I’m just getting into the planning stage of building my first CNC Router/Engraver based loosely on the book and plans of "Build Your Own CNC Machine" by Patrick Hood-Daniel and James Floyd Kelly.

Loosely, in that it will have a frame of MDF or Plywood, but with 16” ball screws and an Arduino based controller.

I’ve been looking at spindle types and I think I’m going to go with a cheap Chinese one from E-Bay. I have been working on the ball screws, cleaning them up and figuring out mounting and bearings, etc.

I know my build is on the low end, I planned it that way. It’s going to be, as the British would say, “Cheap and Cheerful.” This is just a fun build to learn about CNC and help me decide if I want to go bigger. I have a small machine shop and basic wood working tools, and enjoy using them. My little Vertical Mill(X2) and 7x x 14 lathe have been fun to use, but haven’t made me want to go bigger.

Anyone else on here in the Kingsport, TN area?

Hey Chuck,

It sounds like a fun project.  I hope you show your work here.  We can always give advice and encouragement.

Hey Chuck,
I think the Tri-Cities hacker space is out in your neck of the woods.
http://www.tcmakerspace.com/index.php/the-space/
Do you know about them?
I just looked at their website and they don't seem to be into cnc.
Still, it might be worth going to their open night on tuesdays.
That might be able to hook you up to people in you're area or (if you're not versed in Arduino) probably help you out if you get stuck on something.

I think we are largely from the Chicago area but this is a good site to find other goofballs building things in other areas of the world:
