To the NELL Team

I am a first year PhD student at Imperial College London, Department of Computing. I am interested in using a knowledge graph as part of my research project.  More specifically I would like to work with a knowledge graph architecture that ingests web-based data (unstructured text) and extracts triples of interest.  Initially I would like to apply this to mapping supply chains for products such as laptops and cars so would be defining relations for extraction such as: componentOf, manufacturerOf, locatedIn. And entities for extraction such as products, manufacturers and nations.

I understand that your architecture is too involved to be simply downloaded. Given my need to define specific relations and entities for extraction from web-data, what would you advice with respect to using NELL? Would this be possible/are you willing to explore the possibilities with me?

Based on this google group alone it seems you get many such approaches, but I would like the opportunity to discuss options with a member of your team to see if we can identify a collaboration of mutual benefit.

Many thanks for your time.
Helen

to NELL: Never-Ending Language Learner
Hi Helen,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner -- the various forces of the
Summer seem to have been on the mount. It is true that making NELL itself
generally available as a system is beyond our capacity to try to support.
However, we're always open to exploring possibibilities for collaboration,
particuarly when the initial steps can be taken at reasonably low cost.

For instance, we're always happy to expand NELL's ontology to include
things of interest to others (and your particular kind of examples are one
of the areas of expansion I personally have been wanting to get in there
without ever having had the spare time to make it hapen.) Then everybody
gets the benefit of the new learning domains, and your domain of interest
benefits from the better defined decision boundary, semantically, of a
system simultaneously learning what falls outside of that domain.

Of course that's kind of a small sort of thing to offer, and you probably
have more elaborate questions or ideas in mind. Please feel free to email
me directly if you'd rather get into further detail that way.

Hi Bryan,
how are you?
Everything is fine here! :-)
This is just to recall that (as you know) Lucas (and two other undergrad students from our lab, in Brazil) have constantly added new relations to NELL. Thus, if you need any help on adding new relations (and categories) to NELL's ontology, just let us know and we'll be very happy to help with that! :-)

Best,
Estevam.
