Abstract

Object-oriented programming languages, notably Java, are gaining greater
acceptance because of their software engineering benefits, but are not yet
achieving high performance.

Our experiments show that a significant source of the performance gap is
due to poor memory behavior. Unfortunately, modern and future processors
are only exacerbating the impact of poor memory behavior. We propose an
integrated attack on this problem that incorporates new compiler analyses
with both static and dynamic optimizations, profile feedback, and dynamic
on-the-fly optimizations including adaptive garbage collection algorithms.
We present preliminary results for class based object ordering and object
prefetching which improve the performance of a collection of Java
programs.

Bio

Kathryn S. McKinley is an Associate Professor at the University of
Massachusetts. She received her PhD from Rice University in 1992. Her
research interests include compilers with a particular focus on memory
hierarchy, high performance, and program analysis; architecture; parallel
and distributed computing; and information retrieval. She received an NSF
CAREER Award, 1996-2000, a Texas Institute for Computation and Applied
Mathematics (TICAM) Visitor Fellowship, 1999-2000, a Chateaubriand
Scholarship for the Exact Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 1992, and a
DARPA/NASA Assistantship in Parallel Processing, 1991. She has served
on over 20 program committees, and as the Treasurer/Secretary for the
ACM Special Interest Group on Programming Languages (SIGPLAN,
1999-2001). She has served twice as a mentor in the CRA Distributed
Mentor Program for Woman, and twice spoken at the CRA Academic
Careers for Women conference. She has supervised 3 PhD degrees, and
published over 30 refereed articles in conferences, journals, and books.
