I am writing a long paper with a lot of references. I like how endnote is loading the references from that document in a separate group but I cannot find the feature to display the reference number from the document in Endnote. In other words, I would like to be able to spot more easily which one is the reference number [XX] in my document.

I would like to see in EndNote the number that is in the word document for a given reference. In other words being able to sort the reference in Endnote in function of their order of appearance in the word document.

I am using X7 with MS Word 2013. Normally when I start a new document and insert some citations, EndNote inserts a numbered superscript character and formats it as a blue, underlined, hyperlink that I can click to jump to the bibliography.

We need to get the libraries identical again. I tried copying one of the references on her mac, and syncing again. The reference was duly duplicated on both laptops - but the record number was different on the two computers.

Usually you would make sure to update citations and bibliography then move the document to the other machine. Then open the synced library and first update citations and bibliography in the document. This will match the citations, record numbers to the local library.

If you unformat the citations and then move, yes the citations will miss-match. Go back to the original machine, update citations, move the document and update once again. If that is no longer pssible, you will have to match the citations.
You will have to go through them all, save and backup the document. Always have back-ups of your library and Word document as you work.

Actually, these days I rely on the Accession numbers (in the temporary citations in preferences) that come from pubmed for the articles. It seems to find other reference types even if that field is empty, or you can sort on accession number and copy from record number to that field. You can select and show any record where the field is empty (sort library on the accession field). If my colleagues also do this, we have no problem co-authoring papers!

You mentioned earlier that when using the label field, you had to insert characters before and/or after the record number to ensure the citation linked to the correct reference in your library. Is this no longer needed when using Accession Number?

Syncing folders thru cloud drive service absolutely requires that you NEVER sync while a library is open on any one of the machines. So if you leave it open and forget, and it syncs, and database files are open, that will absolutely corrupt the library. I think that is just too dangerous.

Thanks very much for walking me through this. I did notice a few hangups using the cloud drive strategy, as you mentioned. I ended up going with your Copy record number to accession number strategy, and it worked like a charm.

"Numerical reference citations are numbered consecutively from the beginning of a paper. When, occasionally, a reference is repeated in the text, the original number is used, a new number is not given."

Since there is a space before the Bibliography Number, the Endnote bug prevents combining adjacent reference numbers in the in-text citations. If I remove the space in the citation template, it works fine, as others have shown.

In the Citation template, instead of using the spacebar to enter a space, hold down the ALT key and type 255 on the keypad, This will enter ASCII character 255, which shows on the screen and prints as a space (but it is not a space, which ASCII 32).

The record number in EndNote desktop has always been an internal identifier assigned by EndNote and not changable by the user. Neither EndNote online nor EndNote iPad utilize record numbers as identifiers. For syncing purposes, records are assigned a different internal ID to identifiy when records are added, deleted or changed.

In order to circumvent this problem I have change in the pref the temporary citations from record number to accession number in both libraries. The problem is to fill up this field manually with a unique identifier. But then if you unformat the record will no longer appear but the accession number. It will help avoiding mixing up with references.

I assume you mean that the citation is not being converted from the temporary to the formatted citation? You need to either mannually update it from endnote ribbon (update citations and bibliography) or turn on the instant formating (same ribbon) and be sure the correct output style is chosen there.

I have a problem with the reference function in Word. I am using endnote X7 in Word 365 ProPlus. I have been writing and citing in the same document for a few weeks now, but suddenly the citing function doesnt work as intended. Whenever I cite a reference it gives me this: author, year #number. For example: Steinberg, 2008 #53760

I have download trial version for endnote X8 and I am using ms word 2013. After install it, the tool of endnote did not appear in Ms Word, then I tried many ways suggested on the internet. Finally, it worked.

If you add, delete, or move a cross-referenced footnote or endnote, you must update the cross-reference number. Hold down CONTROL , click the cross-reference number, and then click Update Field on the shortcut menu. Word updates cross-references automatically when you print.

You can change the size or font of the note reference mark, footnote, or endnote exactly as you would any other text. Select the note reference mark, footnote, or endnote, and then on the Home tab, under Font, apply the formatting changes that you want.

There is an menu-item in the font menu to edit document endnote-options, where you can set a paragraph-style for your endnotes. I guess, if nothing selected, your default paragraph get italic and so is the endnote. Id suggest just to use an own paragraph style for your endnote.

In the tab for Drop Caps and Nested Styles, add the character style that will be applied just to the initial number(s), also use other setting available in their respective drop down menus. Just as easy.

An endnote consists of two linked parts: the endnote reference number that appears in source text, and the endnote text that appears in a new frame at the end of the document. There is an adornment at the bottom left corner of the endnote frame.

You can create endnotes or import them from Word or documents. Endnotes are automatically numbered as they are added to a document. You can control the numbering style, appearance, and layout of endnotes. Also, the numbering auto-adjusts based on the rearrangements of the endnotes in the text. You can add endnotes in a table as well.

Choose a paragraph style that formats the endnote title. The menu displays the paragraph styles available in the Paragraph Styles panel. By default, the [Basic Paragraph] style is used. The [Basic Paragraph] style may not have the same appearance as the default font settings for the document.

If you have multiple stories or text frame in a document with continued page numbering, select Continuous to start the endnote numbering in each story to continue where the last story ends. Select Restart Every Story to start each story in a document with the same Start At number.

This option determines the appearance of the endnote reference number, which is superscript by default. If you prefer to format the number using a character style (such as a character style that includes OpenType superscript settings), choose Apply Normal, and specify the character style.

Choose a character style to format the endnote reference number. For example, instead of using superscript, select a character style at a normal position with an elevated baseline. The menu displays the character styles available in the Character Styles panel.

Choose a paragraph style that formats the endnote text for all endnotes in the document. The menu displays the paragraph styles available in the Paragraph Styles panel. By default, the [Basic Paragraph] style is used. The [Basic Paragraph] style may not have the same appearance as the default font settings for the document.

The separator determines the white space that appears between the endnote number and the start of the endnote text. To change the separator, first select or delete the existing separator, and then choose a new separator. You can include multiple characters. To insert white-space characters, use the appropriate metacharacter, such as ^m for em space.

Select this option to determine how endnotes are maintained for a given document. Select Story to create a different endnote frame for each story. Select Document to have one endnote frame for entire document. This option can also be used to change the scope.

Select this option to determine how a new endnote frame is created when an endnote is inserted. Select On A New Page to create the endnote frame on a new page for the defined scope. Select Load The Place Cursor to load the place cursor on inserting the first endnote for the defined scope. The place gun can be placed anywhere in the document and all the endnotes within that scope are added to this frame only.

Prefixes appear before the number, such as [1.Type a character, or characters, or select an option for Prefix. To select special characters, click the icon next to the Prefix control to display a menu.

Suffixes appear after the number, such as 1].Type a character, or characters, or select an option for Suffix. To select special
characters, click the icon next to the Suffix control to display a menu.

To delete an endnote, select the endnote reference number that appears in the text, and then press Backspace or Delete. If you delete only the endnote text, the endnote reference number and endnote structure remain.
