A user has reported on the code issues page (http://code.google.com/p/
clustrdesktop/issues/detail?id=3) that Norton Internet Security 2010
on Windows automatically quarantines Clustr Desktop when it starts.

This is unexpected behaviour on the part of the Norton software, as I
am obeying all of the Adobe Air security policies and no other
security software has tried to block the application either.

I have notified Symantec of this issue and hope to have it resolved
shortly.

In the mean time, please enjoy using Clustr Desktop with my personal
assurance that your privacy and security is taken very seriously, and
always protected.

I have received a response from Symantec on this issue. Please see the
message below for their information on this matter.

--------------

Hello Chris,

Thank you for contacting Norton Support.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused due to this. I will
definitely help you on this matter.
Sometimes when Norton does not get the necessary updates regarding any
file it may consider that file vulnerable. However, if such files are
trusted by the User, it can be added to the Scan Exclusion list so
that Norton do not scan or block such files.

For detailed steps, I am providing you with a document from the
Symantec Online Knowledge Base pertinent to this error. I request you
to suggest your customers to follow the below instructions on their
computer.

To view the document, please click on the link or copy and paste the
below link on the address bar of the Internet Explorer (or any web
browser):

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=eab9bf9a-4f03-4d85-aa76-4d70425b8332&seg=hho&ct=us&lg=en&docurl=20090903182949EN

Once the steps in the above link are performed, please follow the
below steps to exclude the Adobe Air desktop application executable
file which is getting quarantined:

Open the Norton program interface.
Please click on Settings in the Computer pane.
Scroll down and search for Exclusions.
Under Exclusions, please click on configure on the right side of Scan
Exclusions.
Please click on Add under Scan Exclusions.
Browse for the Adobe Air desktop application executable file and then
click Ok.
Please click on Apply and then Ok.
Please click on Add under Auto-Protect Exclusions.
Browse for the Adobe Air desktop application executable file and then
click Ok.
Please click on Apply and then Ok.
If they get any issue while following these steps, please reply to
this e-mail with the exact text of the error message or the details of
what happens after performing the steps mentioned above. This will
help us better understand the issue you are encountering.
While replying to this email, please do not change the "subject
line".
Thanks,

Sushant Kumar Hansda

That's a pretty lame answer from Symantec - they're telling us how to
work around the issue of Sonar quarantining the file a 2nd time after
it's been excluded. It should not quarantine the file in the first
place!

FWIW, Sonar also blocks one of the cygwin executables. If you can't
trust Sonar with perfectly safe executables, what good is it? This is
clearly a false positive.

To me, this is a bug in Sonar that adversely impacts ClustrDesktop
users. Unfortunately, Norton Internet Security is one of the top AV
products out there so we should try to get them to fix their bug.

I agree completely - I will attempt to make contact again, but I am
doubtful that they will do something about it quickly.
