Hi guys,

How are you planing to pay first semester tution fee ?

Options which I have come across till now are:

DD/Wire transfer

I guess, wire transfer needs your andrew id.

Pls share your ideas/plan?

Cheers

You can look_up your Andrew_ID @ :
http://www.cmu.edu/directory/

- Thanks Satish for the Info.

student_ID would still take some time.

I still feel wire transfer is a better option as it is simple, faster
& secure. Any reasons for preferring DD over Wire Transfer?

Cheers!

here it goes:

there are a couple of options: TMS for monthly payment, wire thru pnc
bank account, wire directly to cmu, demand draft, check or e-check
from ur US bank account...(http://www.cmu.edu/hub/sa/sa_payment.html)

the option that most students choose so far is wire directly to cmu..
2 reasons:
- foreign wire transfer takes time about 2 weeks
- many of us take loans..so the bank from which u hav taken loan can
wire transfer directly to cmu for u..

Direct wire option to cmu account:
here is the site for details on swift number etc -> http://www.cmu.edu/hub/sa/sa_wire.html

- U need to hav ur student id..this will be emailed to us soon...so 15
to 20 days before fees deadline which i believe is aug 15, u shud
request for wire transfer
- check with ur bank on the docs they need for wire transfer, such as
i20 etc.
- u can transfer ur fees plus additinal amt for the health insurance
plus for ur living to cmu directly..they will send u a check of xcess
amt to ur new apt or wil wait til u get an apt and then send it to
u...u wil deposit that check to ur pnc account..
- for second sem fees u cud do the same..direct transfer to cmu...
- u wil be openng a pnc account when u reach college..in case of extra
transfers during the course of study..ur bank can transfer to ur pnc
account..pnc allows one free wire transfer in a month i guess..u can
check with the pnc accountant for more details..

the banks i know that do wire transfer are idbi and hdfc..i guess
others do too..

thanks

That was quite informative Kavita!
I just checked with my friend at CMU , this is what she had to say:

- Wire Transfer is the best & preferred option.
- It takes 3 business days to reflect in the account (Indian Banks -
PNC) or (Indian Banks - CMU).
- The amount you need to transfer is (Tuition + health Insurance +
Extra Charges) - (Merit Scholarship/sem -if any)

So for MISM Fall'09 it works out to 18000 + 968 + 201 = 19169$
You can deduct your respective scholarship amounts and transfer the
amount to CMU.
Eg: for 3k scholarship/sem you need to wire 16169$

And in case you transfer any extra sum to the Student account , it
remains in your student account which can be utilized for further
sems.
Eg: If you transfer 20000$ instead of 19169$ , the difference would be
carried in your student account which can be used for 2nd sem.

@Sneha,I hope this answers your query.

Cheers!

DD takes around 25 days to reflect.
Go in for DD only in case your bank doesnot really understand the
concept of Wire Transfer, Which is true in most of our cases :)
Because there are Banks which still issue only Demand Drafts for
Foreign Universities , if so , then you would have to go in for DD.
Else Wire Transfer is the best and safest way , just checked with HDFC
Bank , and the Manager confirmed that they have a flat 500 Rs.
transfer charge for International Wire Transfers. DD would cost you
almost the same.

Cheers!

But the thing is we still dont have Student_ID . And I am not sure when its gonna reach !

This is response whichj i got from chris for query regarding student id number:
=========
Hi Ankit,

Your id number is listed on your Fall invoice which was mailed to you yesterday.  It begins with 7000.  We are not permitted to send id numbers thru e-mail; otherwise, I would send it to you.

Christopher Mattis

So, Student id might take some time to reach to our physical address.

If you know your student id then you can access your andrew account. Because your password is first seven digits of your studentid. I am able to access mine ......

I talked to ICICI bank today and they told me the time draft takes to encash depends on the beneficiary bank and the time draft reaches us. So it can take upto 21 days and sometimes less also for example Maddy's 5 days principle.Anywys they are themselves confused :)
We cant comment on the duration of encashment.

About loans, i have a loan with bank of baroda and this is what my cousin(Manager there) told me : We prefer to do a wire transfer as compared to demand draft coz there are less hassles.I guess premier banks like SBI, ICICI , Canara wil definately have a provision of wire transfer. ICICI and SBi have i know for sure.
So dont worry. And generally in loans ur parents will be co borrower with u, so just intimate them ur relevant details and they can inform the bank on wire transfer details.

