Nettl's (NET-tel) students called him at the University of
Illinois. The one-time explorer of musical rituals in India has
turned his eyes to Western classical music as an advisory editor
to the ten-volume Garland Encyclopedia of World Music, which
has just been published (Garland Publishing, Inc.). He talks
with Korva about some of the rituals and practices associated
with Western classical music, behavior that might seem normal to
fans of the form, but would certainly seem unusual to a person
