Posted: 13 Mar 2008 07:40 PM CDT 最近最热点的话题是股市,就连我那从来不关心的老爸都打电话时打听道:股市怎么样?真的象媒体说的那么惨? 其实很多人以前都不关注股票,现在关心不是因为股市如何,而是透过表面看本质。大家实际最关心的是中国经济,涉及面包含所有行业,所有参加工作的成年人都会受到影响。人们的生活标准在悄悄改变。 早上吃早点的时候才发现包子已经20块一斤。吃早点的人说:“日子没法过了……”郭德刚说得好:没法过,死去呀! 时尚地话是说:寒冬已经结束,春天还远吗?
不管远不远,我是感冒了。

Frayed Knights - When One Door Closes... Posted: 14 Mar 2008 10:38 AM CDT For once, I'm going to try to be... well, less verbose in this week's design diary for Frayed Knights, the comedy-based indie RPG.
The big task this week was to get the dungeon re-entrant, and to get save games and load games working. That's right, we're in alpha, and saves and loads aren't working. I was actually considering leaving them out for the pilot (after all, it's relatively short), but the cry of horror from my alpha testers convinced me of the error of my ways. ![]() The cool flip side of this exercise is that its also helping me track everything that needs to be stored in the saved game. I'd tried to keep some of that data separated out in the past, even creating some incomplete data-saving functions for things like the game state flags that track events in the game. So I hadn't been completely neglecting this area. Unfortunately, just as progress was being made and the problem looked *barely* solvable by Friday (which I've set up as "alpha day" for the testing group), the ol' Day Job came through with a mandate for massive overtime this week... twelve hours a day, Saturday included. It's on a short time-frame, fortunately, but to say it impacted my Frayed Knights development schedule is an understatement. With luck, I may be able to get Alpha 3 out (for those involved in alpha testing, especially those still waiting to get involved) on Wednesday or Thursday, and then Alpha 4 may go out on Monday or Tuesday of the following week. That will probably be the final alpha. Due to requirements of the competition I'm participating in, the release date for the Frayed Knights Pilot is still going to be April 1st (if not the day before). It may still be a little "beta" (or a lot "beta"), but that's kind of the point. I have been getting a ton of great feedback from testers so far, and this has really helped me figure out some overall changes that may need to be made to the full release. I’m having a really hard time watching myself being interviewed. Part of it is, that I always have the hardest time watching video footage of me and the other part of it is it’s really laggish and it loads for ever.

Whilst currently more a tech demo than a game, it looks very interesting and strangely reminiscent of an old Mac or Amiga game that I just can't remember, although of course with much better graphics. It's written in Python with Soya3D, and could be the type of game to make me eat previous words about Python not being suitable for non-trivial projects. Less talking, more youtube: Anybody remember that old Mac (or Amiga) game that looks similar to this? Powerball (Ogre Showcase) is an, "arcade game where you have the roll a ball into the target. Sounds simple? Yeah, now the cool facts: Items like beamers, Coins, switches, you can control it by holding a Chessboard at the bottom of your Webcam (even in Linux)." That last bit about a chessboard/webcam combo sounds great. The only non-cool bit about the project is that the media content is not under a Free license and hence not hosted on SF. Hopefully that'll change in the future. FreeTrain is getting somewhere now. The author of SdlDotNet and Tao.SDL has taken up work on the project and is kicking ass. FreeTrain coming to a Linux/Mono platform near you Real Soon (tm)! Update 1: Too early in the morning... had to publish this 5 times! No title, spelling errors, layout problems. Posted: 14 Mar 2008 04:31 AM CDT 陪中国网游走过了8个年头,和大部分玩家一样,从刚开始的《千年》菜鸟,到现在的自认为是资深玩家,相信大多数 朋友都经历了网游里的快乐,痛苦,懊恼,回忆。直到想在我们还在享受着这份很多人不理解的快乐。可是,当我清晨从哪张很不舒服的椅子上醒来时,偶然发现电 脑桌上的烟灰缸里的半身战士,喝完的雪碧瓶借助着清晨的阳光也对我们哈哈大笑。这才发现,我们这些年吸的烟能够装上一卡车,饮料瓶卖了都够买一把当年的 “屠龙刀”,吃剩的盒饭够养猪场一年之用。而我们对此却津津乐道。仅因为对网游的热爱,对网游的支持,我们付出着,而换来的是什么?是网游厂商的粗糙乱 造,是网游厂商的大斯敛财,是网游厂商的不负责,是公侧网游比服务器开的还快的垃圾之作。即使是这样,玩家们依然是前扑后继,80后,90后,2000 后,正走在我们的轮回中。还造成了现在青少年因迷恋于网游,犯罪率不段的上升,对此社会中对网游,网吧的打杀声越来越高,对我们这些深爱着网游的人越来越 来不理解。
经上述分析得出结论:中国网游需要职业玩家,而这种职业玩家则不是代练,猛冲级,游戏中打钱,赚取的哪一点点辛苦钱,这对网游玩家太不公平了,对游戏厂商 也是不公平的,你破坏了人家的游戏寿命。中国网游需要的是,对网游玩家能起到引导作用,引导大家能够正确游戏,游戏之外的快乐大于游戏之中的职业玩家,必 境游戏只是娱乐,不要让游戏给我们娱乐了,其实网游玩家是很单调的,他们没有更多苛刻的要求。只想在游戏之于看到更多的网游故事,网游心情等等。分享游戏 里的,悲 欢 离 合 这点现在就有作的很好的人,例如,苍天哥,教授。也许他们将来会成为职业玩家,且有稳定的收入。
网游厂商也需要职业玩家。其实网游厂商也想作出好的游戏,必境这个行业的网络神话太多了,然而面对中国几千万的网游玩家,面对五花八门的各样游戏,面对网 游行业的人才仅缺,他们貌似不知中国完家需要什么,这就需要一些有着丰富网游经验,且活动在玩家中间的我们对其提出建议,告诉他网游完家需要什么,必境网 游是作给玩家的,听取大部分玩家意见作出的游戏,不能说是好游戏,但可以说是我们要的,是中国玩家需要的。例如,我们可以对游戏背景提出建议,职业的设计 提出建议,公会的设计提出建议,任务,副本,PK,装备等等。希望中国以后的网游寿命是十年以上,中国以后的网游是一种文化,中国以后的网游是个娱乐场 所。
说了这么多,还是因为中国有太多的人热爱着网游,有太多的网游厂商想作好网游,只出于对这二点的考虑,中国是不是可以诞生一批,可以引导玩家正确游戏,引导网游厂商开发出更多适合中国玩家的游戏的职业玩家!

ChattyDM always has great posts, and yesterday he lived up to expectations with his discussion about 4th Edition (which he’s been trying to avoid, but it calls to us all sooner or later…). Also on Tuesday, Mike Mearls posted one of the best D&D supplemental charts I’ve ever seen on his livejournal. It involves what a Kobold might do if it actually manages to defeat an adventurer.

Posted: 15 Mar 2008 05:02 AM CDT 相比可耻的盗号贼,卖了帐号又找回的人是否已经超越了可耻的境界,达到了可恨的程度? 目前中国还没有出台任何关于虚拟物品的完善法令,而虚拟物品的交易却在玩家之间十分盛行,虚拟物品交易网站也是热闹非凡,但是这种毫无保障的的交易一旦发生纠纷,会是一个怎么样的景象呢?
3.15已经到来,大多数消费者都可以利用法律武器来捍卫自己的权益,而虚拟物品的消费者们,我们该拿什么捍卫自己的权益?
一:玩家之间的交易是否合法?
玩家之间的虚拟物品交易是否合法?很多人说虚拟物品不能算财产,它根本没有价值,通俗的说它根本不能拿来卖。但是玩家之间的交易是“你情我愿”的情况,就算虚拟财产“一文不值”,但是一个玩家是“愿意”送钱给另一个玩家花,那个玩家又恰好“愿意”送装备这位玩家,他们违法了吗?
再则违法,合法之说的前提是“有法可依”,而虚拟财产国家目前还没有出台完善的法令加以管理,根本“无法可依”,所以玩家之间的虚拟财产交易既不能说合法,也不能说违法。
二:发生纠纷时,会出现什么情况?
目前常见的纠纷类型是:
1:卖方通过出售虚拟物品,然后对代理方寻求帮助,声称自己帐号被盗,要求找回,而买方则交了钱,装备又回到了卖方手中,从而引起纠纷。
2:卖方通过有效证件验证,密保邮箱等手段找回自己的帐号密码等资料,从而导致买方交了钱,ID依然被卖方拿回,引起了纠纷。
在进行这类虚拟交易之时,一般情况下,双方都是口头或者网络联系,很少定立书面说明协议,而且交易过程十分零散,证据说服力不够,这导致发生纠纷时,几乎都是买方吃亏。
三:你卖号找回?我不会让你好过!
由于找回帐号密码的方法很多,有密码提示问题,有效证件等等,买方在获取一定帐号资料后,也可以频繁的找回帐号密码,这就出现了:卖方,买方互相争夺帐号,最终经常以“两败俱伤”收场。
注:很多玩家认为删人物删装备,还是可以找回的,但目前大多数代理一年只提供一次帐号恢复,并且要求用户有办理他们的相关密保服务,部分代理公司还要求用户出示公安机关的证明。
四:缺乏法律的约束,我们要如何维护自己的权益?
可以说,虚拟交易就目前中国的现状来说,没有任何的保障,就算最终通过法院来判决,由于法令的缺失,相关证据的有效性未知,你是否能讨回公道还是未知数。而且面对高额的律师费,漫长的判决过程,就算你真讨回了公道,是否值得?那个时候你是否认为,你只是为争一口气?

