Opening lead -- S Q
Unlucky Louie's oldest daughter had gotten married over the weekend, and
he looked a little frazzled.
``A man spends his life keeping the wolf from the door,'' Louie sighed, `
`and then his daughter brings one home.''
Louie mismanaged a marriage of his own as today's East. He took the
ace of spades and led the king and then the queen of diamonds. West
signalled high for a continuation, but Louie couldn't oblige. When he led
a trump next, South drew trumps and took the rest, throwing his last two
diamonds on dummy's high clubs.
ABNORMAL PLAY
To beat the contract, Louie must lead the queen of diamonds first and then
the king. This abnormal play will wake up West; he'll overtake and lead
a third diamond, letting Louie ruff for the setting trick.
``So did the wedding go off without a hitch -- or did they end up married?
'' I asked.
``I was really proud of my little girl,'' Louie told me. ``When the
minister asked if she took the groom for richer or poorer, she said,
`For richer'.''
DAILY QUESTION
You hold: Q J 10 8 3 9 A 10 6 2 8 7 2
Your partner opens 1NT, and the next player passes, What do you say?
ANSWER
This hand is too strong to sign off but too weak to force to game. To
invite, start by bidding two clubs, the Stayman Convention. If partner
next bids two spades, your hand improves and you'll bid four spades.
If he bids two diamonds, denying a four-card major suit, or two hearts,
you'll bid two spades.
