Hello,

I have seen that the new v2.5 ClusterHAT has dedicated pads to connect a 5V fan, and the new PiHut case (which sadly doesn't come for Pi 3 atm) even provides a mount for a 40mm fan.
As my v2.4 model doesn't have this yet, but has the 5V and GND pads near the power-in, I was wondering how connecting a fan to these pads would work and what differs these from the extra ones on v2.5.
I`ve allready seen some people in this forum connect a fan to the GND/5V pads, but I myself am not sure on how to achieve this (without risking to damage anything).

Thanks in advance.

Similar questions for the Triple

I have the case and fan from you/Chris/Tindie

But it misses a connector on the Triple

Which kind of connector should I solder?

Thanks 🙏🏻

It is easy to power a fan on the ClusterHat v 2.4, just solder 2 pins in the 2 holes just passed the printed v2.4 and connect the fan to them, negative nearest to the Power in socket. As for mounting the Fan as I use the case I mounted it on the outside of the top plate after cutting a hole to suit and 4 attachment holes

The SMD pads on the underside of the ClusterHAT v2.4 and the holes at the front (for 3.5 mm pitch screw terminal like https://thepihut.com/products/screw-terminal-3-5mm-pitch2-pin / https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/screw-terminals-3-5mm-pitch-pack-of-10 / etc.) can be used for an "always on" FAN by either soldering directly or soldering the screw terminal, etc. For v2.5 I added a small MOSFET so you can control the fan using GPIO BCM18.

I'm sorry about that, the Triple should have the fan header soldered - it was designed for a regular 2 pin 2.54 mm (0.1") header.

Hi Chris,

with the cluster hat v2.5 from pihut (https://thepihut.com/products/cluster-hat-v2-0) *link says 2.0 but its 2.5. Does this need a separate pins to be soldered on? or can i just fit a 5v pi fan on directly on to the clusterhat?

cheers
Jimmy

Yes, there are holes near the GPIO header on Cluster HAT v2.5 to solder a 0.1" pitch 2-pin header (the holes are offset so a header should stay in place if you can't solder it might not be reliable).

Hi Chris

Thanks so much for the info and fast response. I wonder if you have a link instructions or pictures of a soldered clusterhat for a fan attached? My soldering skills are on level with a two year old, so just want to make sure I do it right and would like to see how it should look like in end result.

Thanks again for clusterhat. It's a great module for pi!

Cheers
Jimmy

I haven't got any instructions as at the moment, here's a could of quick
picture of the connector placed in the holes and a another (upside down)
through the side of one of their cases.

If you need any more details on anything let me know and I'll sort
something out.

Glad you like it :).

I'm not sure what's going on with Google Groups but trying to post them again it just sits there doing nothing so I've uploaded them to http://d4a.net/img/ClusterHAT/ClusterHAT-v2_5-fan-header.jpg and http://d4a.net/img/ClusterHAT/ClusterHAT-v2_5-fan-header-thepihut-case.jpg
