Dr. KT Ajmal, a renowned Unani doctor from India, is popular from south to north in India as well as in the United Arab Emirates. Graduated from the University of Pune in 1992 with high rank, Dr. Ajmal now heads the well-known Unani Hospital & Research Centre in Calicut
Dr. Ajmal (BUMS, MD), who also got a license to practice in the United Arab Emirates, had worked as government Unani medical officer in Kerala in the past.
Collection of ancient Unani manuscripts and books is a passion for Dr. Ajmal who travels from Kerala to Delhi to Hydrabad to collect such manuscripts.
“I have more than 12 rare manuscripts with me, says Dr. Ajmal. “This will be helpful for me to continue my research in Unani,” he added.
“I want to write books on Unani treatment which will be useful for next generation, he told gulf daily mail.com
He also heads manufacturing and marketing of several rare Unani medicines. The GMP certified company, Hermes Unani Herbal Pharmaceutical Ltd, produces more than 265 products under his leadership. He has developed more than 100 Unani patent medicines that received wide appreciation from different segment.
“We produce Unani medicines and body-friendly herbal products which are based on time tested methods included in Greek, Arabic and Persian manuscripts” he added.
“In Unani, great reliance is placed on ‘medicatrix nature power’ and the medicines help the body to regain the power to an optimum level and thereby restore humoral balance. Unani diagnoses a disease through Nabz (Pulse), Baul (Urine) and Baraz (stool),” says Dr. Ajmal.
Unani has laid down six essential pre-requisites known as “asbab-e-Sitta Zarooriya” or air, food and drinks, bodily movement and repose, psychic movement and repose, sleep and wakefulness, and finally excretion and retention for the prevention of diseases. It emphasizes the a good environment beside clean water, food and air.
Currently his hospital, Calicut Unani Hospital & Research Centre, is one of the most happening place in south India. They conduct regular CME and ROTP (Reorientation Program) for government and non-government Unani doctors. In addition, the hospital also conduct Unani regimental training courses like -cupping leeching and massage.
History of Unani Medicine:
The Unani system of medicine owes its origin to the Greeks. Hippocrates, the Greek Philosopher – Physician who lived during BC 460-377, freed medicine from the clutches of magic and superstition and made it into a science. He advocated that disease was a natural phenomenon and its symptoms were the reactions of the body to the disease. He said that the chief function of the physician was to aid the natural forces of the body. He was the first physician to introduce the method of taking medical histories. His chief contribution to medicine is the humoral theory, the basis of Unani. Later, several other Greek scholars developed the system, and of them Galen who lived during 131-210 A.D, and Arab Physicians like Rhazes and Avicenna made significant contributions, and as a result, it became a full-fledged system of medicine.
The Unani system has along and impressive record in India. It was introduced in India around 10th century A D with the spread of Islamic civilization. Now Unanipathy has become a part of Indian system of Medicine and India is one of leading countries so far as its practice is concerned. It is very much similar to our Ayurveda. In India Unani medicine was chiefly propagated by Freedom fighter and Unani scholar Hakeem Ajmal Khan.
Unanipathy has shown remarkable results in curing diseases like Arthritis, Leucoderma, Jaundice, Bronchial Asthma, Filariasis and several other acute and chronic diseases where other systems do not give the desired level of positive response. The Unani system is a secular system in character and is popular among the masses.
Dr. Ajmal often conducts free lectures on the importance of Unani treatment and medical camps across the state. He also serves as the chairman of Unani Science Academy, president of All Kerala Unani Medical Practitioners Association and chief editor of Al Hakeem Unani Magazine. Dr. Ajmal, who is also the founder and chairperson of Kerala Unani Development Board frequently attends various national and international conferences to submit research papers
