Dear friends,
Happy New Year everyone! Check out our chapter's upcoming events:

[1] Chapter Meetings

(a) Conservation Committee Meeting
Monday, Jan 5, 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm
This committee covers many issues affecting native plants: conservation, advocacy, legislation, habitat restoration and rare plants. Meetings are open to all interested members; to receive the Zoom link, contact Committee Chair Carolyn Dorsch via the contact information provided at the page above.

(b) New Year’s Walk
Thursday Jan 1, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Location: North Whitehouse Creek Trailhead, Año Nuevo State Park
RSVP is required via the meetup link

Join leader Vicki Silvas-Young as we celebrate a Chapter tradition of welcoming the New Year with a walk to and BYO picnic at Franklin Point, which is part of the Año Nuevo State Park on the San Mateo County coast.

We will be exploring our surroundings as we casually walk towards Franklin Point, which is the most botanically interesting area of the park. We will be starting from the North Whitehouse Creek Trailhead which is located south of Pescadero on Highway 1, just north of the Santa Cruz County line. We’ll enjoy ocean views, California native plants and raptors, song birds and maybe marine mammals.
[2] Looking for a Hospitality Chair
CNPS SCV is a volunteer-run organization. Please consider if you have time to keep events running smoothly by filling this vital role.

Hospitality Chair
If you have organized food for large gatherings before, then you already have what it takes to be hospitality chair! The Hospitality Chair oversees food and beverage arrangements at chapter events including the Wildflower Show in April, the Fall Plant Sale in October and the potluck in November. There may be other smaller events throughout the year, like the mailing party that's usually held in April.

Your main tasks include shopping for food and drinks, and directing other chapter volunteers with set up before events and clean up afterwards.

If you are interested, please email Janet Hoffman (ja...@cnps-scv.org) or Toni Gregorio-Bunch (tidyt...@gmail.com).
[3] Chapter Restoration Activities
RSVP is required for all Chapter restoration activities, along with signed waiver forms. Please see the individual listings for details.

(a) Habitat Restoration at Alum Rock Park
Monday, Jan 5, 8:30 am
Location: Alum Rock Park, San Jose (meeting spot varies; email contact provided on page)
Come help us weed non-native, invasive plants at this natural gem of San Jose. Our habitat restoration efforts allow the native plants to “come to light.” Forms and reservations are required to volunteer. For the Monday/Wednesday workdays, the meeting spot varies, so please contact Todd Hayes at ultra...@gmail.com for more information and instructions on where to park.

(b) Friday Edgewood Restoration
Friday Jan 2, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Location: Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve, Redwood City
Help restore habitat at Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve, known for fabulous wildflowers and amazing diversity. Weeders see far more than weeds: we get to be up close to the native plants, some of which are seen only by weeders. To participate, join the email list and sign the electronic volunteer agreement, by sending an email to weed-warr...@friendsofedgewood.org.

(c) Habitat Restoration at Cataldi Park
Saturday Jan 3, 9:00 am – 11:00 am
Location: Cataldi Park — 1797 Bethany Ave, San Jose
Join us to restore habitat in Cataldi Park, San Jose. We are planting and maintaining native plants in a 1/2-acre section of the park off Bethany Ave. We have planted more than 200 native plants over the last couple of years. Activities depend on the season. We start planting in late fall after the first rain and continue into the winter months as needed.

[4] Other Chapters & Organizations

(a) Experience the King Tides - Midpen
Friday Jan 2, 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
Location: Ravenswood Preserve, East Palo Alto
Ring in the new year with the King Tides! Join Docent Naturalists Melissa Hero and Bobbie Riedel on this leisurely-paced hike on the Bay Trail to learn about what causes these exceptionally high tides. You’ll also get a better understanding of how they may affect the species that live in the marsh and how active restoration of wetlands, one of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet, helps combat sea level rise.

(b) In Search of Manzanitas - Midpen
Sunday Jan 4, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm
Location: El Corte de Madera Creek Preserve, Redwood City
Join Docent Naturalists Nancy Weintraub, Laura Knott-Thomas, Marie Faust Evitt, and Helena Cohen on this moderately-paced hike in the shade of redwoods, madrones, bay laurels, and firs to search for several manzanita species. You’ll learn about the importance of this local, keystone species, both past and present, as well as hike along the Tafoni Trail to observe the otherworldly geology of the tafoni sandstone formation. A small detour will take you to a scenic overlook with views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Cruz Mountains before returning to the parking area via the Tafoni Trail.

(c) Faults, Fungi & Flora - Midpen
Sunday Jan 4, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
Location: Windy Hill Preserve, Portola Valley
Enjoy a leisurely-paced nature hike with Docent Naturalists John Seyfarth, Naureen Moon, and Katie Wilson through the lower Portola Valley trails of this popular preserve. You'll hike along the path of the famous San Andreas fault, learn a little local geology, and explore the flora and fauna around the sag pond. With luck and a good winter rainy season, you'll see some impressive fungi—for fun and photography, not foraging!—along the way.