Posted: 15 Mar 2008 05:00 AM CDT 靠10美元起家,在”Second Life”上炒地皮房产,不到2年,华裔女教师安舍钟成为握有真金白银的百万富翁;在虚拟的读者见面会上,克里斯·安德森将其<长尾理论>向全球推销—-这就是神奇的虚拟世界,从2006年10月至2007年10月,全球共有10亿美元投向35个类似的公司,包括中国的HIPIHI。IBM、GOOGLE、华纳、迪斯尼等各路巨头已经争先恐后地走进了虚拟世界,在这个被誉为”远大于WEB”的新世界中,生态圈已然成形。
如今,他们开始讨论虚拟世界的互联互通,实现虚拟经济全球化。
”今年8月中旬,哈宝中国已结束运营。”10月17日,原速雷克中国区经理徐征向记者证实了哈宝中国已经关闭的消息。
芬兰速雷克(Sulake Corporation)旗下这款专门针对十余岁青少年的虚拟社区产品——”哈宝”(Habbo Hotel)是全球运营最为成功的2D图形社区之一,自2000年5月成立以来已在29个国家推出本地版本。
此前,据芬兰速雷克公关经理Juhani Lassila透露,哈宝于2006年初登陆中国,广州光通和天联世纪分别为其运营伙伴和市场推广伙伴,但各方都还未大展拳脚,哈宝在本土的服务已宣告关闭。
”除哈宝全球希望能把资源集中在优势市场的战略考虑,也与国内本土语境有关。”徐征认为,一个重要原因即国内用户尚缺乏创造习惯。
用户在虚拟环境中的创造力,无论对哈宝还是Second Life都是最有价值之处。而与哈宝更多强调基于社交的创造力不同,用户在Second Life这个3D大客户端图形虚拟社区中的创造行为可类比”创世纪”,一切全由用户凭空创造。
由Second Life所带来的商业机会使众多创业者和互联网巨头们看到了一个全新的金矿,但哈宝中国的夭折却引人疑惑,中国现实的网络语境能否承载起这样一个具有颠覆意义的革命?
网游巨头观望
由于具有类似的3D环境和共通的虚拟游戏性,已具有庞大用户市场份额的网络游戏是最关注Second Life的一群互联网企业。
”我们对这个模式能否在中国取得成功保持密切关注。”盛大、网易等几乎所有的网游巨头都向记者表示将对Second Life观摩学习,不过”都还没有考虑过早做战略策划”,原因是中外网络语境的差异。
”因为创造,便有了价值,而这些价值又可以转化为现实的金钱。”网易负责网游的相关人士认为,Second Life的独特之处在玩家能创造属于自己的东西,做自己想做的事,但中国玩家从接触网游始便被动接受开发者创造出的事物和定下的规则。
”他们习惯PK环境和接受任务,从任务中获得基本生存技能和物质,当转移到一个不存在升级、打怪的空白环境中很难创造出新价值,也体验不到存在的价值,会觉得无所适从。”网易上述人士表示,想象力是制约Second Life在中国流行的原因,由于大部分国内网民还处接受信息阶段,缺乏天马行空的思维,能在这样自由的虚拟世界获得乐趣的仍为少数。
创造力之外,技术能力也是中国用户面临的问题。
”排除Second Life对硬件的要求,游戏中创造事务所需的技术能力是一种类似C语言的编写程序”。网易认为,就目前中国网民对技术的掌握和使用情况看,不仅仅是一个门槛,还是一个普及问题,需要一个学习的过程,”由此可见,目前这种模式的市场比现有的网游市场要小很多”。
再次,涉及社会秩序和产权保护意识。由于Second Life中有很多与现实生活挂钩的地方,同时也涉及了虚拟货币与真实货币的交换,而其中尚没有现实中的完善法规,更多是靠用户的自觉自制。
”这对用户的受教育程度、社会道德的认知就是一种无形要求。”网易上述人士表示,中国网游也已出现虚拟财产盗用问题,而一旦涉及真实财产和知识产权等问题即需要更严谨的制度规范,”这对模式和产品的设计也是一种制约”。
”虚拟社区一直是盛大看好的方向,但一切要等到时机成熟后,”盛大总裁唐骏在接受采访时同样表示,”就目前来说,盛大不会做Second Life模式的虚拟社区。”
如何引爆本土用户
据Second Life全球观察家和记录者Wagner James Au今年8月透露的数据:在目前Second Life的800万注册用户中,北美用户所占比重最大达45%,欧洲次之达到26%,中国大陆用户大概只有1%。
在网游巨头关注但不进入的情况下,不少本土草根创业者悄然承担起了Second Life式的虚拟世界在中国成长的使命。据记者了解,目前国内具有3D虚拟世界概念的已有Hipihi(海皮士)、Novoking(创想王国)和Uworld(由我世界)三家创业团队。
与Hipihi一样,创立于2005年底经过将近23个月开发的Novoking已于今年10月进入内测,Uworld则预定在2008年春内测。
然而,要想在中国语境下吸引Second Life式用户并不轻松,近期Uworld对Second Life中的中国用户行为做了调研和分析,其发现本土用户在Second Life中往往只处于四处游荡但并不知该做些什么。
这也证实了网游圈人士的一个主要考虑,即用户习惯——本土用户到底希望在虚拟社区中得到什么。
杭州天畅网络科技有限公司董事长郭羽此前向记者指出,对于Second Life提倡的”建设性”理念,结合目前国内玩家有偏好”破坏”的特征,最适合本土的虚拟社区可能是一种传统MMORPG(大型多人在线角色扮演游戏)的转型,”即传统MMORPG加上用户创造的模式,在网游产品设计上给用户更多自主权,而非以往的游戏开发商完全自行设定好游戏系统。”
”目前,国内网游主要是MMORPG,给用户一种虚拟的成就感,但实际上这并非是真正的自由.”有互联网业内人士分析道,”目前中国用户不告诉他要去做什么,就可能根本不知道要做什么,在人们的潜意识中,更愿意在游戏中用各自差异的成就感来实现价值,而对真正的自由和自主,大家并未习惯。”
此外,由于Second Life所要实现的不仅仅是创建类似<魔兽世界>一个游戏的”虚拟世界”,而是希冀用户来扩展”现实”。也就是说,试图依据现实世界的逻辑关系构建”虚拟世界”,Second Life试图尽力”仿真”,构建一个现实的延伸镜像。但研究Second Life会发现,这里已充斥黑手党、恐怖分子和发达的色情业、金融欺诈等。
市场营销机构Deep Focus首席执行官Ian Schafer曾说起他在Second Life中的一次最近经历——进入Aloft宾馆发现是空的,随后进入赌场、妓院和脱衣舞俱乐部,发现竟人满为患。Schafer研究的发现是:”在Second Life中需求最旺购买最频繁的就是生殖器。”
据TechCrunch近期报道,美国联邦调查局已计划对Second Life中的聚众赌博介入调查。
”由于Avatar(虚拟化身)的’天然’伪装功能和林登实验室的不干涉原则,使Second Life的’作伪’变得无限可能。”有业内人士认为,这就使Second Life模式落地中国会面临潜在的政策风险,同时也可能影响用户对有价值的体验失衡,而呈现为一种赌博、色情等极端化的表现形式。
此外,竞争激烈也将影响Second Life模式的中国落地。这主要体现在对已有虚拟社区体验的本土用户争夺上。
”本土已有相当用户聚集在高竞争的网游市场,而在线娱乐社区帝国腾讯也已集聚大量的青少年用户数。”上述分析人士认为,此外还有各种2D、3D环境下的”Web文字娱乐社区”、”Web文字+(FlashAS、SHOCKWAVE、RIA、Java)图形娱乐社区(可含WebGame)”、”微客户端IM+Web社区+微客户端Avatar”和”MMORPG+社区混合”等——因此,上述几家本土创业团队如何才能引爆本土用户,就成为一个现实而棘手的问题。
“3D+电子商务+SNS”的挑战
不过,Second Life的中国创业者们普遍认为,从长期看,其未来的庞大市场不是在争夺已有虚拟社区体验的那部分本土用户,而在引导和创造新的用户上。
”虚拟世界未来最重要的肯定是’3D+电子商务+SNS(社交网络)’的虚拟形态,这是互联网发展的趋势,包括可以看见自己的形象、进行虚拟物品买卖和人际关系的创造。”Hipihi的相关人士表示,网游用户只是整个互联网用户群的一部分,但正有越来越多的用户已不满足打打杀杀,想拥有自己的商业行为,”这是我们未来的成长空间”。
有网游观察人士认为,很多网游公司还未在此领域有所动作,原因是Second Life模式与其商业模式存在抵触关系——Second Life最大特色是可让玩家自行创造内容贩卖,而目前网游公司的收入主要来自用户买卖道具,前者这种全新的模式会使后者的商业模式受限。
国内草根创业者们还面临一个共同的关键问题——没有足够的内容,即没有足够具有创造力的内容提供者。
目前Second Life已有一定内容,如全球虚拟首富安舍钟(Anshe Chung)即是最大的内容提供商,又如为企业提供商业解决方案的”Millions of us”以及提供搜索和人工智能的”电子绵羊”(electric sheep company)等,而明年初,Second Life还即将推出宠物,但有观察人士指出,”由于林登实验室的不干涉原则,Second Life的社交网络交互性还比较匮乏,这也影响了Second Life的同时在线人数。”
”在以往互联网的初期发展中也曾面临内容问题,这些都需时间积累。”对此,草根创业者们对未来充满信心,除都表示会对Second Life模式的不足做充分反思和改进外,还会充分刺激国内具优秀创造力的用户提供内容,”同时,社区的文化价值和组织建设也要跟上。”
”中国用户富有创造力,但大多数人不是技术型,为适应本土用户,我们在设计产品中加入了更多的指南和使用范例来做引导,也会更多帮助他们开展社交及建立经济圈。”Uworld相关人士表示,”当他们有所作为时,我们会给他们成就感。”

Posted: 14 Mar 2008 04:02 PM CDT In the news today, a petition has been started on the Downing Street website (which I've signed) to basically ask the government to do something about the conditions that the UK industry has operated under in the last few years because times are difficult, and increasingly so. Though I support the idea, I think that it is basically doomed for the usual reasons:
1. The British public have a very negative view of games and wouldn't support it. 2. The British industry is not at all sure that they want it. 3. The other prevailing conditions in the UK (infrastructure, corporate tax rates, transport, location, standards of living, the crazy high value of the pound etc). The British industry's chief problem is that it's full of middle aged men who have fought their way into a fairly comfortable position, and have no real need to change the way that they do things. No offence intended to any of the middle aged men out there, many of whom I am good friends with, but it is not exactly a young industry at heart and a lot of them have become suburban types with families and saloon cars, and they tend to be quite oppositional in their viewpoints. This means that they see the industry as a big game of move and countermove, and to them the field is full of players that they already know. So for them the industry is largely a static place, so many of them don't support tax breaks on the basis that it means their enemy will get the upper hand. And to a certain degree, they are right. But it doesn't really address the wider issues of the industry, which are things like why is it about to go bust again (And it will, now that the dust has settled on the new hardware generation and the publishers will be counting the costs of having spent so much jockeying for position), why is all the work increasingly not coming to Britain, and what does it mean for the future of the industry as a whole? I'm sorry to say that the prospects are not good. Economic downturns are causing credit crunches, which means investment is drying up. Serious inaction on the part of the government means that places like Montreal, Shanghai and Mumbai are getting the upper hand in a variety of disciplines - all while still being cheaper than the UK industry. It's a global marketplace for skills, but the UK industry still behaves like a local one, and so does its government. So in that respect, is it basically over for the UK as a serious source of game development? What do you think? |

Posted: 16 Mar 2008 06:12 AM CDT 最近实在忍不住把CPU也换了,那天把扣肉带回家之后,兴奋之余就将其装在了七彩虹的945PL上,结果机器不能启动了。 后来才知道自己高兴过头了,自己的主板不支持扣肉。哎,又把主板也一起换了。一起花去了我1500块钱。 如今机器的运行效率确实有着质的飞跃,这次前来给我装机器的叔叔笑了,笑得比吃蜂蜜还甜,好吧,我知道你赚了,也不必笑得这么开心吧! 末了,那叔叔还说,你这电源太烂了,过两天来我这把机箱也换了吧?我无语ing…… 昨天装了crysis孤岛危机,进去玩了玩,效果只能开到中等,而且反锯齿一点都开不了,1x就会卡得掉渣。我想现在最好的显卡也难开全效吧。不过游戏效果确实不错,和传说中的相差无几。 如今C&C3的画面相比以前简直是天壤之别,但是却失去了曾经的色彩 话说如今游戏的画面的确是一步步高升啊,我“看”游戏“看”得都应接不暇了,几乎忘记了游戏的乐趣和操作,于是傻傻的我,当眼睛受不之时就退出了游戏。是我落伍了,还是现在的游戏真的不好玩了? 不过仔细观摩这些游戏时,又会发现不少设计元素在内,而且越来越细,这些游戏不是精品吗?未必,但是,为什么我就没有兴趣去玩呢? 是的,我怀念曾经的网吧?曾经的电脑室,还有那些街机室,我喜欢我在玩游戏时,有人看着我玩,我习惯在他们眼前炫耀我的操作、我的等级和我的乐趣,当然,我也愿意分享这种快乐。我希望未来,我的老婆可以陪我玩,这样比一个人玩要有趣的多,无论多好玩的游戏,如果没有人面对面陪你玩,真的很难玩下去…… 找个人陪你玩吧!无论玩什么,都会很开心! |