Usefulness of Draft :
If the money is in ur bank account and its not a joint account. Then u are left with no other option than to carry draft and pray that the encashment happens before 3rd of sept(10 days after classes begin)
Usefulness of Wire transfer :
If ur parents are paying for first sem fees / u have a loan then u can pass the relevant details to them once u reach there and get the wire transfer done.
I read somewhere that wire transfer will take 2 weeks for foreign banks. This is a misconception. It doesnt take more than 2-3 days.
Infact in worst scenario it will take 3 days.

The question now is whether we will get student id during our stay here or once we reach there:)
Whatever happens keep 4 days in buffer to get the draft done(in case u have money in ur own account) and keep a watch on exchange rate. Its increasing everyday.

I guess once we reach there then the 250$ will also come to play that we paid as enrollment fees. Not sure about it.
But the basic fees will 19169- schol/sem as Sunil quoted.

Neeraj

Just re-verified with Chris & the only change seems to be in the
**Estimated fees which is increased by 8$ , so now the estimated fees
is $209 instead of $201. Rest remains the same. Please find the
excerpt of the mail below , which answers all our queries regarding
payment of tuition:

Also just an update , when you are wiring $19,177 do keep in mind to
add the transaction charges as well with the transaction amount.Wire
transfer charges are debited from the transaction amount and not the
source account from where it is debited. So , confirm the wire
transfer charges from your bank (The charges vary for different
banks).
So the amount you are transferring should be,

($19777 - ($scholarship)) + Wire Transfer Charges.

Cheers!

Folks,
Spoke to Christopher yesterday. Here are the set of details, I enquired about. I told him that we need student id beforehand to do wire transfer and to prevent late payment fees. He told me that the Hub cant do anything about it. Ideally heinz school should have mailed this to you earlier as it can be only given to you in person or through invoice stating your appicable payment. He told me he will have a word with Katy regarding it. But more or less looking at the response mail below I have a strong feeling that we wont be getting our student id before we leave.
So my suggestion to people who are in similar state as mine is prepare to carry a draft. Late payment fee, if we are unfortunate enough will be 150$. So if you are spending money in range of a million rupees on first sememster, i guess another 7.5k shouldnt add to the woe.

PS : Make sure your draft is addressed to Carnegie Mellon and there is no spelling mistake. I came to know someone's draft was rejected last year coz of spelling mistake.

Cheers,
Neeraj

Hi Neeraj,

I just wanted to respond to your e-mail so you can have what we spoke about in writing.  Here are the answers to your questions:

  1. Your draft should be made payable to Carnegie Mellon.
  2. You will not be assessed a late payment fee if your payment is received before 4 September.
  3. The amount of the late payment fee is $150.
  4. Heinz College will be mailing Andrew ids to students next week.

I hope this information is helpful.

Hi Christopher,

I am an international student coming to CMU for MISM this fall.I hail from India.

This is my second mail to you. I even tried reaching on your phone but went to your voice mail

I have some queries regarding wire and demand draft transfer of fees to CMU

 a) In case I make a draft for payment, It has to be in favor of "Carnegie Mellon"  and nothing else. Please Confirm?

 b) My course commenses from 11 August, 2009.However the classes start from 24 Aug, 2009.So the draft encashed before 3rd of September(10 days after classes start) will not create any hassles? Please confirm.

 c) What is the late payment fees if the draft takes more time than 3rd of September to encash?

Note :These drafts take 25 days time to be encashed.

 d) I need my student ID to do wire transfer. When will i get it? Normal airmail takes lot of time. Can it be couriered to me through UPS?

I will be obliged if you answer. I am using my personal savings to do 1st semester payments. After leaving the country it will be impossible for me to do wire transfer and demand draft will be the only option. So I will need the student id beforehad to do wire transfer.

@Neeraj , just curious, you can give all the details required for the
wire transfer to your Bank before you leave.
As soon as you get your student_ID , you can instruct your Bank in
India or your folks back here to initiate the transfer.
Simple , isnt it?
why do you wanna keep yourself bounded to the 25 day timeframe for the
DD to encash , when wire transfer can do it for you in max 3 business
days after you get your student_ID !
As the wise man says : When you have the technology , use it! ;)

Cheers!

@Sneha

I dont think there is a cap on the amount of DD you can carry ,
especially if it mentions your University's name on it.You anyways
carry your i20 with you which complies to the amount mentioned in the
DD.
I had a friend in UC Berkeley who carried a DD which had almost double
CMU's tuition inked on it :-) , so in that case we are safe.

Cheers!
