Upgrade to the new version CMPMVS v0.6.0

New version v0.6.0 of CMPMVS binary is available at:

Changes:
- several bugs have been detected and removed
- added possibility to reconstruct unlimited large scenes in highest possible level of detail see ini\README.txt
- added possibility to simplify mesh into choosen number of triangles
- added possibility to create new mesh with one texture file (merge texture files)
- added possibility for beta testing of the first version of our final mesh refinement step (still in developement)
- added possibility for testing experimental version of better texturing approach (still in developement)
- added possibility to generate georeferenced DEM and ortoPhoto
- more parameters described

Hi Gianluca,

I would recommend:

 

1. NVIDIA GPU GeForce GTX 285 and stronger. You must see the "CUDA Cores" and "Standard Memory Config" parameters in the specification. I recommend at least 240 cuda cores and at least 1GB of Standard Memory Config. I thing that any of these: GTX 650,660,670,680,690 should be OK.

2. At least 12GB of RAM

3. I have "Intel® Core™ i7-940" on my old machine and it works OK. So I assume any stronger CPU should be OK.

4. I recommend at least 1TB of HDD.

A detail: do you see any advantage in a more expensive Quadro graphic card?

Or, putting it the other way round, for the same budget would you buy a Quadro or a GeForce? It is well known that a GeForce is much cheeper than a Quadro with almost the same hardware, but the Quadro comes with more "professional" and optimized drives. So for the same price you could have a much better hardware choosing the GeForce...

Hi andrea,

as far as I am informed correctly, the optimized drivers for Quadro GPUs are only benefitial if the software specifically makes use of them. So professional software like AutoCAD, 3D Studio Max etc. have been optimized for better performance when using a Quadro GPU. Other 3D software, like Blender, on other hand haven't been optimized, so there is hardly a difference to GTX GPUs. Some features have been crippled on the GTX GPUs, like OpenGL double sided lighting, so they don't outperform the professional cards. Other features, like OpenGL stereo is completely deactivated on GTX.

Another issue is single and double precision performance. As far as I understood from another thread, CMPMVS uses single precision, so this is not so important. But Nvidia crippled double-precision perfomance on both GTX and Quadro cards, so their Tesla cards sell better.

I bet Michal will soon either confirm or correct me, but I do not think that CMPMVS makes use of the special drivers (at least I would not know what for). 

So for the same price, you get a much faster, more powerful card when going for a GTX. If you are the GTX just for this type of computation, I'd recommend a GTX 580 with 3GB of VRAM (521 CUDA cores). In comparison, for a little bit more money you'd get a Quadro 4000 with 2GB VRAM and 256 CUDA cores. It just depends on if you need the extra functions or if you use software which has been optimized for usage with a Quadro card.

I’m not developing the CMPMVS since 2013.

 

We have created a start-up called Capturing Reality and developed RealityCapture software from scatch. It is ~50 times faster than the CMPMVS and produce much better and much higher quality results. It is complete solution including alignment, meshing, coloring/texturing, ortho-projections, geo-referencing it produces complete and connected meshes without seams. It allows you to reconstruct also laser-scans together with images automatically etc.