According to an interview at Gametrailers TV, Nintendo will have some big surprise coming at E3 in July. Well, yes, I know: Reggie sometimes gets a big FAIL when it comes to surprises. He promised one in th fall that turned out to be, well, either pretty much nothing or something we weren't that excited about. Yet IGN's Nintendo guru Matt Casamassina seems has been dropping hints all over the place. Any why doubt him? He's the guy with the proof of concept for Halo DS! In any case, here's five reasons why Kid Icarus is highly likely as a flagship Nintendo title for 2008/2009: 1. Every major Nintendo franchise will have been established on Wii by this time. Once Mario Kart drops in later this quarter, Nintendo will have had Mario (featured in no less than 5 major releases in Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Sonic And Mario at the Olympic Games, and Mario Party!!!), Zelda (Twilight Princess and Crossbow Training), and Metroid (Prime 3) all released on the system. In other words, the keg of Nintendo will have been tapped out. 2. Establishing new IP is hard. Kid Icarus gives you the advantage of "new" IP while keeping the edge of being a known commodity. 3. Kid Icarus lends itself to action adventure, a powerful genre in gaming today and one which the Wii is a little on the weak side. Twilight Princess notwithstanding, the Wii needs action adventure games badly. The PS3 in its short life already boasts Drake's Fortune (the coolest looking game for the system, IMO), Heavenly Sword, Lair, and Resistance, Fall of Man. Pit represent's Nintendo's chance to compete without overusing Zelda and being able to stay family friendly. 4. Kid Icarus has serious Wii Remote implementation potential. Flying, shooting arrows, and swordplay can all have a role with the hardware. Mario and Sonic proved that bow and arrow shooting can be done well and accurately on Wii, and that's a key element for a character that shoots arrows! 5. Nintendo's been building Pit's profile without starring him in any actual games. A big deal was made about Kid Icarus being in Brawl. It was one of the first big character reveals, and Pit is featured very prominently in Brawl's single player adventure mode, The Subspace Emissary. You just get a feeling that this is for a reason... The Randomly Reinforced Lost Garden Prototyping Awards Posted: 15 Mar 2008 07:21 PM CDT What a whirlwind of a month it has been. GDC was crazy fun, the latest beta of Expression Design came out at MIX, and I decided to take a leap and start in a new position at work. In the meantime, some great games were created in the last prototyping challenge.
![]() Let's reward awesome developers You know what? I think it is time for an award ceremony. I've been meaning to do this for a while, but never got around to it with the previous prototyping challenges. Here are the awards and how they are handed out:
You need to post a public, playable version in order to be eligible. I'll issue the rewards about one month after the initial challenge is posted. If something comes in after the original deadline has passed, I'll add it retroactively to the award post. If you win a Bronze or Silver, you can still come back later and make an attempt at the Gold. Anyone who gets a Gold medal is an automatic rock star in my book. What do you get if you win? First off, you get the right to post a snazzy LostGarden medal on your website. Most importantly, you get that warm fuzzy feeling in your tippy-tip toes that stems from a job well done. This is a geeky challenge done for lurve of the game. The Results In my mind, the entire point of the Player with Your Peas exercise was to take a complex design with some potentially messy rat holes (user created levels, physics, path finding, oh my!) and see if you could quickly find the fun. Let's see how folks did: All the prototypes were enjoyable for a couple of core reasons. First, building a world out of little blocks seems to be pleasant at a very simple level. Second, for those who implemented pathfinding, there is something inherently interesting about watching little creatures navigate your world on their own.
Richard Sims' prototype came closest to capturing the fun. He focused on the falling peas portion of the design and managed to add in a solid pass at the combo scoring system. This moved his prototype beyond being merely an intriguing software toy to the point where one could imagine there being a real game. I played with it for more than five minutes.
No one captured the Gold Medal on this challenge! Doh. This award remains wide open until someone submits an amazing prototype with 15 solid minutes of play. Hmm...I wonder who can make a Gold Medal version of Play with Your Peas... There were several others folks that worked on the game, but I didn't have public links to all the playable versions. More Crayon Physics Deluxe Clips from GDC Posted: 15 Mar 2008 01:08 PM CDT Apparently the GDC interviews are surfacing now. I remember vaguely talking to some people from gametrailers and now they published the interview on Gametrailers TV It’s quite a small clip and all I get to say about the game is “you draw stuff, they behave physically correctly and you solve puzzles”. But I’m glad they included it there anyway. There are also couple of other indie developers there; Mårten talks about Fret Nice and Darren demonstrates Iron Dukes. It’s great to see that indie games are getting some airtime, in between GTA IV and Gears of War 2. Link to the Gametrailers TV episode Also I was positively surprised to see Crayon Physics Deluxe talked on DL.TV. They did this small round up of couple of the IGF games and Crayon Physics Deluxe was one and the other one was the sweet 2D/3D platformer Fez. While they didn’t really have any real footage of Crayon Physics Deluxe, they talked about the game in detail and got past the “you draw stuff, they behave physically correctly and you solve puzzles” stage. Garnett Lee has some really constructive comments about the game and he “got” what it’s really all about.

今天又去买了一台ps2,其实就是去年11月22日在日本发售的新型号ps2( http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_4938f71b01000esb.html
)的港版——90006型。在万商电脑城问价格的时候被搞糊涂了,报价从950元、1000元到1100元都有——买水货主机难免要碰到类似的事情——最后还是在经常去的那家店买了1088元的一台,贵就贵一点,就当买个放心吧。
家里的那台30000型ps2忘了是什么时候买的,也用了挺多年的,还为它装了网卡和硬盘,专门用来玩hdl游戏,以至于对那些不支持hdl的ps2游戏都没啥兴趣了( http://blog.sina.com.cn/u/4938f71b010003o0
)。考虑这台老机器总有坏掉的一天,到时候万一买不到ps2怎么办(正如现在在中国也买不到ps了)?所以干脆多买一台“备份”。其实我何尝不想再买一台可以接硬盘的ps2,但市场上已经没有了,也没办法。
不过新型号ps2“轻薄精细”(包装箱写的)的外形也弥补掉了不能hdl的遗憾。
ps2是经典主机那是大家都公认的,就算现在在美国也仍然处于畅销的状态中( http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_4938f71b01008n9t.html
),这当然是因为它上面的软件阵容太过强大,而且这些软件就算随着时间推移,也仍然是宝贵的财产——Wii、xbox360、ps3现阶段还是没办法和它相比的。
我的喜好很杂,什么都可以拿起来玩一玩,当然由于时间的限制,肯定没办法都玩精玩透,不过很多游戏拿起来玩个开头,感受一下游戏的风格和系统,也已经感觉挺快乐的了,所以多平台制霸的策略才是适合我的——当然,多平台的前提是该主机上有一定数量个人喜欢的游戏,否则为个别游戏买主机也不值得。
ps2上当然有不少游戏都是我比较喜欢的,比如“无双”系列,虽然也都是随便玩玩,不像别人那样玩到全人物、全练满、全道具那样的水平,但单是在简单模式下砍砍敌人也觉得挺有意思的,何况ps2上有那么多“无双”作品对我来说真是很超值了——现在就很期待《无双OROCHI魔王再临》( http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_4938f71b01008msx.html

至于ps2上丰富的rpg游戏,也是我一向所喜欢的游戏类型。当然,现在让我花几十个小时打通一款rpg,基本上是不太可能的,但ps2上那么多rpg作品,光看看也觉得挺心满意足的——这已经不是“玩”的快乐,而是“拥有”的快乐了。
不可否认,ps2上也有一些我没啥兴趣的游戏类型,比如格斗游戏,比如足球游戏,但我不喜欢不代表别人不喜欢——每个人都能在ps2上找到自己所喜欢的游戏类型,这才是ps2成功的地方。
最后说一下:刚刚我接了以前的存档玩了下《王国之心2》,里面有唐老鸭和古飞,我们家小朋友很喜欢,坐在旁边看得津津有味。 |

不,保持高G转弯同时踩舵保证不掉高度,还要切换雷达模式作近战扫描不是一件那么轻松能完成的事。
它不够漂亮?
不,模拟飞行游戏自古以来都是硬件发展的标杆。
操作不好?
尝试过用摇杆操作一架活塞式飞机之后你会立即忘记你在硬件上的投资,飞行游戏在适当设备的支持下带来的投入感无与伦比。
那这是因为什么呢?
因为游戏设计的整体水平在上升。
高敏感度反馈、短期挑战、叙事与表演、用奖励来代替惩罚、easy fun、用户行为模式识别、成就,哪一点与模拟飞行游戏沾边?
在游戏设计迅猛发展的今天,模拟飞行游戏依然拒绝考虑用户的感受。
这就像一辆坦克放在面前,不带任何说明书。

Posted: 16 Mar 2008 11:26 PM CDT 今年央视3·15晚会揭露了垃圾短信的来源。报道称,分众传媒子公司分众无线掌握了中国5亿多手机用户中一半的手机用户信息,仅郑州分公司的短信日发送量就达2亿条。 垃圾短信可恨,人人都讨厌,可没想到每天好几亿条的垃圾短信竟然出自我平时颇为尊敬的公司:分众传媒。 艾瑞不报了、天涯删帖了、江南春不接电话了。 在这龌龊的短信群发背后,还有一大批为了赚钱出卖用户信息的无耻公司,甚至包括银行,可悲啊~~~~ 回头再说说这央视。要说广大手机用户被垃圾短信骚扰的不是一天两天了,七八年来一直在水深火热中扑腾,这回央视终于帮浇了把水,问题是早干嘛去了?非等分众传媒做垃圾短信的时候才出来报。分众传媒是做什么的?做媒体的,抢央视饭碗哦,所以才会报的这么干脆,我看不排除央视打压竞争对手的可能。当年中国移动搞垃圾短信最火的时候,可没见这么大规模地曝光。 当然了,平心而论,央视这次曝光是好事。不过江南春不做垃圾短信了,明天蹦出来个江北绿接着做,谁又能管得了?这垃圾短信的源头到底在哪里?是什么机制漏洞下产生的?或者说根本就不是漏洞而是一种操作?电信部门和相关监管部门到底打不打算管管?至少我觉得根除垃圾短信要比封杀艳照意义大得多。 |

Posted: 17 Mar 2008 10:22 AM CDT 整理机器时总是能找到不少自己都忘掉的东西,拿出来看时又会回想起很多以前的事情。 那时我们还在8楼。较现在而言真是个轻松的日子,呵呵,不错。图本身的意义已经不大,绘制时总想着如何如何。回头看时却只记得一些相关的残碎记忆。 还记得画第一个角色的时候师傅从我身边走过,说:“光线有些分散,再集中些会好些。”这句话相信他自己也不记得了。呵呵。 老搭档那时刚来,还很腼腆,谨慎的画着每一张画,我和他的交流也是这个工作开始时开始的。 记得后面不久便开始着手主角装备修改的工作了。时间过的真快,一张画也让我想起不少事情。 天下的工作一直伴随我从25岁到将近30岁。天呐,真够久的。 ---------------------------流行的分割线?----------------------------------------- 顺便汇报下天下的情况,坐骑的动作已经添加了,只是还需要分批一步步的来做,(感谢动画制作的MM。)很快会和大家见面。 主角装备也再逐步的做着调整,怎么说呢?尽力吧。呵呵! 感谢大家一直以来对天下2的关注。以至本想写些个私人的东西也不得不捎带一些天下2的开发情况汇报给大家。由于具体的开发情况都会在开发新闻里放出,我这也就不多罗嗦了。 送2张图给一直支持天下的新老玩家们。老规矩了。呵呵!

