After much negotiation and discussion the following is the
situation on the annual December outage:

Power will NOT be removed from Hamerschlag Hall at all at this
time.

Power WILL be removed from Cyert Hall from 4a.m. until roughly
4p.m. (this usually goes a couple of hours longer) on December
29th, 2000. This is a different date than originally announced so
you should mark your calendars accordingly. This date is a
university holiday, chosen to minimize impact on users.

While Hamerschlag will not lose electricity, the outage in
Cyert Hall will effect users. During this time AFS will be down,
so UNIX (including LINUX) logins will not be possible. In
addition, access to AFS will be limited or non-existent.

The Alpha machine cluster will be off-line for the entire time,
probably actually beginning the night before. The compute
clusters owned by CEDA (including Elvis, heavyside, belushi,
etc) will be off-line. Central.cit.cmu.edu will be off-line.
Henry.ece.cmu.edu will be off-line. For some or all of the
day our primary DNS server will be off-line, making normal
access to remote machines extremely slow. Of course, as
Andrew will be down, access to the Internet will be limited
or non-existent during this time. In the past some UNIX machines
have had to be rebooted after AFS returns, so you may want
to be aware that things may not be quite back to normal when
you return.

In summary, you should make the assumption that no computing
services will be available on December 29. If you have
questions about this date, please feel free to address them
to gr...@ece.cmu.edu. We apologize for the inconvenience
that this outage brings, but note that it is a requirement to
retain insurance on the equipment located in Cyert Hall.
