Just a quick question to the person(s) who put the waterproof outlet covers on at the field.

Where are the GASKETS for the covers??

Today ALL of the outlets at the South end had a quantity of water in them. As they are live it might be reasonable to expect that the covers are actually waterproof!! The club is quite possibly at risk of being sued if anyone gets electocuted by this lack of care.

It might also be worth knocking out one of the cable exit blanks on the bottom so that any water that does get in can escape and not build up to, eventually, short out the sockets.

I wanted to let you guys know that we are working on this question. Don King is working on it and I went to Lowes tonight after looking at the installation at the field Tuesday. The clear plastic covers packaged new in the store are called waterproof covers. In the factory sealed package for the covers, there are a set of die cut gaskets meant to fit a variety of recepts and/or GFI installations to the square handy box. There are no gaskets supplied to seal the clear plastic cover to the cover mount. The clear cover will snap shut to the cover base and that seal between the two is a tongue and groove set up that is not totally water tight but if the cover is snapped shut at the bottom of the cover, there would have to be copious amounts of water directed at the cover for any water to penetrate inside the box to the receptacles.

If the last person that uses a receptacle box does not snap the cover shut, there is a potential for moisture to get behind the cover during a rain shower. I will say that I have personally had three outside receptacles at my home for 15 years with considerable less protection from rain and have never had a issue with shorting from water intrusion. These covers are certified for outdoor use and are defined as waterproof on the factory package.

If I read one concern correctly, there was concern about water getting into the recept box and traveling down through the plastic conduit and causing an issue with the wiring. If I understood that concern correctly, know that the plastic conduit at each post is there primarily to protect the underground rated wiring that we ran to each power post from string trimmers and mowers. The plastic conduit only runs about 20" into the ground and into a 90 degree elbow, so in the rare chance that water would enter the receptacle box and run down the conduit, it would simply drain into the dirt, because that is what the wire is in all the way back to the shed.

If there are any other concerns about the materials used, feel free to let me know.

John,

Each of the covers was clicked shut. Each of the covers had at least 1/2 inch of water in them.

If the boxes are as supplied then so be it. The ones I have, all have a gasket supplied for the lid. I can only go by what I have used and know.

Thanks

It seems no matter how hard I try NOT to learn new things in my retirement, it still happens!! Curses!!! Thanks, again, for your feedback, Dave. Don King removed all the knockouts from the recept boxes yesterday. If water gets into the boxes now, we will need boats to drain them!!!  The only caveat here is that we will need to watch for wasps building nests inside the covers.

Again, thanks for your feedback. Dave.