3月17日消息,上周四,市场调研机构NPD发布的报告显示,今年二月份,美国视频游戏销售上涨34%,总销售额达到13.3亿美元。
据国外媒体报道,市场调研公司NPD此前发布了今年2月份美国视频游戏机的出货报告。NPD的报告显示,今年2月美国视频游戏销售(包括硬件和软件)上涨了34%,总销售额达到13.3亿美元。其中游戏硬件的销售额达到4.8亿美元,上升了19%。
名列榜首的是任天堂的DS,本月售出58.76万部;其次是Wii,售出43.2万台,而微软Xbox
360在出现供应量不足的情况下,也依然售出了25.46万台;排在第四的索尼PS3的销量为20.08万台。微软发言人大卫·丹尼斯在一封电子邮件中表示“零售商告诉我们,Xbox
360常常供不应求,断货现象时有发生。我们目前正在尽可能的补充库存。”
尽管从发布首款Xbox至今,微软的Xbox业务还一直未能实现盈利。不过微软高层一直在承诺,在截至6月30日的2008财年,该公司Xbox业务一定能够实现盈利。微软还表示,NPD的报告显示,Xbox
360当前在美国的销售总量为960万台,Wii为810万台,PS3为380万台。此外,今年1月Xbox
360游戏的销售额为1.59亿美元;Wii游戏的销售额为1.31亿美元;
PS3游戏的销售额为8000万美元。将于4月29日正式上市的Rockstar

After a dab of water, some tasty scran, and the gleam is back in my eye. Acer to make an "Open Standards" console? Intriguing. People selling FOSS games on ebay? Scandalous - but is it illegal? Y'know how people go "True Combat: Elite would be ace if it was open source" - well it appears we've always had the option of Navy Seals: Covert Operations. Just brought to our attention, this mostly-complete and apparently rather fun Quake 3 nearly-TC is struggling to keep going. I'd never heard of it before, which means their public relations policies either didn't exist exist or completely failed. Why a nearly-TC? Well during the process of moving from mod to total conversion, the development stalled. The developers put it in a Google Code project and moved on, which is a shame because it looks like a very good game. They are, obviously, looking for developers to finish the TC. Beta builds of F1 Spirit are available. It's an ace micro-machines-like game - but faster, and less toy-like, and actually a remake of a different, older game. Still, it's great. Project Gamma is a 2D mech action RPG. I haven't tried it but it's Java and can be played as an applet, and source is available, so experiences in comments if you try it, please! Hair drying... tummy rumbling... scarey Charlie retu... ruuughhh... GEURARGG UUURFUFFU BRAINS! BRRRAAAIIIIIINSSSSS!!!!.... |

——在nds上猛制作cg动画一直是square-enix的坏习惯,看来是改不了了
——战斗画面,还是一个键对应一个人的操作方式,不过角度变成了45度了,人物也Q版化了
——新角色的公布,人设风格还是和系列保持一致的

Posted: 18 Mar 2008 11:11 AM CDT It's almost 1:30 AM. I got home from work about forty minutes ago, after over fifteen hours straight. Around 9:30 tonight, the president of the company announced there was free ice cream and beer for everyone in the break room. And sodas, for those of us who don't drink. Tomorrow is bound to be another repeat of today. I'm learning to hate certain game consoles I used to love. Bummer. And here I am, at home, checking email, posting this blog, and ... working on my game. Trying to put at least an hour into it. I'll go in late tomorrow, anyway... my task-list is largely cleared out, mainly supporting the designers anyway. I can't say it's unique to the games business. I've had weeks like this doing all kinds of software development in my career. And apparently, I'm so stupid that I impose it on myself by developing my own games until the wee hours of the night. Ah, well. That's just the way it goes sometimes. Sometimes you just have to live life in the margins. |

开始大家还认为是媒体上所言的:美国经济、雪灾、再融资、大小非……后来发现这些理由越来越牵强。最后的因素直接指向了主管部门的印花税。
网上谣传,这次大跌的‘主谋’是机构、散户是‘帮凶’。放言:不修改印花税就砸盘,给主管部门脸色看。目标:3500以下!
主管部门不是说:不是人人能抄股吗?机构和散户都听话,割肉封仓!
不是例年两会多数看多吗?让股市这次踏空!

其实,很多人还是看好2008年的中国股市,那些机构、QFII、基金本想好好支持一下国内的资本市场。这次两会中温总理也多次提到‘不作为’。看来我们还是要相信中国的资本市场将进一步完善。金融资本市场的改革与中国经济是息息相关,因为资本市场健康了经济也就回归正轨了。人民的日常生活才能得到稳定的保障。

Posted: 19 Mar 2008 12:24 PM CDT 定义:外存资源指的是通过内容创建工具,比如 max\maya\photoshop\engine/game editor 等创建出来的存储在磁盘、光盘等外部设备的资源文件。 问题:通常外存资源之间存在引用关系,比如模型文件引用贴图、动画等,目前引擎的管理方式是直接在资源文件中包含被引用资源的相对路径文件名,但这两天对游戏资源目录的调整暴露了这个方法的严重问题:当资源目录改变时无法正确读取资源。实际上这种做法对于做数据库开发出身的我是非常不认可的,我们知道关系数据库在建立数据之间的关系时是通过对数据编号,然后指定关联的数据的编号即可,这是关系数据库的基础,通过编号来建立数据之间的关系。如果采用这种方式建立资源间的关系,即使资源目录发生变化,甚至名称发生变化,如果只是引用资源的编号,不就解决这个问题了吗?在引擎开发的初始我也曾想这样做过,但如果真的这么做,却遇到了实际游戏项目开发中的困难。 要做到对资源编号,就要求资源必定在统一的环境中生成,还是用关系数据库举例,数据库表中的数据的都是通过关系数据库系统的开发环境来创建的,创建的同时就指定了编号,所以可以做到通过编号引用数据。而游戏中的资源的创建却不是如此,如上面对外存资源的定义所说,资源是很多个不同的内容创建工具生成的,这种特殊的资源生成方式就决定了几乎无法做到统一的资源编号。当然,可以在每一个不同的工具中通过读取统一的资源编号列表文件来生成资源编号,但是资源往往是由多个人创建的,每个人都会修改这个统一的资源编号列表文件,这就会导致统一资源编号列表数据同步的问题,一旦产生同步错误,整个的游戏资源的管理就会陷入混乱。而且,在生成资源的同时,游戏开发团队中的其他人很可能会删除某些资源,为了保证资源编号的有效性,就必须要回收删除的资源编号,但这会更容易导致同步错误。让我们来看看主流的游戏引擎如何解决这个问题: Unreal3:有一个统一的游戏编辑器可以编辑游戏中所有资源,从这方面来说,它很容易做到资源统一编号,因为它有统一的数据生成环境。但是这种方式却不适合国内游戏的开发习惯,尤其不适合美术人员的使用习惯,通常 art 在 3dsmax \ photoshop 中做好 model \ texture后通过导出插件导出相应数据到指定目录下就可以直接使用,但是 Unreal3 要求必须进行一次导入 Unreal 编辑器的操作,否则引擎无法直接使用导出资源。而实际的情况是 Art 希望导出资源后能立即看到渲染效果,然后对资源做相应的修改和调整。而 Unreal 提供的插件根本无法做到这一点,要想看到效果,就必须导入 Editor,这种过于繁琐的操作对于 Art 来说是非常痛苦的。当然,如果经过一段时间的培训,不习惯也会习惯。 Gamebryo \ Renderware:导出时可以即时看到资源的渲染效果,这对 Art来说很方便,而且可以将多个资源导出成一个包。但是和我们的引擎存在同样的问题:使用资源的文件名称来定位引用的资源。Gamebryo \ Renderware内部的 API 提供了设置 Resource Path 的功能,甚至 Gamebryo在内部还做了局部的容错处理:当引用的资源无法加载时,尝试在当前资源所在的目录下加载引用资源。但即使这样,还是无法从根本上解决问题,在我看来,这种做法其实是纵容了资源管理的任意性,大大增加了资源目录结构混乱的可能性。 从以上可以得出这样一个结论,要做到资源管理的灵活性,就要牺牲资源产生的便利性;要资源产生的便利性,就会丢失资源管理的灵活性。也许这是无法调和的矛盾,或者,还有更好的解决办法? ![]() ![]() |
Posted: 19 Mar 2008 10:53 AM CDT Paizo announced yesterday that they will be sticking with their own re-branded version of Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 for their popular (and well made) Pathfinder series. The Pathfinder RPG will serve as the core book, which will update the 3.5 D&D Rules. You can even download the nice-looking Alpha document from Paizo’s site now. After looking through the rules, they incorporate what I consider some “no brainer” updates to 3.5, and nothing that struck me as brilliant game design. It’s also not nearly complete, since they just offer a selection of updated classes and such, still having the expectation that it’s an add on to the PHB. I personally am not happy about this because I loved the first Pathfinder series, but I’m definitely moving to fourth edition, which means I won’t have a Pathfinder in the new edition. (I am glad to see that Necromancer Games, a Paizo partner, will be publishing an adventure path for 4e. I just hope it’s up to the same standards.) Looking at it from a business perspective, however, this makes a lot of sense. WotC is behind in offering the big third party publishers the new license and rules to use 4e. Paizo is uniquely positioned with the existing 3.5 market. Judging from the divisive reaction to 4e (and those who just don’t want to pay money to switch rules) there will be a market for 3.5 for at least the near future. I’m not sure they had a choice. Still, I hope they produce high quality accessories and adventures for 4e, even if they don’t switch for Pathfinder. The truth of the matter for me is that no one else is making products up to their level except Wizards. |

