Revolutionary and controversial, Richard Wagner is one of the
most hotly debated figures in all of music. This hour, William
Berger, author of "Wagner without Fear," joins us to demonstrate
why Wagner's music has become so ingrained in our culture.
We'll hear the gorgeous quintet from Act Three of the opera "The
Meistersingers of Nuremburg," performed by singers Karita
Mattila (KAH-ree-tah MAH-tee-lah), Jose (joh-ZAY) van Dam, Ben
Heppner, Herbert Lippert (HAIR-bairt LEE-pairt) and Iris
Vermillion, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and conductor Georg
Solti (JOHJ SHOHL-tee) (Decca 452 606-2). Daniel Barenboim
conducts the Bayreuth (BEYE-royt) Festival Orchestra in the
slowly-unfolding opening of "Rheingold," which brings to mind
new-age music (Teldec 4509-97906-2). And Barenboim conducts the
Berlin Philharmonic in the harmonically daring opening moments
of the opera "Tristan and Isolde," with its famous "Tristan"
chord (4509-94568-2). 19:40

HOUR = 1 SEGMENT = B1
How Wagner came to write operas: William Berger guides us
through some of Wagner's early operatic efforts, including
instrumental pieces from "Rienzi" and Wagner's first mature
drama, "The Flying Dutchman." We'll also hear Placido Domingo
solo in the final moments of the first act of "The Valkyrie."
Daniel Barenboim conducts the Berlin State Orchestra. (Teldec

Should Wagner's music be discredited because of his anti-
semitism and German patriotism? William Berger takes on that
controversial question. 4:25

HOUR = 1 SEGMENT = C2
Music that has been used both as a symbol of the Third Reich and
as a hope for a future without violence and suffering: Klaus
