Look in your handy-dandy Yellow Pages under "Automobile Parts and
Supplies - Used and Rebuilt".
The number of "junkyards" (I think they call themselves "auto recyclers"
now) in C-U is rather limited. I am aware of three. They are:
Mack's - at the end of E. Kerr Avenue in Urbana. 367-6219.
Bill Smith's - on "Countryview Road", which is kinda out in the country
beyond Urbana, a left turn off Cunningham/Route 45, a little ways past
Farm and Fleet. 367-5090.
Twin City - out North Lincoln Avenue past I-74, more or less across the
street from UPS. 328-2100.
Twin City, to my knowledge, is the only one that is "self-service" - you
wander out into the field of junked autos, find the car you want, and
remove the part(s) you want with your own tools. I kinda like this
system because the parts tend to be a bit cheaper, but I'm amazed that
their liability insurer still permits this.
There are several other auto recyclers listed in the phone book, but
they're not in C-U.
It's best to call ahead and see if they have the kind of car/part you
need.
One neat thing is that some of them, at least - Bill Smith being the
example I know about here in town - are linked by computer to other "auto
recyclers" nationwide. So if they don't have the part you need, they can
hook you up with someone who does and who will ship it to you.
The downside of this is that it might be the wrong part or otherwise
somehow unsatisfactory when it arrives. But that's the downside of all mail
order. When I tried this I needed an outside mount mirror for my truck to
replace one that had rusted out. Bill Smith found me an auto recycler in
Indianapolis who had one. But when I queried him about its condition, he
was honest enough to admit that it was probably just about as rusty as the
one I was trying to replace. So we agreed not to do business. I'm sure
not all experiences with mail-order auto recyclers are as satisfactory as
that one. It's best to see the part before you buy it, if at all
possible.
Well, that pretty much exhausts the subject. :)

I've also heard good things about the Coltis junkyard in Westville
(near Danville), but have never been there.
