Remember that wacky idea to make a drink coaster engraver/cutter we brainstormed at the June meeting? Well, I built it.

The idea was to build a small backpack portable, custom drink coaster fabricator.  I wanted to make something for the hardware happy hours events. I tried to get it as small as possible.

It is only about 1.5 coasters wide, 0.75 coasters deep and 1.25 coasters tall.

It works pretty well. It has 3.5 watt peak, 2.5 watt continuous laser module ($98).  It can engrave or cut through. The more complicated coaster on the right took about 2 minutes to cut.

It uses a super cheap 2 axis controller ($26) running Grbl 1.1f

It is mostly printed. The only parts besides the laser and controller I had to get were the o-ring drive 'wheels'

I left the back off this first one to speed up printing. The final one will have a back with some exhaust fans. I had the TR8x8 leadscrew. I think it would be more accessible if I switched that to a belt, but that requires quite a bit of redesign.

Very cool. What material are you making the coasters out of?

I bought coaster blanks at Amazon.

What are the specs/parameters for coaster blanks? Could they be made from 1/8" birch plywood, for example?

They are about 1.4mm (0.055") thick.  I might try some veneer.

4" square.

Coasty was a hit with the Popular Mechanics people at The Lodge.