Indie RPG News Roundup, March 19th Posted: 19 Mar 2008 11:59 AM CDT Indie Computer Role-Playing Games. They aren't just for breakfast anymore! Somehow, in spite of putting in nearly 80 hours this last week for the harsh taskmasters of The Day Job, I've managed to dig up a little bit of dirt on the latest goings-on in the independent computer RPG scene. Geneforge 5 Spiderweb Software has released some additional information on their latest RPG in development, Geneforge 5. They've confirmed that it is the final game in the series, and expect it to be available for the Mac in November. Some details: The storyline will be closer to Geneforge 1 and 2; there will be five different factions to interact with; there will be three Shaper classes and six rebel classes; there will be "considerable" upgrades to the interface; and the spell system will remain similar but be reworked to solve some issues that have cropped up. For more details, you can check out the Geneforge 5 March Update. Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled ![]() I wish I had a DS, now. But I guess now I have another good reason to get one. Hey, guys, any hope for a PC / Mac release? :) Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled Project Page Project Rhapsody You may remember me mentioning Project Rhapsody back in September, but progress seems to be happening on this ambitious project. The latest is a pretty cool-looking battle video, which makes me think this game is really pretty far along: You can find more information on the Project Rhapsody Website. Adventures of Cendah Version 1.01 of Adventures of Cendah has been released by KingDiz entertainment. Updates include: More mana when leveling, fix to a character freeze issue when leveling up, more gold in the tutorial, collision fixes, changes to bats, and trees now blocking enemy arrows. Adventures of Cendah Krum This hack-and-slasher looks to be getting made in Blender's game engine + Python. Hopefully that means multi-platform? It's a freshman effort currently two years into development. The website and the game are both under development, but its projected release date is late 2008. And here's a short gameplay video: The website is still as much under construction as the game itself. Hopefully it will expand a bit soonishly: Krum Website Depths of Peril Soldak Entertainment has a new short story up, taking place in the world of the (awesome!) Depths of Peril. It is entitled "Looking Red the Crystals Cry." Checking out the story, I felt a sudden desire to boot up the game again. It's been a few weeks, and like Diablo it's a pretty good game for some quick hack & slash action. It's just that there's so much to do in the game, with so many quests evolving as you play, that it gets tempting to just keep playing... ![]() Monster's Den is a quick-and-dirty dungeon crawl. It's not quite the level of quality of FastCrawl, but it's online and free to play. And frankly, I remember playing in some ol' Pen-and-Paper games back in the early days that weren't much different or any better. Enjoy! (Hat tip to TIGSource for this one.) Monster's Den Age of Decadence I have already mentioned the Age of Decadence "playthrough" at RPG Watch, but I figured I'd mention it again, AND point out the staggeringly huge original thread discussing it over at the Iron Tower forums. 59 pages and counting as of right now! And that's what I've got for this week. And, uh, last week. There is some pretty fun stuff here or on the horizon for computer RPG fans. But now I do have a few extra questions that come to mind when looking over this stuff: #1 - With both the Geneforge and Avernum series coming to a close, what's next? #2 - While there have been patches and story updates, things have been quiet from Soldak Entertainment. What is Steven & company up to? Depths of Peril II? Something else entirely? #3 - What other project is Studio Archcraft working on? And will we see Shamus "McLaser" Young take a more active roll in game design & writing? #4 - Planewalker Games has been a little quiet lately concerning their upcoming Baldur's Gate - inspired indie RPG, "The Broken Hourglass," but Jason has assured me they are still busy toiling away and trying to get it done. But I wonder how close they are to alpha at this point... As usual, keep me posted! This
post examines the many things that went wrong with this project – and also the
many things that worked out nicely. Problems 1. No Money By far the biggest problem that the project faced was the lack of budget. Now even from the outset, the plan was to develop cheaply – but I had originally been thinking $50,000 for a budget PS2 title (coming in at the end of the PS2’s life cycle, when there is the maximum possible installed base and a great opportunity for budget titles). In fact, we did have a deal with a European publisher to fund us for the full $50,000 – but for reasons that we will touch upon shortly, we never saw this money, the PS2 version had to be scrapped, and at that point the project was somewhat doomed. The version we made had a budget of about $5,000. On the whole, it is miraculous that we delivered anything!
2. No Passage to India We set up a new developer in India – Fantasy Labs – to work on this project, and began working with Sony in London to find a way to get a PS2 devkit to India. This turned out to be monumentally difficult! Sony wasn’t the problem – they were actually tremendously helpful and supportive – Indian customs were the point of tension. Perhaps if we’d been a larger company we could have greased the wheels better, and found a way, but without getting the devkit into India we couldn’t get the budget for the PS2 version, and eventually the battle had gone on for so long that the publisher in question had to break the news that it was too late to develop a budget PS2 title. We were disconsolate, but at least we could ship the PC version.
3. No Tweaking Phase Yet there was a major problem with the PC version: we didn’t have the money to finish it. The most important stage in any game is tweaking and blind testing, when you sit it down with players and observe their reactions to the game. This phase allows you to eliminate any confusion on the part of the player, smooth any rough edges, and generally streamline the play of the game. AAA games get months and months of tweaking time – in Nintendo and a few other places, games have the luxury of not being released until they are just right. We had a zero-length tweaking phase. I conducted three blind trials with the game – but without the budget to pay for the programming work to fix the problems found, it was pointless continuing. Despite knowing we had problems that needed to fix, there was nothing that could be done about it. (One particular problem haunts me: the Puzzle Path, which many players will struggle to enjoy, is directly in front when the game begins. Most players end up trying this Path first, and get very confused. I really wanted to make the Fun Path be directly in front – this Path is easiest to understand, and comes with essentially no risk of failure. But without the money, we couldn’t get even this simple fix made).
4. Spiraling Code Base Additionally, we had a problem with the code base. Fantasy Labs had another development contract at the time, which was helping meet the bills. But this project required a much more complicated code base than Play with Fire, and sadly a decision was made somewhere to keep both projects on the same code base. This meant that the project was constantly being remade as the code base for the other project was refined, giving no end of development problems.
5. Too High Spec By far the most devastating of the problems resulting from the spiraling code base was that the final game turned out to be too high spec for players in our target audience to be able to play the game! Ironically, the development tool set ran on any more machines than the final game – some people who worked on the project have never seen the finished game running! Depressingly, this has had the most negative effect on the project. While we have had many downloads from Manifesto Games, the vast majority were unable to get the game to run.
Successes 1. Verb Game Method The basic idea of the “verb game” methodology was to identify some unusual verbs with playful aspects, and develop these in isolation into a game. I believe this worked brilliantly, and I’d do it again if we had the budget. The original plan – to be developing games in less than six months, and to have a portfolio so we were not dependent upon the success or failure of any one title – was completely sound. But of course, without the money we couldn’t follow through. Nonetheless, I believe the strategy was sound, it was simply the implementation which let us down.
2. Arson IS fun! Burning things to the ground in Play with Fire is tremendously entertaining once the player knows what they are doing. I believe there’s potential for a future game to build on this mechanic, although I very much doubt it will be done by us. The play of the game is really quite original. Although some of the platforming elements work similarly to conventional platform games, this is the only game I know of that has serious consequences when you jump around indiscriminately, since the platforms you touch can burn to the ground shortly afterwards, along with any others that are connected to them! Just watching the flames spread through a big object like the Trojan Horse in ‘Helen’, or the Houses of Parliament, or a WWI biplane is inherently satisfying.
3. Multiple Paths The multiple paths to allow for players to play in different ways was a sound idea – but alas no information is provided to the player to judge how to approach this. This was a product of the lack of tweaking phase, already mentioned. Despite this, the basic idea of structuring the game to be played in different ways while using the same engine emerges as a sound concept. Anyone can play the Fun Path and get some enjoyment from it, while Fiero-seeking players have the Challenge Path, and players who prefer cerebral riddles have the Puzzle Path. Despite the problems, I’m still pleased with how this worked out, although doing it again I might be tempted to offer a more explicit mode select screen.
4. Open Pool The reason the multiple paths approach worked to some extent was the tremendous talent of the Open Pool – a group of non-professional level designers who worked on the project in return for a share of revenue (at least on paper – in practice, without the PS2 version we were never going to see good numbers). The open pool method worked something like this:
This basic method is a brilliantly simple (and cheap!) way of developing game materials, and one that I believe has further potential. Patrick Dugan (who was one of the most productive members of the pool) dubbed it “the Bateman Method”, which as a Brit I find slightly embarrassing, but it underlines the confidence we have that this approach could be used successfully. I want to take this opportunity to thank Maurizio Pozzobon, Patrick Dugan, Ian Tyrrell, Marc Majcher, Wil Evans and Toby Everett once again for their contributions to the project – you were the best part of the development process, by far, and I loved seeing your ideas come out in the game! I also want to thank ihobo troubleshooter Neil Bundy for getting involved in the level design late in the game, and also my wife, Adria, for making a simple level!
5. Recognised as Art! And finally, it is a cause for minor celebration that Play with Fire was featured at IndieCade in Sheffield. We may have lost money making the project, but it’s nice that what we made has been recognised as being artistically interesting.
Conclusion Although there were many problems that dragged this project down to the point of commercial obscurity, I don’t regret pursuing it for a second. This was the first time I have controlled every aspect of game development, from production and design through to marketing and legal, on a single project – and the first time I’ve used my own money to fund a project. I learned a lot from having this opportunity, and more than that, I am actually really pleased with Play with Fire despite its problems. There is a great game, buried under the hardware problems and the confusing initial experience, one that I hope will be fondly remembered by the small audience the game has received. If you have a machine that has the necessary spec, and you haven’t tried Play with Fire, why not give it a go? The demo is available from the Manifesto Games site, and is free. (It’s $20 to unlock the full game). You really need to see the game running to appreciate it – screenshots don’t capture the carnage of watching the flames spread! (Just remember to try the Fun Path first - it's on the left when you start!) I’m glad to say that we set out to make a game about burning things to the ground, and with the help of the Open Pool, the good people at Manifesto Games and a bit of luck, we succeeded. Last week’s involved Dave’s rampant reading of excellent webcomics and making terrible family-puns, where he asked which of the classic Smash Bros. characters is your favorite. The legendary elf/faerie/confused adventurer Link took the lead with 29% of the votes, followed by the sexy Samus and even sexier Kirby tied in second with 16% each. Perhaps if Kirby stole Samus’ powers, they could combine their fans and beat the green-clad boomerang whore. Captain Falcon comes in third with a very french 8%, and every other fighter (including Yoshi) got at least some love but none pulling ahead of the pack. 1、目前VMware虚拟机对3d支持最好的版本还是5.3,我在6.0版本上测试,结果3d测试全部白屏死机,因此还是推荐大家下载5.3版,下载的地址我就不贴了,在百度上搜或者去霏凡都可以找的到,注意一定要下载5.3版的,别忘了安装汉化补丁; 2、安装好虚拟机之后,建立一个虚拟机,请本机建议WindowsXP操作系统; 3、由于虚拟机占用系统大量资源,所以你的电脑配置一定要高一些,效果才可以,至少请符合以下配置:内存不小于512M、CPU不低于2.4G、显卡的显存至少128M 4、给虚拟机装好系统之后(建议XP),进入虚拟机的系统,首先安装DirectX 9.0c(如果你没有安装程序,请去网上下载一个拷贝到虚拟机里面安装); 5、接着安装VMware tools,如果你安装了汉化补丁,请按照下面的方法安装VMware tools:在VMware Workstation的菜单栏找到 “虚拟机”----“设置”-----“CD-ROM” ----“使用ISO镜像” -----“浏览” 定位到VMware Workstation的安装目录中windows.iso文件,然后进入虚拟系统,打开“我的电脑”----“光驱”----找到 “setup.exe”文件执行安装即可。 6、安装后重启系统,设置好分辩等显示设置(设好就不要再改了)。关闭虚拟系统。打开VMware主界面——编辑——参数——输入,去掉“当鼠标离开窗口后取消捕获”前的勾。 7、在修改之前,请确定你的虚拟机是正常关闭的,而非打开或者是暂停的状态,打开你的虚拟系统存放的文件夹有个后坠名为.vmx的文件,用记事本打开,再最后加入:

So it's not exactly like they have much to live up to. Sure, I have a tender place in my heart for the movie from my youth that let us all believe that our mad gaming skillz could make us uniquely qualified to save the entire universe from destruction. But here's a handful of reasons that conceit just wouldn't work in 2008: #1 - Space Combat Games? No longer popular. I Know This. Maybe if it was "The Last Space Marine," or "The Last Master Chief" it would work. #2 - Arcade Machines? Sadly, ancient history. A new, high-tech arcade machine appearing ANYWHERE would certainly arouse suspicion. #3 - The alien super-game-tech of 1984 wouldn't be half as impressive as a computer capable of running Crysis at full detail. #4 - The other folks in the trailer park are too busy trying to 5-star Green Grass and High Tides in Rock Band to watch you hit a high score on some weird space game. #5 - Piloting a star-fighter from inside a cockpit? Retro. These days its all remotely-piloted vehicles anyway. Okay, so I guess that's why a remake wouldn't work. I guess maybe with the sequel they can do something else related to video games. I could try and come up with a plot, but in my current state of mind, everything I think of that strikes me as remotely cool would be a total rip-off of Ender's Game. But hey, it would be kinda cool to have an army of kids in a tournament remotely saving the universe on their XBoxes without ever knowing it... |

Posted: 20 Mar 2008 08:43 AM CDT 前几天请了三天年假,想放松一下。周一去周边逛了一下,没觉得有多大兴致。到周二就发觉无聊了,摸到公司看了看。 发现上周发现的一个 bug 还没人解决,跟同事商量着把问题解决了,大约消耗了一个多小时的时间。然后又整理了下新近写的东西的文档,把下面的任务布置了一下。当下决定最后一天年假不休了。 提前一天上班感觉很好,写程序满有意思,就是原来觉得很无聊的文档工作也比闲着有聊的多。 btw, 我们这里有位程序员离开了,劝说他离开的。毕竟每个人都有适合的工作,都有不适合的工作。管理团队确是件复杂的工作,比管理程序项目难。也有挺多东西想写写,却又拿不准要不要写。 另外,又收到两位朋友的简历,我暂时还没时间仔细考虑,请多多包涵。这几天很忙,真的很忙。 |

Posted: 21 Mar 2008 04:03 AM CDT 毕业于某游戏教育基地的小王(化名)最近为了求职应聘的事十分苦恼。毕业半个月来,小王信心满满地给十余家网络游戏公司投去了简历,但都石沉大海,至今没有收到任何面试通知。一心想成为一名游戏美术设计师的小王对自己的作品颇具自信,但结果却大为出乎意料。他焦急地致电企业询问情况,得到的答复令小王倍感惊讶。几家知名的网游公司均委婉地表示无意与小王进一步面谈,原因竟然是他的作品体现出的水平十分出色,让企业大感意外,而他的简历却表明之前他并未有任何游戏公司的从业经验,这使企业方面对其作品的真实性和原创性有所怀疑。 笔者对比观看了小王的设计作品和目前比较流行的网络游戏画面,发现他的美术作品无论从细致逼真程度上,还是从整体效果上都毫不逊色。作为一个没有游戏行业从业经验,仅经过职业培训的新人,确实有些让人惊讶。然而小王向笔者展示了作品制作过程中各种模型,贴图,线框图等中间步骤的截图,让人不得不信服。 近年来游戏行业发展迅速,各大企业都慨叹优秀人才重金难觅,笔者不禁为那些与小王擦肩而过的企业惋惜。这里面固然有企业方面主观的因素,也有一些客观的原因。小王就读的这个游戏教育基地是沪上知名的游戏培训机构,与美国著名游戏开发商EPIC、以及法资游戏制作企业维塔士公司都有定向培训就业的合作,教授的课程内容主要集中在次世代游戏开发技术,在游戏行业中属于目前最前沿的高端技术。限于网络传输速度的限制,目前的网络游戏还没有办法支持这样高精度的游戏画面,因而网络游戏开发企业对游戏美术设计的要求也没有次世代游戏这么高。小王投简历的时候附上的当然是自己最得意的作品,这些作品完全是按照次世代游戏美术的标准来制作的,本来这么做应该能够尽显他技术与艺术方面的优势;但糟糕的是,小王缺乏求职的经验,没有附上制作过程的截图,反而导致了企业惊喜之余产生了怀疑,最终影响了自己的面试机会。 从另一个角度来看,小王求职应聘选择的方式也欠妥。以小王的技术能力和艺术素养而论,网络游戏开发并非最适合他施展才华的唯一舞台,育碧、美国艺电、英佩数码(EPIC)、仟游等以次世代电视游戏和PC游戏开发为主的的外资游戏企业也急需像他这样有良好的美术基本功并通晓次世代游戏开发技术的高端美术设计师。可能是缺乏行业经验,初出茅庐的小王对于应聘这些行业巨头仍然有一点怯场的心态。笔者认为,像小王这样具备优秀技术能力的年轻人脚踏实地,谦虚谨慎固然值得肯定,但也应该对自己充满自信。眼高手低固然不可取,但妄自菲薄也会错失宝贵的机会。重要的是对自身能力有一个充分而正确的认识,才能寻找到一个真正适合自己,能够充分施展才华的舞台。 |

中国日前推出网络防沉迷系统,网络游戏正逐步被带往正面,健康的发展方向。中国网络游戏行业也逐步走向国际,走向产业化。越来越多的网络游戏开发企业得到关注。 日前,有媒体进行了一次网上调查,共有3206人参与了这次调查。调查结果显示,有35%的白领每天下班后就闭门不出玩游戏。这其中有接近40%的人选择网络游戏。很多人对玩游戏都是抱着小玩怡情的态度,认为在工作之余玩网络游戏,能够减轻压力以及活动思维,对自己是有很大的帮助的。 网络游戏的特征就是,通过网络的连接,让不同区域,不同年龄,不同性别的玩家在一起交流、玩耍。这对培养个人的组织能力,团队协调能力以及社交能力都会有不同程度的帮助。所以网络游戏越来越受到教育部门的关注。 苏格兰教育机构日前联手国内16家小学开始了一项小规模教学实验,其内容听起来可能会让国内的孩子们惊讶不已:要求学生们在每天早上开始正式上课前,先跟川岛隆太教授一起玩上20分钟的NDS《成人脑力锻炼》。根据相关机构的调查数据显示,每天早上正式开始课程之前,让孩子们先玩一会《成人脑力锻炼》有助于加强学生在数学计算等方面的思维活跃度,进而促进课堂学习效率的提高。 为此,由苏格兰政府出资34000英镑购进了480多台NDS主机提供给试点学校,开始了这项为期10周的教学实验,而这些学校的孩子们也有幸成为了“游戏机走进教育”这一新课题的第一批参与者。 从经济效益来看网络游戏产业,年初,随着盛大等中国网游公司的财报发布,在美上市的中国网游股2007年Q4财报发布完毕。受惠网游业务优异表现,各网游股业绩大幅增长,均以超投资者预期姿态交出答卷,给市场带来了很大的惊喜。 一叶知秋,从点点滴滴的事实来看,如今的中国网络游戏行业正在步向一个更强大,更自主创新,更有和国外网游一试锋芒的胆气。这一切都说明了网游产业的发展,政府的支持和引导,玩家的理性消费以及来自网游企业的一份自信。 玩是天性,但是玩要玩出名堂。如果能将玩网游的精力与智慧放到网游技术的学习与研发上,也许就能搭上经济发展的快车。因此有专家指出,网络游戏并不是洪水猛兽,只要利用得法,它也会让人受益。而现今,已有越来越多的玩家和关注网络游戏的人士认识到了网络游戏产业的无限前景,每年都有大量的游戏开发人才投入到网络游戏的自主研发当中来。 我们有理由相信,在未来的游戏产业的创收中,人才成为最为重要的资源和力量,而作为培养民众职业技能的游戏学院也将有更大的舞台。 |

2008年初始,EA高调宣布了新一轮的亚洲新策略,其中包括将亚太总部迁往新加坡、将中国市场作为亚洲五大市场之一、可能还要在08年进行新一轮亚洲地区的投资收购,新任EA中国区总经理Jason
Chein还接受了大量国内游戏媒体的专访,专访中提到在未来几年内,EA中国将研发1-3款针对中国游戏市场的网络游戏,使得EA中国从研发走向市场,并且将选择更多的合作伙伴来真正将EA产品带入国内。
EA中国这些大动作,随即在行业内“一石激起千层浪”,其中欢呼雀跃者有之,破口大骂者有之,冷嘲热讽者有之,其中最夸张的是有人居然指责EA中国这些08新策略属于“引狼入室”,其实细细想来,主要还是EA产品所带来的利益链,策略一旦改变,利益链就会改变,骂人者无非是出自自身的利益考虑。 遗憾的是,确实没有人站在中国游戏行业的发展角度上去想一下:究竟是“引狼入室”还是“引资入市”或者“引牛入市”?2008年的EA中国是“狼”还是“牛”?如果要彻底否认EA的好产品进入国内,是否也意味着就是否认了我们目前引进外资来促进发展的国策呢?自2002年起,中国已经超越美国成为世界第一的引资大国,外资的大量引入,带给中国更多的发展机遇。中国经济的巨大发展有目共睹,无可非议,也就是证明了“引资入市”的正确性,而如果引资到位,产品优势独特,那就是“引牛入市”,带来的是良好的引资效应。
而恰恰EA中国08的新策略,正不仅仅是“引资入市”,由于其投资模式和产品优势,称之为“引牛入市”毫不为过!
一,直接的投资模式属于“取之于中国用之于中国”:
2007年5月间,EA宣布直接投资1.67亿美元于国内第一梯队的游戏运营公司第九城市,并且同时也将当时EA全球最关注的有过韩国成功历史的网络游戏《FIFA Online》签给了九城。而08年初的亚太会议上,EA亚洲区总裁Jon Niermann表示,08年EA将考虑在亚洲进行新一轮投资。这正是目前中国经济“引资入市”策略中最重要的环节:直接引入资金。九城是国内运营公司,公司得到的投资是用在国内,而相比之于其他的国外游戏巨头来说,EA是唯一一家为国内运营商投资的。从这个投资角度上说,既给投资,又给产品,正是“取之于中国用之于中国”的好事。 二,研发适应中国的网游是“技术外溢”效应 Jason Chein在数家媒体的专访中都提到,他负责EA上海游戏制作室的战略规划及发展,在过去短短一年的时间内,已经成功打造了一支由超过200名出色员工组成的优秀团队,今后将全面负责EA在单机及网络游戏领域的研发工作。而正是这支团队,也将在未来几年内研发1-3款研发适应中国的网络游戏。 这正是引资的最重要的部分,俗称“以市场换技术”:“技术外溢”效应。技术外溢是指外商直接投资在东道国生产经营活动中的副产品,包括工艺溢出,人力资源流动效应等,它由技术知识本身类似公共产品的特殊性质,即非竞争性和多样化的排他性决定。随着科学技术的突飞猛进,利用外商直接投资的技术外溢效应提高本国企业的技术水平,是当今多数发展中国家的发展趋势,也是我国“以市场换技术”引资政策的重要依据之一。 在国内成立开发工作室培养本土开发人才,这是很多外资游戏巨头所做过的事情,至今我们国内的开发还在享受着这个特殊的人才红利,大量开发高手曾经就职于EA、UBI、光荣等公司。而EA中国除了培养人才之外,更加加上了一条——适应国内市场的网游,不要小看这条,至今除了极少数的韩国小公司做过针对中国文化的游戏之外,还没有哪家巨头公司做过,而以EA的开发实力来真正投入一款中国特色的网游,对我们整个国内游戏产业都是一个最好的“技术外溢”效应。 三,产品优势决定了EA属于“引牛入市” 2008年EA将有三款受到全球瞩目的游戏进入国内:《FIFA OL 2》、《NBA STREET OL》、《战锤OL》。《FIFA OL 2》签给了九城,适逢奥运年,产品优势结合了EASPORTS十年以上的开发优势及韩国Neowiz的网游开发经验,我个人在2008年预测一文中就猜测将大胜至少30万在线;《NBA STREET OL》在中国,更加是有越来越热门的篮球运动为铺垫,还有NBA中国公司的成立,甚至还有《街头篮球》培养的用户,产品优势在中国何止是大胜;《战锤OL》更是全球都在关心的游戏,直接挑战王座游戏《魔兽世界》,这样的游戏不进国内,那是我们国内玩家的遗憾。如果我们再加上Jason宣布要制作的专门适应中国特色的3款网游,那么这样的产品优势有哪家国外巨头可以比的? 引资策略中,关键的一环就是产品,大量的垃圾产品进入就和引资的目的背道而驰,比如韩国泡菜网游实在是没必要引入那么多。而如果产品优势强烈,直接就发挥了“引资入市”中最大的作用——外资对中国经济发展的促进;还间接发挥了“技术外溢”效应,因为好产品对于东道国企业的学习创新能力是最有帮助的。3款强势产品,3款中国特色产品,已经不止是“引资入市”,而是“入市必牛”,属于“引牛入市”。 本文无意为EA辩解什么,而是希望所有国内行业同行需要站在产业角度看问题,EA、暴雪、光荣等等,能成为巨头就是有其过人之处,EA中国的08策略,正是我们国内市场需要的“引牛入市”。而出于利益链来说事的“引狼入室”其实很无稽,如果EA这样的强势产品也是狼的话,不知道那些韩国公司算什么?披着牛皮的狼?披着狼皮的牛? |

