An introduction to POE

News up to 2004-06-27.

Design and implementation of a homegrown mailing list.

Profiling Perl
How do you know what your Perl programs are spending their time doing? How do you know where to start optimizing slow code? The answer to both these questions is "profiling," and Simon Cozens looks at how it's done. [Perl.com]

This Week on Perl 6, Fortnight Ending 2004-06-21
Arrays and other classes go into the basic Parrot PMC hierarchy, and Dan finally embraces Unicode while perl6-language ... doesn't. [Perl.com]

Open Source Paradigm Shift
This article is based on a talk that I first gave at Warburg-Pincus' annual technology conference in May of 2003. Since then, I have delivered versions of the talk more than twenty times, at locations ranging from the O'Reilly Open Source Convention, the UK Unix User's Group, Microsoft Research in the UK, IBM Hursley, British Telecom, Red Hat's internal "all-hands" meeting, and BEA's eWorld conference. I finally wrote it down as an article for an upcoming book on open source,"Perspectives on Free and Open Source Software," edited by J. Feller, B. Fitzgerald, S. Hissam, and K. R. Lakhani and to be published by MIT Press in 2005. [O'Reilly Network]

Perl's Special Variables
Dave Cross goes back to basics to show how using Perl's special variables can tidy up file-handling code. [Perl.com]

The Evolution of Perl Email Handling
There are many modules on the CPAN for slicing and dicing email, and we're going to take a whistlestop tour of the major ones. We'll also concentrate on an effort started by myself, Richard Clamp, Simon Wistow, and others, called the Perl Email Project, to produce simple, efficient and accurate mail handling modules. [Perl.com]

The Mythical Man-Month Revisited
Fred Brooks' "The Mythical Man-Month" may be the classic text on professional software development. Almost 30 years later, which lessons have computing advances made obsolete and which lessons are still valid? Ed Willis explores issues raised by a careful re-reading. [ONLamp.com]

This Week on Perl 6, Fortnight Ending 2004-06-06
Parrot gets the beginnings of library dynamic loading, and Perl 6 gets a... periodic table? [Perl.com]

Spam Filtering with Sendmail Milters and Greylisting
With spam, viruses, worms, and trojan horses consuming an ever-increasing amount of mail traffic, mail filtering is more important than ever. So is mail server flexibility. Sendmail's milters allow administrators and programmers to control almost every step of the mail process. Emmanuel Dreyfus explains how to write a milter by demonstrating his anti-spam greylisting system. [ONLamp.com]

Web Testing with HTTP::Recorder
The HTTP::Recorder module is a brilliant new way of writing tests for web applications -- it works as a proxy, watching how you navigate around a site and then replays the browsing session to check that everything is what you expect. Its author, Linda Julien, explains how to start writing web site test suites. [Perl.com]

Return of Quiz of the Week
Mark-Jason Dominus's quiz of the week mailing list is back, and we bring you the questions and solutions for the past week's quizzes. [Perl.com]

Inside Mitch Kapor's World
Mitch Kapor has had a huge influence on the software world, being the founder of Lotus and a driving force behind 1-2-3. Now his Open Software Applications Foundation is working on Chandler, an open-source PIM written in Python. Steve Holden interviewed Mitch after the recent PyCon about his life and career, the OSAF, Chandler, open source, and Python. [ONLamp.com]

This Week on Perl 6, Week Ending 2004-05-23
Lots of documentation effort on the Parrot list this week, and some work on the Perl 6 compiler, while on the language list, magical new syntaces for filling hashes... [Perl.com]

Paul Graham on Hacking
Paul Graham is a hacker, a painter, and an essayist known as much for his thoughtful writings on spam, hacking, and Lisp as for creating the Arc programming language. In this interview with the O'Reilly Network, Paul discusses hacking, creativity, computer science education, and language design. Paul's collection of essays has just been released in a new book from O'Reilly, Hackers & Painters. [ONLamp.com]

An Interview with Allison Randal
Allison is President of the Perl Foundation, and project manager for Perl 6. What does that actually mean? We caught up with her to talk about the Foundation, YAPC, and the Perl 6 effort. [Perl.com]

Affrus: An OS X Perl IDE
Affrus is a new IDE from Late Nite Software; Simon puts it through its paces to see how it compares to Komodo and his beloved Unix editors. [Perl.com]

Inside the Homebrew Atari 2600 Scene
Despite console-company protestations to the contrary, emulators aren't only tools for copyright infringers. If it weren't for emulators, would the Atari 2600 homebrew scene be where it is today? "Wait, there's an Atari 2600 homebrew scene?" you ask. As Howard Wen explains, it exists, and new-school programmers are making some impressive games in the old-school style. [LinuxDevCenter.com]

This Week on Perl 6, Week Ending 2004-05-09
The native call interface raises questions on the internals list; Piers Cawley has the details on this and everything else from the Perl 6 effort. [Perl.com]

Building Testing Libraries
Save time, test more, and use what the CPAN has made available to enhance your development. Casey West demonstrates examples of good techniques when testing Perl-based software. [Perl.com]

This Week on Perl 6, Week Ending 2004-05-02
The internals list mulls over strings and multi-method dispatch, while Apocalypse 12 continues to intrigue and entertain the language list. [Perl.com]

Open Source in Africa
Open source software is good for the developing world. Not only is the price often right, but the openness offers nascent developers the chance to learn from their peers despite geographic and cultural distances. Kwindla Hultman Kramer recently attended the Africa Source conference, a gathering of free and open source software developers and fans. Here are his thoughts. [ONLamp.com]

Automated Web Photo Galleries with iPhoto and Perl
If iPhoto is working nicely as your digital shoebox, but you want to automate the process of creating web galleries for your own server, here's a nifty setup using Sendmail, MySQL, and Perl. Mike Schienle, who specializes in task automation for a living, shows you the system he designed for his wife, who is an avid photographer. [MacDevCenter.com]

Rapid Web Application Deployment with Maypole : Part 2
We use Maypole to turn last week's product catalogue into a complete web commerce application. [Perl.com]

This Week on Perl 6, Week Ending 2004-04-25
Now that Apocalypse 12 is out, what do the Perl 6 developers think about it? Piers has all the details... [Perl.com]

Profiling LAMP Applications with Apache's Blackbox Logs
Benchmarking LAMP sites can be tricky; how do you know which pages or applications need tuning? Fortunately, you can easily tune your Apache logs to provide more useful profiling information. Chris Josephes explains a Blackbox log format for Apache httpd. [ONLamp.com]

This Fortnight on Perl 6, Weeks Ending 2004-04-18
Parrot gains the beginnings of some Unicode support, causing much fallout; meanwhile, there's a fight over who gets the backtick operator, and what Perl 6 does to recognize and run Perl 5 code. [Perl.com]
