Hello everyone in this group. Nice to see some progress in this group
with the first post from Kaushik. Thanx Kaushik :). I wanted to know
if anyone of you have received their I20 Documents or Andrew Id's or
heard of anyone who have received them ? Because, as I have heard from
pple out here we really need to register for the courses as early as
possible to avoid being in the waiting list and we can register only
when we have our andrew Id's.

Hi Neha ! great initiative to start this group - Good job !
I am still waiting for my I - 20 Documents. As regards the Andrew Ids
u will have to be more patient, coz based on the comments in the CMU
ECE thread in the CMU 2008 community, the IDs will be generated not
before June Mid types ! :) So let us worry about the I-20 and Visas
now... the IDs will come... Meanwhile I would suggest researching all
subjects/asking seniors you know who have taken a certain course etc
etc - and share that with the group so that we can all know what
course to take based on each one's interest !

Cheers

Thanx a lot Ram for this information regarding andrew Id's. Regarding
I20, I heard people have already started receiving them so I think
we'll also hear from them maximum within 2 weeks or so. As far as visa
is concerned getting a visa for CMU is not a problem. CMU has had a
lot of success in bringing students from outside. As long as u have
sufficient proof of funding it should be fine and I think you should
take your visa interviews only in June-July. Taking ur interview very
early can also cause some problems. About the courses this link should
be useful http://www.ece.cmu.edu/graduate/masters/requirements.html
which says 96 credits are required. Out of which 12-15 can be from
project another 12 can be from an undergrad course and 48 credits i.e
4 courses should be from ECE approved course list. Rest 2 courses can
be frm any dept u like taking care of constraints.

Has anyone got their I-20s yet? Should I begin worrying about the fact
that it's past their stipulated 4 weeks within which we should have
received our I-20s?

Has anyone already fixed up their appointments for the visas? I hear
we'll run out of slots if we wait too long.

@neha: Aren't we suposed to contact our academic advisors once we get
there concerning our courses? That's the impression I got from the
admit letter.

@Zach: A few people have already got their I-20s but I don't think
that should worry others.
I talked to Tara Moe about time line for I-20s, she said that ECE
dept. recently updated OIE (Office of International Education) about
all the admitted candidates so hopefully OIE will now soon issue the
I-20s.

About the course registration, yes you are right Zach that we do need
to consult our academic advisors
before registering but that mostly ends up being a formality. So
mostly we ourselves should plan our
course work and register for the courses (some courses will probably
get filled up soon, much before we actually meet advisors).
Its preferable that we register a few back-up courses and drop a few
courses after incorporating advisor's suggestion at a later stage.

I have heard that unless you work on some project with advisors, they
are mostly not that interested in your coursework etc.
Besides you will better know which areas you want to explore in or
which course will be more suitable
or more relevant to you. As long as you you are able to fulfill the
ECE requirement for courses you should be fine.

thanks a lot.. makes things so much easier to keep track of..

i just got a mail informing me that my i-20 has been sent. i suppose
they'll send us our email ids soon, and then we can log into the cmu
site and select our courses. you should get it soon too..

@Neha..i haven't heard anything,im still in denial of even having got
in.

is it time to have a panic attack, yet?
and are you senior grad or just really really (really) early?

@Neha - Nope even I havent heard anything abt my I20s , though it is
almost 5 weeks since they received my documents.

@Prashanth: macha, even I dint get the I20 yet da... U dont need to
panic YET though... check out the thread abt not receiving their I20
yet on the CMU 2008 community started last year, people who sent their
docs in April first week, sometimes got their I20s only in First or
second week of June.. almost 9-10 weeks.. I guess they are just VERY
busy... no need to panic yet !

Cheers
Ram

@ Neha: oops.. completely blindsided by that one, haha

@ Ram: you're from chennai too, i take it? only chennaiites say
"macha", macha :)

and finally @prashanth: you want to just go ahead and fix up an
appointment for the visa? do you think that's prudent? i'm wondering
if it will make sense, because they'll certainly give us our i-20s by
mid june.. will have to look into that a bit.. on a different note, i
got a book i should show you sometime.. it's on cmu, but pretty funny
(read: informative)

@ Prashanth: I don't think you need to panic, last year too as Ram said some people received their I20's by mid june. It's just that OIE is too busy issuing hundreds of I20's for various departments and also ECE department was a little late in submitting information in SIS(Student Information System) so it getting delayed. You can call Tara Moe and ask her to make a document request on your behalf, that might accelerate the process.

No I am not a senior grad student, I just completed my B.Tech from DCE(Delhi College of Engineering) in 2008. Came here in Jan '09 as a dependent on F2 visa. So like the rest of you I too have to get my I20 and a F1 visa.

@ Ram : yes you are right,  you too can get a document request done thought that might not be necessary because I think they have started processing ECE I20's. I just heard from them today.

@Zak: what?! you got the amazing adventures of scratch an word??
oh wait...thats not out yet
(*monsaults into a volcano at the do you think thats 'prudent' part)
yes i think it's a good idea to book it.
if you would stop studying,we could.

@Neha: i already called Tara Moe once before
she said: you know there's a big cultural gap,and the phones line's so
bad.
she meant: you're speaking too fast and i dont understand your
(non-existent) accent.

so that ended in disaster (i.e. me laughing into the receiver at her
reaction)

@Ram: thanks.guess i dont need the xanax JUST yet.
...yes im joking.

Hi all..

Me too got my andrew id a couple of days back.. :)

The mail I got says that a faculty advisor will be assigned shortly. Anybody there who has already been assigned one..?? btw what are u guys planning to do abt that course registration thing. From what I ve heard, many courses out there are not in reality the ones we perceive to mean. So the best thing to do would be to register for the appropriate courses after we go there and discuss our academic interests with our faculty advisor.

Thanks,
Aaditya