Gran Turismo Behind-the-Scenes, Beyond the Apex Posted: 21 Mar 2008 07:00 AM CDT I never imagined that being a serious auto enthusiast and a hard core gamer would ever amount to anything life altering, except carpal tunnel syndrome and continuously suspended driver’s license. Until the day I got a call from SCEA asking me if I would like to produce a documentary on the latest version in the Gran Turismo franchise, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. Hmm, let’s think about it for a second, cars and games, I thought I had died and gone to Heaven! Of course, I was stoked to be involved in the project and especially since the game was Gran Turismo. GT is my all time favorite racing game “simulator”, so much so that I had two custom full size driving cabinets built, so I could get the full on race experience. I was really excited to get over to Japan, capture the vibe of PDI and especially meet Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of GT. I had heard that he was a huge car fanatic and that we would get to film his collection. Well after four months of filming and editing, the HD video documentary is finally complete. I believe that we were able to capture the passion, the ambition and the dedication of man who has revolutionized both the gaming and auto industry. Thus the documentary is aptly named “Beyond the Apex.” I do not want to give too much away but if you thought you knew what goes into creating a Gran Turismo game, think again. Posted: 20 Mar 2008 07:40 PM CDT 6小时工作制的生活 全国人大代表、浙江大学副校长姒健敏建议:在全国实行统一的6小时工作制(《浙江日报》3月19日报道)。不知道有多少‘资本家’和‘劳动者’思考过? 就业 当竞争日趋紧张时,许多人直接面临的是超强负荷劳动和失业两重选择。更多刚刚毕业的大学生甚至连个机会都不给,造成‘负’工资‘零’工作。这让资本家节约人力投入的同时也对优秀人才不珍惜。 公司有业务需要可以象游戏客服那样倒3班。每日工作12小时开两班,18小时开3班,24小时连轴开4班。失业人数绝对下降!不过老板的员工保险将成倍增加,相比其投入要比给加班费底(如果有加班费)。 生活质量 最近专家提出“让生活慢下来”简直是放屁!回到《闯关东》种地时代还撮合……但是农民从来不需要打卡种地。 女友曰:没房甭结婚!…… 哥们曰:酒吧轮流请客…… 儿子曰:没汽车不去幼儿院…… 老娘曰:手术费要筹备…… 在重压下何谈生活质量?中国人还是怒念家庭的。自己享受生活了,父母妻儿怎么办?还是生存就业压力问题,谁不想过个好年? 创收 从另一个方面讲6小时工作制或许是个创收的工作方式。首先,工作时间短了,或许更要效率了。如果想放弃个人享受还可以再兼职。在国外一个人打两份工的海龟们都有亲身体会吧。白天做游戏策划晚上给广告公司设计平面,抄个外汇,多么丰富的生活呀……收入呢?肯定比现在强! 与世界接轨 很多欧洲国家实行了6小时工作制不管其经济好坏,每个人的生活都很悠闲,甚至是散漫。我去过德国的一家公司工作,下午3点到4点半要喝下午茶。老板说:只有会享受生活的人才会工作……真是家好公司。但是一旦您迟到或者工作不努力,业绩差。马上开除……有本事才有茶喝。 住房 6小时工作制将提高住房的使用率。仔细核算下,我们每天能在家里呆多久?12小时?18小时?很多人上班8小时,路途2小时,加上买菜接孩子……使用率不足60%,却要付出100%的高价格。 生命就一次 我们知道光阴不能倒流。“人最宝贵的是生命,生命每个人只有一次。人的一生应当这样度过,当你回首往事的时候,不会因为虚度年华而悔恨,也不会因为卑鄙庸俗而羞愧……”这是俄国著名作家奥斯特洛夫斯基笔下的主人公保尔.柯察金曾经说过的。 很多的时候我们都清醒地意识到:年轻的时候因为没钱而不能好好享受生活,到老了也没体力去享受。 听说很多老人特别喜欢孩子,因为在他们年轻的时候没有体会与孩子交流的天伦之乐……现在那孩子的孩子补过。可惜现代的很多年轻人不着急要后代,怕累赘……于是那些可怜的老人更显孤苦。 何必呢?现在有时间就多和孩子在一起。 如果是6小时工作制,我将更有时间带孩子去玩。这一生绝不白活! |

House of Nintendo Presents: The Third Parties: Capcom Posted: 21 Mar 2008 06:06 AM CDT Everybody knows that third party support is important for any game console. Even a developer as accomplished as Nintendo needs other developers to succeed on their platform. So, it is no surprise that third party support on Wii is one of the biggest controversies surrounding the system. It is this blogger's opinion that third party support has been fine, when one factors in the circumstances the system was in. Hardly anyone believed that the system would succeed and as such few were on board. The few that were, like Ubisoft, were rewarded with million sellers like Red Steel. Part of the problem is the video game enthusiast press, especially print magazines. IGN has a dedicated Nintendo staff that is forced to pay attention. The magazines (especially Game Informer) get very enthused about PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 titles and seem to give mediocre support to Wii games. So, one problem is that gamers are often unaware of what is even available and what is coming (which is why we choose to do things like our RPG preview series at House of Nintendo: it's all about being informed!). This series will briefly talk about the third party company in general, what they've done for Wii so far, and what we'll see from them in the future. Let's start by introducing one of Nintendo's oldest friends, Capcom. Image from IGN.com Capcom was formed in 1979 in Japan, and have established themselves as one of the greatest "developer/publisher" combos of all time. Part of the reason for the Osaka based companies success was and still is their very aggressive American branch. Capcom USA, under the leadership of Capcom's vice president of business development and strategic planning, Christian Svensson, are marketing wizards. They're smart: they reach out to fans in useful and constructive ways. For example, noticing a slow but unusually steady pace of orders for the DS adaptation of Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney, Capcom USA helped build a fan community by allowing certain game assets to be used by personal fan websites. By nurturing this growing interest, Capcom has taken a years old Japanese franchise using a thought to be moribund game genre (point and click adventure) and made it into a flagship series in the United States. Very smart. Fans, however, no doubt remember Capcom for their steady stream of classics, including Mega Man and Street Fighter II. Not too mention the amazing Bionic Commando! With all that support, one would have expected the company to come out swinging with Wii titles right off the bat. Well... not exactly. Whether it is because they didn't believe in Wii or because of simple timing, the company just didn't have much going for the console early on. They have, however, enthusiastically supported the Virtual Console from the very beginning, as many Capcom classics can be found on the service. The first blip was a re-release of the superb Resident Evil: 4, which updated (and vastly better IMO) Wii controls. Though highly recommended, it was of course a port. The first new game of note, and the first exclusive, was the much heralded Zak and Wiki: Quest for Barbaro's Treasure. While not a massive hit, it is generally regarded as one of the Wii's finest titles and is continuing to sell at a steady pace. The next exclusive Wii effort was The Umbrella Chronices, the Resident Evil Themed light gun shooter. Providing an experience unique for Wii (it was a flagship title for the Zapper gun shell) with a strong IP, this is clearly Capcom's first hit Wii game. It has shipped a million copies so far. So what's next for the company? For one, they may be resposible for publishing the finest golf game yet on Wii. We Love Golf, coming out sometime in 2008, is a full blown, AAA level golf extravaganza. It's being developed by Camelot in Japan, a highly respected developer who has done such titles as Golden Sun and Mario Tennis. Next, they are remaking a 2006 PS2 game called Okami. Oh, another remake, big deal. Well, Okami is a BIG DEAL. IGN.com's 2006 game of the year, Okami is a Zelda inspired adventure with stunning artistry. It was a commercial failure for Capcom, but a groundswell of support for a Wii version started rumbling down the pipeline. Okami had certain features that really begged for Wii conversion, such as "celestial painting," and it didn't take long for Capcom to realize that they had something special on their hands. Expect Okami to drop sometime this year as well, and maybe the game will get the attention it deserves. Finally, we have Street Fighter IV. The sequel to the legendary game is coming to the "monster" consoles for sure, but what about Wii? We don't know yet, but Capcom has hinted that a port of possible. So while Capcom may have come out of the gate slowly, it appears that their Wii support is growing and only getting stronger. Read the IGN.com article about how Okami was remade for Wii. So it’s a chance to support indie creators, get some great games, and also show off your gamer cred. I sure hope the game developers are getting a good cut on this…! |

Posted: 22 Mar 2008 07:50 AM CDT 其实我并没有用 lua 亲手写过什么大规模的项目。超过 5 千行代码的项目几乎都是 C 或是 C++ 写的。这几天算是做了点复杂的玩意了。几经修改和删减,最后接近完工的这个东西统计下来不多不少 3000 行(误差在十位数)。其中用 C 编写了基础模块 900 多行(仅仅是 socket api 的封装和 byte 流的编码解码),剩下的都是用 lua 设计并实现的。 好吧,我承认 2000 多行代码也只是一个小东西。不过用 lua 实现的一个 wiki 系统,sputnik 还不到 2000 行呢。lua 有一种特质,用的久了就容易体会到。它和 python ruby 这些更为流行的动态语言是不同的。曾经,我把选择 lua 的理由,肤浅的停留在了更轻便更高效上,虽然这些也很重要,但抓住语言的特质才是更关键的。 没有一所学校会教授 lua 这种小语言。教学语言多为 C C++ java (或者更古老一些的 fortran lisp ?)。近年来有听说教 python 的,不过我想 lua 很难进入教学领域。所以大多数用 lua 的程序员,基本上都是半路出家,用过别语言。其中以 C/C++ 为多。我想这是因为 lua 不像 python 有太多成熟的库可以直接使用,要用之到实际项目中去,用 C 为它写扩展必不可少。 或许日后,lua 的扩展库会越来越丰富,lua 程序员不再需要亲自操刀写扩展模块。但就现状来说,我认为也不是坏事。毕竟自己实现的东西最熟悉,(包括 lua 本身的 source code ,规模也不算大,值得一读),知道其性能要点,怎么使用最适宜。 lua 的语言相当简洁,数据类型也少到了极致,真是增一分便觉多余,减一点就有缺陷。这样,我们便不用再把语言用的不好归结到语言的设计本身上。深刻理解它就能用起来游刃有余。 几乎每个 lua 程序员独立写出来的代码都风格迥异。因为我们既可以以面向对象的形式来构建系统,又能够把它当函数式语言实用,还可以直接来描述数据(这是 lua 1.0 的最初用途)。虽然这样,会给大规模项目的多人合作造成一些困扰。但我们能面对多大的项目呢?让我们项目的构架师去把项目划成更小的独立组件,然后用 lua 快乐的实现它。让原本用别的语言需要上万行的工作用 lua 在两三千行中解决。 lua 中复杂的对象类型只有 table 和 userdata 两个。 userdata 往往比较单一,只用来处理效率紧要的数据。这些是放在 C 层次中做的,很容易隔离开。(当然,用之不慎也会出许多问题。不过多为新的 lua 程序员缺乏经验,把 lua 简单看成一个 C 代码粘合剂所致。) 真正复杂的只有 table ,它回相互链接,构成复杂的生存依赖关系。而另外跟垃圾收集有关的类似,比如 string 和 closure (以及后来增加的 thread )则不会带来太多的复杂度。 强调数据类型的复杂度,是关系到垃圾收集的过程。我们知道,lua 这类语言中,不存在 C 语言里的指针越界和内存泄露问题。但是,我不相信垃圾收集就是万能药,在不成熟或有疏漏的设计中,问题只是被隐藏起来了。 所以在 C 或 C++ 中,我们关注数据的内存布局,和内存管理;到了 lua 中,我们也应该关心数据何种情况下诞生,何种情况下消亡。怎样减少垃圾收集器的工作压力。后者并不比前者容易,因为前者往往会引起系统崩溃,给开发人员预警;而后者,表象可能仅仅是系统资源占用过大而已。不引起程序崩溃的失误才是最可怕的。 如果,有性能追求的程序员了解到,每次创建一个新的 table ,构造一个新的 closure ,用连接符连接一个新的 string ,都有新的对象诞生。哪怕它只是临时用几个 circle ,也会给事后的垃圾收集模块造成压力。那么,当他在设计上尽量减少这些事情的发生,且尽量维持着代码规模不至于过大。那么,稳定的系统自然而生。这也是我最近半个月用 lua 编程的感受。 语言,看似是软件设计中枝梢末节的部分。但是语言同样深刻的影响着设计师的思维方式。作为程序员,对单一语言过分依赖的时候,就应该引起自己的警觉,该试点新的思路了。 换个角度再写点别的。 最近很忙,而今天有时间写这么大一篇,纯属无奈。手头一个项目,我自己的部分都做完了。剩下的依赖其他同事一起工作,需要做一些通讯协议上的修正。不过今天是周末,我带团队的原则是,不到万不得已,绝不要求别人加班。写完今天最后一行代码前,已经想过了可以提前写的代码,能做的都做了,剩下的只能等周一继续。 把大项目拆分成独立的二进制模块,分配到不同的人来做。是我最为(也是唯一)认可的中型软件项目的合作开发模式。在游戏客户端这边,基本上是独立模块,留出极少的 C 接口;服务器那边则干脆做成一个个独立进程,之间用通讯协议来协同运行。 经历了太多事情,让我对源码级上的合作失去了信心。或许 XP 的结对编程会好一些,不过前几年尝试的经历让我感觉那样太累。还是一个人对着电脑做东西好。当然前提是个人能力要达到一定的程度,并对编程这件事有足够良性的态度,才能保证代码质量。 代码质量如何保证?我的私人药方是,把一切事情简单化,尽量把代码写短(保持每个独立源文件不超过 500 行),删掉和缩减一切不必要的东西。让 bug 无处发生,比小心的回避它们要容易的多。不行就重写,而不要过多调试。不要在一块代码上耽误太多时间,速战速决。如果花了太多时间去实现它,那么一定有设计问题。世界上有许多复杂的事情难以解决,但绝对不包括实现一个有特定需求的模块 :D 。 怎样高效的完成一个软件项目?选择最好的程序员,不要太多,不要觉得小题大作。把他们放在一起,在一两个月内完成它。如果做不到,比如找不到最好的程序员,只要你相信自己就是最好的,那么即使一个人单干也好过雇一大堆平庸的人去做。当然,再好的程序员也不能同时做两件事情。所以,设定好计划,一件事一件事的来。 程序员们总是高估计自己的能力,而低估问题的复杂度。在多个合作的项目中更为突出。一个人两周的工作,即使两个同样优秀的人一起干,也不会把工期缩短到一周(甚至加到 3 个人也做不到)。道理看上去大家都懂,但是事到临头还是会为多人合作的效率低下而懊恼。可惜,许多许多的现实项目,在不至于引发疲倦的工期内,靠一个人是写不完程序的。何况,像我所处的游戏开发行业内,一个项目不仅仅是靠程序实现。我们还是得面对合作开发这个问题。 |

