The best nine-ball players from Team Europe and Team USA go head to head again across four days at Alexandra Palace; Europe are the current holders after last year's 11-7 win in Las Vegas; Watch the 2023 Mosconi Cup live on Sports from 6.30pm on Wednesday, December 6

The Mosconi Cup returns to London’s iconic Alexandra Palace from December 6-9 for its 30th anniversary edition as the defending champions Europe host the USA in nineball pool’s hottest rivalry.

Following their successful exploits away from home at Bally’s Las Vegas last time around, an unchanged European side attempt to clinch the bragging rights for a fourth consecutive year in front of almost 3,000 fans in the British capital.

Germany’s Ralph Eckert makes his debut as the European captain and selected Albin Ouschan and Joshua Filler, the MVP last year, as his wildcards after Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, David Alcaide and Jayson Shaw qualified via the world rankings.

Jeremy Jones, meanwhile, has two American rookies on his team as Fedor Gorst and Shane Wolford feature alongside Tyler Styer and stalwarts Shane van Boening and Skyler Woodward.

What is the Mosconi Cup?

In a similar manner to golf's Ryder Cup, the Mosconi Cup - named after American pool icon Willie Mosconi - brings together the best nine-ball pool players from Europe and the USA to compete against each other in a four-day long battle for supremacy.

This year's tournament marks the 30th edition of the event, which began in 1994 at the Roller Bowl in Romford and included snooker greats Steve Davis and Jimmy White as part of the eight-player European team.

Europe have won 11 of the last 13 editions of the famous tournament, with Hanoi Open champion Jayson Shaw being named the MVP in two of those, although the Americans did triumph at Ally Pally five years ago.

Gorst, who was sitting No 2 in Europe's Race to the Mosconi Cup standings prior to his switch of allegiance, won the 2019 World Nine-ball Championship and his performances this year have ensured he will be making his debut for the Americans in the clash between the best players from Europe and across the Atlantic.

What is the format?

The format of the Mosconi Cup has varied throughout the years, but the current format sees each side with a non-playing captain and five players, including a playing vice-captain, competing in singles, doubles and team matches across four days.

Three players automatically qualify for their teams through the Race to the Mosconi Cup standings, calculated on their performances on the World Nineball Tour throughout the year, with the other two places being filled by wildcard picks by the respective captains.

The $375,000 event begins in traditional fashion with the teams match, which the USA have won on four successive occasions, before two doubles matches and a sole singles match take place on the opening day.

One to watch: Ranked No 5 in the world and a two-time Mosconi Cup Most Valuable Player, Scotland's Jayson Shaw will surely be one of the key players for Europe if they are to retain the trophy this year.

The 33-year-old claimed his first Nineball World Tour tournament win in October too as he beat Europe team-mate Albin Ouschan 13-12 in an epic final to be crowned the first Hanoi Open champion, celebrating in equally spectacular style.

More power has been restored for the respective captains this year as the fans’ choice matches have been scrapped, while the same doubles partners cannot be selected twice and a captain’s pick will come into force should scores be level at 10-10 on the final day.

All matches will be race-to-five racks, alternate break and be played in accordance with the World Nineball Tour rules, with the winning team receiving an increased $40,000 per player and captain.

Coverage will be shown via Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland as well as DAZN in the USA and other territories, with Karl Boyes and Scott Frost providing punditry. A full list of broadcasters can be found here.

The Press Conference will take place from 12.30pm on Tuesday, December 5 at the Londesborough Room at Alexandra Palace. Team Europe has won 13 of the last 16 Mosconi Cups overall, which includes 12 wins by at least three points. They are now on European soil in London, so with a raucous crowd behind them, backing Team Europe to win by at least three points will be the best of our Mosconi Cup 2023 predictions@Thanks
