in rural areas were decided by the girl. We know from our interviews in the field that love marriages among adolescents are a growing trend, and more recent research confirms that more than 25% of marriages are based on the girl's decision.

Parents attribute the growing popularity of love marriage to increased literacy and access to mass media, such as Hindi soap operas. Mobile phones are also said to play a large role by enabling adolescents to talk to their peers without their parents' knowledge.

I completely fell in love with the village and wildlife in Bardia National Park. Perhaps I loved it so much because I never imagined that Nepal had such lush jungles. Or maybe it was hugging a baby elephant in the village!

Kopan Monastery was an oasis of calm between my adventures in Nepal. I loved waking up every day to Buddhist meditation and not having to worry about anything other than the Dharma. My week was full of pleasant strolls through the garden with a good book, thoughtful debates, discussions and picturesque views of Kathmandu Valley. The monks here are warm and welcoming to outsiders but the best part is they run regular introductory courses for just a few dollars per day.

The dish, originating in Nepal and Tibet, is a beloved staple for Nepalis both at home and abroad. It serves as a popular option for lunch, dinner and comfort food. The most sought-after momos, due to their taste, are made with buffalo meat, leading to a high demand for this meat in urban areas of Nepal. However, this high demand could pose a threat to the endangered wild water buffaloes (Bubalus arnee) in the eastern plains of Nepal.

Most patients interviewed reported having been counseled on self-care practices in order to prevent disability. Interviewees at the specialized leprosy institutions benefited from the self-care programs. After attending these programs, certain patients purposefully used gloves to protect hands and shoes while walking.

I loved getting to know my travel mates. Flavia is a professional photographer, and I spent an afternoon exploring Bandipur with her, watching as she took photos and learning how I might take my photography to the next level. In a town so picturesque, there were plenty of subjects, but I especially loved the small sewing nooks set into sides of buildings, where villagers sat outside to sew goods for sale.

Another evening, Steph, Mary and I took a night rickshaw tour of Kathmandu. We lit candles at the Kaal Bhairav temple in Durbar Square and posed by the Basantapur Temple under a full moon. Durbar Square is lovely any time of day, but is especially evocative in the dark, accompanied by new friends.

We found that budget guest houses in Nepal have pretty reasonable toilet facilities. Aside from the cheapest of the cheap guest houses, western sit down toilets were very common, especially in any place marketed towards a western backpacker audience. You could pay a little more for a private ensuite bathroom, or opt for a shared bathroom if your budget was a bit tighter. We stayed in a lovely guest house in Pokhara, for 3 each per night, which had a very clean ensuite toilet and shower with hot water. The sit down toilet was accompanied by a bum-gun, which seems quite typical for urban dwellings in Nepal. This price also seemed pretty typical, with many backpackers actually commenting that it was a little expensive. Nepal is a very cheap country to travel in!
Note: We were there just prior to to the devastating 2015 earthquake, but we know plenty of people who have visited post-earthquake and they assure us Nepal is still awesome.

A few hours later, my bladder painfully full, the bus pulled over for a break. But there were no toilets in sight this time. I felt fairly let down. One thing I had to learn to love about Nepal was the comfortable rest stops every few hours, with access to drinks, snacks, and squat toilets, and this more basic, local bus was not delivering.

We nepalese always over react and this is fact.we are 19th poorest country in the world but we all really dont care of that. We put comments on article where tourist express his thoughts though he mention word rape.you guys hangaround near corner store and tea stall do pass comments on girls every freaking day.thats cool rights.if you can stop screening girls.anyway nothing will changed.

Dila.
You have righrs to express yooyr thought.every day nepalese are raped by politicians.more over no one have rights to laugh on your face because of your color.that is lack of mannerisms which we need to learn.they called indian as dhoti and whole family enjoy bollywood movie.they hate if someone said are indian but if someone said you look like south American they share with friends.so dila chill.let them overreact .let them do what they are good about.by i am nepali and am overreacting as well. Lol

As a Blackman living in south india to be precise chittoor. I'm stared at as though I'm causing some harm, but even that i can bare .but the laughing and some even running away from me , hurts!
Only if they had known the peace and love i have towards them, they would would have treated me as one of them.
May god strengthen all my brothers going through such conditions throughout Asia.
It's ridiculous!

I am a nepali women and I am in a relationship with an African man. He is very kind to me and takes care of me. I know in asian countries its hard to live without people staring at you out of curiosity but its because they have never seen anyone like that in their home country. They stare at all the foreigners specially in rural areas where foreigners are barely even seen there. I am sorry that you felt that way but you are welcome in Nepal. And all those people hating on him and blaming him for having evil thoughts should put them in his place and think what they would have done where they are living in a foreign land where everyone just gives you unfriendly looks.

Hi dila..
Just read ur post today. But m really soory for your bad experiences.Yeah..m nepali but i even dont like some ways nepali reacts..especially gazing at unusal things with curiousity n finally making laugh on it..i understand how u felt that time..but we r loveable too..We love tousrist and always welcome with great heart..hope you will like Nepal more next time..gudluck

There are numerous trekking supply companies in Kathmandu offering counterfeit and cheap gear at very low prices. Since we had been traveling from other countries with the bare minimum of gear, we had to buy and rent most of what we would use for the trek. Nepal Social provided us with sleeping bags, but we still had to purchase down coats, hats, gloves, sleeping bag liners, flashlights, and wind and rain proof pants.

Souvenir shops can literally be found every fifteen feet in the Thamel area of Kathmandu. In fact, this area of the city is just one giant souvenir/trekking gear/Nepali clothing shop. Everything needs to be bargained for, which we now really love doing. If you are shopping for Tibetan music, a prayer wheel, or a colorful souvenir, Kathmandu is the place to be!

The 13 bodies were carried to the banks of the Bheri River and placed on pyres made of stacked wood. Priests chanted Hindu prayers while family members cried as they covered the bodies of loved ones with flowers before setting them on fire in a cremation ceremony.

Since 2009, your love has been present in Nepal, meaning we are uniquely positioned to reach families in need and had prepositioned supplies in place. Mobilized teams are already seeking to support hard-to-reach communities.

Most recently, on May 24, two Dalit boys, Nawaraj Bishwakarama (BK) and Tika Ram Sunar, were found dead on the banks of the Bheri river in the Jajarkot district of Southern Nepal. Three other bodies of Ganesh Budha, Sandip BK and Lokendra Sunar were found later and another youngster, Govinda Shahi is still missing. An inter-caste love relationship was deemed to be the major reason for their tragic deaths.

Nawaraj, a 21-year-old from Jajarkot who loved playing sports and wanted to join the police force, was born into a Dalit family. He fell in love with Sushma Malla, an upper-caste, 17-year-old girl. Once her family learned about their relationship, Nawaraj and his family received frequent warnings to keep away from her, and on one occasion, he was reported to the police.
