Well, yes.
But a main course (we're not talking vegetarian here,
of course) was typically
$17, an appetizer what, $8?, a dessert $5, that adds up
to $30 right there. Then add a pre-dinner drink,
a during dinner drink, an after dinner drink, and
as our late Sen. Dirksen said, a billion here,
a billion there, pretty soon it adds up to real money!
And worth every penny.

I don't think that it is pretense. I think it is the real thing.

So is this three dishes or one? Tim makes it sound like it's all one
dish, the "eggplant goat cheese black bean torta", Best Dish In Town.
Mike, on the other hand, makes it sound like it's three separate dishes.

So the torta is a good quantity of food? Other posts have sounded like
you leave Radio Maria feeling still hungry. How much exactly is this
torta, if I may ask?

I've had some truly excellent meals there (and a couple of real disasters,
as well), but the atmosphere of magniloquence is so off-putting I just want
to womit. I don't go there anymore.

Torta update:
I just this evening had one of the tortas, and although it was tasty, it
was decidedly sub-par. Short and smished, very little beans, and almost
no goat cheese at all. Alas! I mentioned to the waitress that the tortas
were sub-par tonite, but perhaps I'll give RM a call tomorrow. I have a
feeling they have a new torta maker.
If you mean "how much (money) exactly", then I can tell you that two tortas
with tax turns out to be $24.84, or about 11 or 12 dollars each, before tax.
Which is definitely less than most other things on the menu.
If you mean "how much (food) exactly", then here's a comparison: I generally
order a small sandwich /and/ a pizza when I go to Schlotsky's, so I'm a
pretty big eater. And I find it filling. The rack of lamb at RM, on the
other hand, is very expensive and not filling at all.

Just like it says here is what it says on the menu.

The torta was filling for me.
And John you are starting to sound like Doug.

A Free Thinker In A World Full Of Droids
Ahh, a pity. It can be that way sometimes, it depends highly on the
server, I think. I am a very much dress-down don't put up with snotty bs
type of person, but the past few servers we have had when we went were
really great. When Tim and I got tortas the other night she remembered us
and our order, and was genuinely listening to us when we described the
sub-par-ness. She told us that different people assemble them, and that
she would talk with tonight's assembler about consistancy.
Last night, a friend in town from california wanted to go get a torta
there so I went *again*. I am happy to say that her torta was right up
there and wonderful. I asked our waitress that night (the newer very
tatooed one) about the Torta Situation, and what had happened to us last
night. She said they had run out, and a different person had made them
today, and that perhaps the bad torta maker was "mandy". Anyway, she was
helpful and it was all good. My only slight beef is that I asked for more
black beans instead of the green bean chow chow on my salmon, and while I
indeed did not get chow chow, I didn't get more black beans. In the past
they have been very nice with substituting sides (except for the garlic
mashed potatoes, which they must make about one dish of for the whole
evening, seeing how much a fellow diner got once with his chicken).
I think the meat dishes are decidedly stinger than the vegitarian/pasta
dishes.
I am decidedly not "hip" (I have no barbells in my nose,
tatoos, and I don't dress half naked), but every time I"ve talked to the
people there they have been quite helpful and not annoying.
So maybe it has gotten better. I urge you to try it again, especially if
you get the non-sub-par tortas. I definitely agree with tim that it is the
best dish in town, even though I think the eggplant is undercooked.
So that's my .02. On the other hand, my friend and I last night also saw
a significant number of literally 3/4 naked women twigs with very joe
six-pack guys, and the women looked grumpy and did not talk. THey did
not enhance my dining experience, and it was pretty tacky.
OK, I'll give it another shot. I like the idea of having more good places
to eat. Maybe it's changed. Or maybe I'm just hypersensitive. In either
case, another try won't hurt anything, and I'd be delighted to be pleasantly
surprised!
