John-Anthony worked at Apple's Genius Bar for years and has seen many issues related to pictures not appearing on a customer's iPhone. Luckily, he's here to help and will get your photos back into Messages so you don't have to miss out on sharing memories.
In addition to iMessage, the iPhone supports MMS, which is a simplified way to send a text message via a cellular network. If you have MMS disabled on your iPhone, you won't be able to send or receive multimedia messages like photos or videos with Android users or when iMessage is unavailable.
I have this same exact problem. It will give me the drop down menu, I click delete, it will accept that I clicked delete but then the pictures wont delete. I just messed with it and for some reason it is only two pictures in the entire chat that it wont delete, which ironically are the ONLY two pictures I need to delete. They have been removed/deleted from the actual Imessage thread but not from the Details Window.
there is no "review large attachments" option under general>iPhone storage>messages. I have done EVERYTHING to delete these pictures and nothing is working. they don't exist in Messages, they don't exist under settings>general>iPhone storage>messages>photos, they don't exist on any of my other devices. yet there they sit, undeletable on my iPhone (iOS 13.3). I keep trying to delete them, but they never actually go away.
I have also tried everything--iphone 6 Plus here---and it's strange: I took different pictures on different occasions/dates/subject matter the same way: using the 10 second delay. I deleted them from the imessages to save space, but they show up in the details under "i"under contact--yet cannot be deleted in any way, form or fashion as per these forums/Apple way. Thing is, only *certain* pictures will not delete, though all were taken the same manner. Using the settings/storage/review large attachments/deleting will not work, either. Invasion of privacy. I find it very odd that only certain ones are not deleted, as if someone has blocked deleting them. I hope this is resolved.
I had this issue for months and finally fixed it. Back up your phone and erase it, when you restore it make sure to stay on wifi and plugged in. Took forever to load all my messages because I have threads that are years old, but I can download all images now.
Odd update. I downloaded Google Messages, set it as default, and got a picture text from her. Went back to stock messages app, set it as default, picture was there too! She sent another picture, neither app got it.
I an having the same issue - when going into voicemail. It started in August or September 2023. Many blank messages, mixed in with real messages on my iphone 13. Also, voice mail button does not indicate that I have messages. I check periodically, and end up picking up my messages late! Rebooting does not fix this. I find iphones are degrading in quality over time.
For any messages with pictures in my phone that are older than about 1 day, my iPhone seems to "un-download" the picture when I'm viewing the message in Messages and gives me an option to Tap To Download for an image that I already downloaded yesterday. After another day passes it'll once again be "un-downloaded" (sorry I don't have a better term for it).
In an ideal world you'd never need to know why pictures aren't appearing in your iPhone text messages, nor how to fix the problem. By and large, photos sent your way will land in your Messages app without a hitch. But every now and then you may hit a problem, more so if you've just updated your iPhone, which is when such issues tend to arise.
Images attached to a text message will be sent via MMS (the Multimedia Messaging Service) if iMessage is not available. MMS is enabled by default but there is a slim chance you may have deactivated it by mistake when previously altering the settings of your iPhone. If a picture has been sent to you and both iMessage and your MMS weren't working or activated, you won't see the image. It's worth a check.
If the problem you are having is with one contact only, delete the contact and all the messages you have from that person on your phone. Ask the contact to do the same. Once that is done, test the picture message before adding them back to your contacts.
