 2305 S. White Road, San Jose
Join us to restore habitat (weeding and mulching) in the Native Garden at Lake Cunningham Park. During the winter months, we plant, water, weed, and mulch. See the Meetup link for detailed information about the location.
(e) Community Work Day at the Native Plant Garden in Kirk Park
Saturday, Mar 21, 9:00 am – 11:00 am
Location: Briarwood Drive & Wawona Drive, San Jose
Volunteers meet at the garden on Saturdays from 9 am to 11 am, weather permitting, for weeding, watering and other maintenance activities. Occasionally there will be other tasks such as mulching and planting. Community volunteers, including families with children over 6, are always welcome!
