STATIONS: All stations provide non-commercial, public
broadcasting services and have a strong regional presence. WILL-
TV is the PBS station serving east central Illinois, a market of
330,000 households. WILL-AM, a 5,000 watt NPR station, serves
much of Illinois and western Indiana with a news and information
format. WILL-FM, a 105,000 watt station, serves east central
Illinois with predominantly classical music programming. AM has
been on the air since 1922, FM since 1941, and TV since 1955.
Stations are housed in a new public telecommunications center,
Campbell Hall, and are licensed to the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign.
LOCATION: The University of Illinois is located in Urbana-
Champaign, 135 miles south of Chicago, 180 miles northeast of
St. Louis, 120 miles west of Indianapolis. The University
setting (37,000 students) provides a rich cultural environment,
many sports and entertainment events, and a variety of
recreational facilities. Local schools, libraries, and shopping
areas are excellent.
POSITION: Regular full-time academic-professional appointment.
Employee is a member of the Development Department of the
Division of Broadcasting of the University of Illinois. Reports
directly to the Director of Development and works closely with
other Development Department units, including marketing,
membership, major gifts, and corporate support. Also works with
television production staff and with Internet operations staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Has primary responsibility for management of
the visual image of the WILL stations through print materials
and other visual mediums. Supervises and evaluates work of art
unit staff in print, broadcast, set, and web design. Provides
art unit leadership; manages unit workload. Creates visual
materials. Monitors unit computer system.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Baccalaureate degree in graphic design
or related field required, graduate degree preferable. Minimum
three years professional experience in graphic design or related
field required; five years preferable. Design talent and
leadership ability essential. Must have strong organizational
skills as well as project management and administration
experience. Minimum one year supervisory experience; proven
ability to work well in client relationship. Must be proficient
in use of Macintosh, including use of PageMaker, Freehand, and
PhotoShop. First-hand knowledge of printing industry,
understanding of basic principles of marketing necessary. Hands-
on experience with broadcast, set, and web design desirable but
not required. Understanding of and commitment to the goals of
public broadcasting, and compatibility with a university
environment are also criteria. Candidates will be asked to
present portfolios of their work to demonstrate expertise in the
field of visual communication.
