Hi ClusterHAT Support,

Love the project! However, I seem to be having issues with my unit.

Upon installing the new Cluster HAT on a working Raspberry Pi 4 (with 4x Pi Zeros attached), the RED Power LED on the HAT does come on (and so does the blue LED), but the Blue LED is not turning off again or dimming as it should based on the troubleshooting guide. Only one of the 4 PiZeros seems to be receiving power; P3 does have a solid Yellow light when powered on, but none of the other 3 slots do.

The Pi4 (host) is also not recognizing the HAT after connecting to the Pi's GPIO pins through the OS either. Below is the error received on the host when running any of the clusterctl commands.

ERROR: No ClusterHAT/CTRL devices found

Please note that I have tried other pi HATs on this Pi4 to rule out an issue with the host/controller's GPIO pins, but all others are working fine. I have even tried this on another Pi3 that I had lying around as well with no luck. Everything on the forums are pointing to a hardware issue/faulty Cluster HAT.

All 5 nodes (Pi4 Controller + 4x Pi Zeros) all have the latest custom images installed on the SD card per the user guide. I have also confirmed all 4 Pi Zeros power on when connected to a normal power supply.

Summary of setup:
  • Controller - Pi 4 8GB
  • P1 - Pi Zero 2 W
  • P2 - Pi Zero 2 W
  • P3 - Pi Zero W
  • P4 - Pi Zero W
I purchased this unit via PiShop.us and after reaching out with the above info, their support team have suggested to make a post here on the forum and would replace the unit if it does deem to be a hardware issue.

Please let me know if you require any additional information or pictures.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi,
There seems to be a couple of things wrong - If you're running the ClusterCTRL software on the controller and the blue LED doesn't go out and you get "no devices found" it means it hasn't been setup from the EEPROM which normally means it needs to be pushed onto the Pi GPIO pins further but if P3 is powering on by itself then that points to a problem with the pull down resistor array so yes, I'm sorry but it does look like a faulty Cluster HAT has been send out.

I'd be grateful if you could send me a quick message with the Cluster HAT serial number to sup...@8086.net.uk so I can make a note of it.

Chris.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the quick response. I will message you the serial number on the device.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi Chris,

Your note about EEPROM got me thinking... I currently have the Pi4 boot loader set to allow USB boot (allowing the OS to be installed on a M.2 SSD attached via USB rather than the SD Card). Could this be causing any issues in initializing the ClusterHAT via EEPROM?

It was flashed using the Raspberry Pi Imager OOTB bootloader config for USB Boot.

Thanks,
Justin

Booting via USB shouldn't cause any problems, the Pi should read the EEPROM anyway (unless it's a compute module or disabled in the config.txt).

Chris.