Posted: 22 Mar 2008 12:20 AM CDT 现在市面上很多mmorpg都效仿了《魔兽世界》的设计,甚至连装备的设计也不例外,举个例子,当你进入现今任意一款mmorpg游戏,都可能会有80%的概率看到装备上被设定了品阶,然后你可能又有50%的概率会发现,这些品阶都如同《魔兽世界》那样被定义了几种颜色,大多都是白色(普通)、绿色(精制)、蓝色(稀有)、紫色(史诗),其每个品阶都比上一个品阶要好。 那么我们如何定义这些品阶之间的差异呢?既然一个品阶比一个品阶要好,那么它们要好多少呢?这些自然就成了数值设计者需要考虑的问题。今天我随意拿着魔兽世界的一段数据,进行了模糊的概念分析。 数据是我从多玩游戏网查到的,数据如下: 这些数据是《魔兽世界》所有普通单手斧的数据,将这些数据弄到excel表上之后,可以通过图表看到白色单手斧在随着物品等级增长时的成长路线:
尽管公式并不算是很精确,但是这种不精确我们完全可以在设计初期忽视掉,因为在实际设计的过程中,我们后期肯定是会对这些属性进行部分调整的。 其他的关于绿色、蓝色、紫色单手斧的成长,我这里就不一一列举了,大家有空的话可以自行研究,通过最后的模糊分析,基本可以了解魔兽世界关于物品品阶的设计。尽管魔兽世界是通过提升物品等级来达到装备品阶的提升效果,虽然这种方法较为科学,但是似乎国内的数值设计者很少有这么做的,不过没关系,我们排开物品等级不谈,直接对数据进行分析,不难看出,魔兽世界装备的品阶差异几乎是这样的:
普通装备和有品阶的装备之间的差异是很大的,这种差异在前期并不明显,因为玩家前期白装居多,特别是1-10级这个阶段的时候,而在后期这种差异则会慢慢的越来越明显,当到达70级时,白色装备和紫色装备的dps比率甚至能够达到1/3左右。为了使这种差异在等级上会有影响,因此黄色装备mod%的公式中加入了“与白色装备最小差异倍数”以及“与白色装备最大差异倍数”,“与白色装备最小差异倍数”指的是前期的差异倍数,而“与白色装备最大差异倍数”是后期差异倍数,通过这个公式,我们就能很容易的体现装备品阶差异度随等级的提升而提升。 |

If you remember, the original GC was one of the few modern games to come without copy protection, as apparently it inconvienenced real users and nobody else; and the sequal follows in it's tracks, with absolutely no copy protection whatsoever, which is brilliant for consumers who are fustrated at trying to work their way around the odd measures developers put in. The game is a rather complex space sim, with hints of both turn based systems and the real time stratergy we all know both in there.... I had a play and I've got to say, it was tough, but I did like it. The demo gives some tutorials and a 1 player random map with 90 mins of playtime, not bad for a demo. Check it out here. The response was fantastic and we received a ton of entries. Thus why it has taken us so damn long to review them all, then pick the winners, contact them, and secure all the paper work required by our lawyers. Welp… the winners are now selected and integrated with the upcoming Warhawk v1.3 update! Before we reveal the new designs, why don’t you take a gander at this brand new v1.3 trailer and get hyped up for the awesomeness that these new designs will be flying around in: The team was really impressed by the quality of the submissions. Many of you spent a lot of time designing really great stuff and it’s going to make a great addition to the game — aside form the fact that it’s just plain sweet to get your stuff in a game! Posted: 23 Mar 2008 10:33 AM CDT 如果想成为第一,就不能老是跟着别人的屁股后面走,尤其是在网游这种新兴高科技行业里面,竞争力和比较优势在很大程度上就是直接来自于技术。我是有理想的人,所以我确实想成为第一,能不能做到那就再说了,至少意愿是有的。技术主义者很傻很天真,但是纵观历史,推动发展的动力很大程度上都是来自于他们,说到底——为发展带来积极因素有什么不好的?技术主义者至少会是个实践者,实践了即使失败也有收获。

Yet suicide attacks happen as a response to foreign occupation, and civilian casualties - unavoidable in war - create new terrorists. If there are effective solutions to terrorism, they are more likely to be found in civil counter-terrorist operations and tangential diplomacy. Inequalities drive terrorism: to defeat terrorism, eliminate inequalities. Another mistake would be to blame the reckless invasion of Iraq solely upon the Bush administration. Certainly, they are culpable, but it's important to remember that the news services in the United States sold the story to the people. We all expect politicians to push their own agendas, but shouldn't we expect the media to provide a counterbalance to this? Journalists had choices in how to present the story, and they chose to focus on the terrible situation in Iraq, which evoked the sympathy of the people, making invasion seem morally acceptable. I contend the media had a duty to explore the question of whether or not invasion was justified - to consider the ethics of war - a duty that most prominent journalists abjectly failed. A "War on Terror" is easy to win - simply stop being afraid. As a native of the British Isles, I grew up with terrorism in the background of my life, mostly from the IRA, and this perhaps has made it seem less frightening to me: yes, I might be killed by a terror attack, but I am more likely to be killed in a car accident, die from a fatal disease, or (for that matter) to be suddenly vapourised in a meteor impact. The purpose of Outlands was to take a variety of different classic science fiction sources - including Aliens, Angel Station, Blade Runner, Dune, Outland, Wetware and Blake's 7 - and merge them into a melange that would present a coherent science fiction setting, in the way that Dungeons & Dragons did with fantasy sources. Oddly, while D&D is usually not criticised for incorporated Orcs, Outlands was criticised at release for including the Fremen (from Dune) as a playable race, which makes me wonder if people are more open to amalgam backgrounds in fantasy than in science fiction. Outlands is fairly mechanics heavy, and has a detailed character generation system that some players love (and play as a game in itself!) while others find it too complex and long. It's also the only game I know of which offers the possibility to play an animal species that has been artificially raised to sentience (with the possible exception of Paul Kidd's Albedo, but then, you can't play a human in Albedo!) Perhaps the most interesting part of the background is the capacity for an individual to take a copy of their personality engrams via a wetdrive and upload them onto drones, or leave a copy at a Neozen temple so that they can still be spoken to after death. My favourite mechanics are those for generating stellar systems (p108-114), which I created while studying Astrophysics at Manchester University, and might be the most realistic rules of their kind. Posted: 23 Mar 2008 05:49 AM CDT “不可思议迷宫”系列我真正算是“接触过”的只有《特鲁内克大冒险2》,而且是gba版,因为gba版有完美汉化版。这个游戏我打通过了百层迷宫,也拿到了一些珍贵道具,但这是建立在gba烧录卡可以备份存档的功能的基础上的,如果不能备份存档,想必我承受不了因为在迷宫倒下而导致所有道具全部丢失的打击。因此,对这个系列来说,我虽然有大致一些了解,但只能算是新手。
去年年底就注意到了nds《风来西林》会推出美版《Mystery Dungeon Shiren the

),如今美版真正出来了,我当然要尝试一下,这一尝试不得了,居然“中毒”了,周末在家玩了两天。
以前就听说虽然同属于“不可思议迷宫”系列,但“风来西林”这个分支比“特鲁内克大冒险”这个分支难,如今上手一试,果然不简单——不像“特鲁内克大冒险”还有一些比较短的迷宫练练手,而是一上来就走上了一条不归路——这是真正的“不归路”,因为如果你想回去的话,等级就会恢复为1,所有的道具也会全部清空,只能从头再来;如果你在路上不小心被怪物打倒,除非是利用救助系统等待其他玩家的救援,否则当然也是一样从头再来。
碰到这样大的挑战,以我的水平,几次攻关都理所当然地失败了,所以不停地重试,终于有一次运气好,打到了后面的“黄金城”,又跑到瀑布后面的洞窟里打倒了一只大螳螂,居然通关了……
当然,通关只是代表了这个游戏的真正开始,还有更多敌人、道具、迷宫在后面等着我,想起来就兴奋。在这里要感谢chunsoft居然会想到把这个日式风味十足的游戏推出美版(虽然封面比较美国化,但内容至少还是保持和日版一致的),可能它在美国不见得能有什么样的表现,但却让我这个以前因为语言的问题而没有接触过该系列的玩家第一次玩到了《风来西林》。 |

Great AudioSurf Song: Sidology Episode 3 Posted: 23 Mar 2008 02:56 AM CDT Okay, if you happen to be playing Audiosurf and would like a really killer (FREE!) musical piece for it, I recommend this hard-rock medley of old Commodore 64 game music by Machinae Supremacy (also known for making the soundtrack to the indie shooter Jets 'n Guns). Sidology Episode 3 - Apex Ultima 7 Minutes of high-speed downhill racing. My score was terrible. If you haven't played the IGF award-winning indie game Audiosurf yet - hey, the demo's free, and it's a CHEAP (and fun) indie game. Give it a whirl with your favorite music as tracks. But definitely try it with Sidology Episode 3. It may not create the most psychotic track of all music out there (I've seen some wild ones - like this one using the song from the most evil Guitar Hero track of all time...), but it's fun. ![]() |

Why? It's because we believe that third party support for Wii is dodgy because of developers not knowing how to make the best games for its audience, not because of the Wii consumers themselves. For this reason, we sound the trumpets to both support third party gaming on WIi and to encourage developers to do a better job. So today, let's take a look at the million sellers (and those that are so close that as if this writing it is all but certain that they will- nobody on this list has less than 850,000 units sold) that populate the Wii's third party roster. They are, in order of success: Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition Rayman Raving Rabbids Carnival Games Sonic and the Secret Rings Red Steel Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga MySims Let's break down the game genres: Mini-Game Compilations: 3 Action Adventure: 3 First Person Shooters: 1 Music/Rhythm Games: 1 Simulation: 1 Upon first glance, this list certainly does confirm the old suspicion that mini-games are the only thing that sell on Wii. However, note that tied for first place among the genres is action adventure. This is proof that this all important genre can and will sell on the system. Also worth noting is that each game has a compelling argument as to why it succeeded while other games failed: 1. They had a property that was unique to Wii (light sabre waggling in Lego Star Wars). 2. It was a Wii exclusive that played to the system's strengths (semi-on rails gameplay of Sonic and the Secret Rings). 3. Was a beloved "core gamer" IP that was brought over to the system: Resident Evil 4. Looking at the list overall, we can also pick out the following trends: 4/10 were exclusives. Rayman wasn't but it was released on Wii first. The minigame "games" on this list have a common thread... at least when you exclude Rayman. They feature activities that people enjoy in real life (but maybe lack the skill or time to do). I think this is part of Wii Sport's charm: in my experience the number of people who would enjoy bowling, for example, decreases when a dingy bowling alley is put into the equation. Ditto Carnival Games and its "carney avoidance." Other minigame failures on Wii can be partially blamed on the developer choosing non-sensical activities to simulate. A great example is EA's latest, Ninja Reflex. It looked promising, but when I found out that picking out flies in the air with chopsticks was supposed to be ninja training... well, let's just say those gaming dollars went elsewhere! Read. |
