Marie Hanamura (Benio Hanamura en VO) est une jeune fille vivant au Japon du début du 20ème siècle. C'est un véritable garçon manqué auquel son père a appris tous les rudiments des arts martiaux. La jeune fille cherche absolument à s'éloigner des traditions de l'époque (qui l'obligent à se marier avec un homme qu'on aura choisi pour elle) car elle désire mener sa vie selon son désir, ce qui ne manque pas d'étonner, voire de consterner son entourage, moins "moderne" qu'elle.
Pourtant, malgré ses rêves de modernité, on la fiance de force à Marc 1erJuin (Shinobu IJuin) en raison d'un vieil accord entre la famille Hanamura et la famille 1erJuin. En effet, la grand-mère de Marc devait épouser le grand-père de Marie mais celui-ci décéda à la guerre et le projet fut abandonné. La génération suivante n'ayant vu naître que des garçons, c'est donc Marie et Marc qui doivent se marier pour réaliser le rêve de la comtesse 1erJuin. Mais Marie, bien qu'attirée par Marc, refuse qu'on lui impose son mari et fait tout pour déplaire à la famille de son fiancé, avec l'aide de Frédéric (Ranmaru Fujieda), son ami d'enfance comédien de Kabuki (théâtre traditionnel japonais où les hommes jouent des rôles féminins) et de Charlie Lefort (Ushigorou), un conducteur de pousse-pousse (amateur d'alcool comme Marie !)
Malgré tous ses efforts pour paraître la plus mauvaise épouse de tout le Japon, Marie se fait adopter par la famille de Marc. De plus, au fil du temps, elle finit par accepter son amour pour le jeune homme. Malheureusement, suite à une bourde de Marie, Marc est envoyé à la guerre en Russie où il finit par être porté disparu. La jeune femme est effondrée et se sentant responsable, elle décide de rester veuve toute sa vie. Néanmoins, elle doit se mettre en quête de petits boulots pour nourrir sa belle famille et envisage même d'être geisha ! Finalement, elle se fera engager dans un journal tenu par Tôsai, un rédacteur allergique aux femmes !Quelques temps après, un jeune couple russe s'installe dans la ville où vit Marie. Et qu'elle n'est pas la surprise de la jeune fille lorsqu'elle s'aperçoit que Sasha, le fiancé de Laliza (Larissa Mihailov), est le sosie de Marc ! Se pourrait-il qu'il s'agisse d'une seule et même personne ?
