Dear friends,
Check out our chapter's upcoming events:

[1] Edgewood Restoration
Friday, December 15, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
https://www.cnps-scv.org/events/calendar/eventdetail/3277/-/friday-edgewood-restoration

Contact Friday leader Paul Heiple at weed-warriors-coord @ friendsofedgewood.org

The Edgewood Weed Warriors operate under a permit issued to the Friends of Edgewood. They meet regularly to remove invasive plants at Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve, thereby allowing for greater biodiversity, natural habitats, and those beautiful wildflower displays that everyone enjoys.

The Weed Warriors normally meet at 9:00 AM on Friday throughout the year and on Wednesday afternoons during daylight savings time. Special sessions may be added with notice given at the beginning of the month.

Notice of the meeting location and time for each session is sent to the Weed Warrior email group each week - do not go to the park and expect to find the weeding group if you are not on the email list. If you wish to be added to the Weed Warriors email, contact the Weed Warrior program coordinator, Paul Heiple, at weed-warriors-coord @ friendsofedgewood.org.

New weeders must fill out forms before they come out. Contact vc @ friendsofedgewood.org for the form to fill out.

Sturdy gloves are recommended; you might also want to bring sunscreen, water, a hat, layered clothing and wear long sleeves/pants. Location varies - join the email group to receive weekly notices.

[3] 1st Day of Winter Bird+Plant ID Walk
Saturday, December 16, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Lake Cunningham Park, San Jose
https://www.meetup.com/california-native-plant-society-santa-clara-valley-chapter/events/296922026/

At the onset of Winter, join us for a beginner’s bird and plant identification walk through Lake Cunningham Park. This lake is a major destination for waterfowl and migratory birds and its native garden draws many birds due to its habitat value. On this walk, Vicki Silvas-Young will show you how to identify the common birds of our area, while Arvind Kumar will identify the native plants that they depend on for food and shelter.

The distance is 2 miles round-trip on a level path. Bring a hat, water, your bird and plant lists, and binoculars. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Directions: Meet at the Marina parking lot at 9am. The Marina parking lot is on the western shore of the lake, next to Raging Waters, at the opposite side of the park from the main entrance on White Road. Parking fee is $6. In Google Maps, search for “Lake Cunningham Marina” (37.3353176 -121.8120059) to be directed to the Marina.

RSVP is required to join us for the walk. Space is limited. No drop-ins please.

Co-sponsored by CNPS, Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, and Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority

[5] Habitat Restoration: French Broom Removal - by Midpen
Thursday, December 14, 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM

[6] Distribution and Ecology of Vernal Pools
Thursday, December 14, 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM
https://www.cnps.org/event/distribution-and-ecology-of-vernal-pools

Kaleidoscopes were a favorite holiday gift for children many years ago. They displayed a quickly and constantly changing series of brilliantly colored patterns. The metaphor works for California’s vernal pool landscapes.

Carol Witham will help us to explore the short-lived, weird-looking, fascinating fauna that evolved millions of years ago, and dazzling swaths of tens of thousands of tiny flowers that change from week to week through a two- to- three month "season".

This tour of California vernal pools will answer questions such as "what makes a vernal pool" and “why are they found almost nowhere but California” plus explore vernal pools from throughout the state.

[7] What's in a Name? Woods Trail Trees - by Midpen
Saturday, December 16, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Sierra Azul Preserve
https://www.openspace.org/events/guided-activities/whats-name-woods-trail-trees

Binomial nomenclature anyone? Join Docent Naturalists Frances Reneau and Helena Cohen for a deep dive into the fascinating world of plant names. Our focus on this leisurely-paced hike will be on the trees lining the Woods Trail on our way to Guadalupe Creek and back. Who decided to bestow the names Torreya californica and Pseudotsuga californica instead of simply calling them California nutmeg and Douglas fir, and why?

[8] Jingle Bell Rock This Cleanup! - by Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful

This moderately-paced hike will traverse grassland, mixed evergreen forest, riparian, and Douglas-fir forest habitats on the Stevens Creek Nature Trail, Skid Road Trail, and White Oak Trail. You'll observe how water availability is impacting the flora, fauna, and habitat. Will you see a newt? Will there be water in the creek? Come find out! Bring a snack. Must be comfortable climbing a 400-foot elevation gain.
